Nine IAF, four Army personnel get Vir Chakra for role in Operation Sindoor
A total of 127 Gallantry Awards and 40 Distinguished Service awards were given to the Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) personnel on the eve of 79th Independence Day. The list of personnel awarded for Operation Sindoor included 13 from the armed forces -- nine from the IAF and four from the Army –who were conferred the Vir Chakra, the third-highest wartime gallantry award.
Two recipients were from the Ministry of Home Affairs: Sub Inspector Mohd Imteyaj and Constable Deepak Chingakham.
There was also a rare list of the seven top-level armed forces officers awarded the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal for their role in Operation Sindoor. This award is given for exceptional operational planning, coordination and execution. President conferred 4 Kirti Chakras which are peacetime equivalents of the Mahavir Chakras of the war time. The other Gallantry Awards includes 15 Vir Chakras; 16 Shaurya Chakras; 2 Bar to Sena Medals (Gallantry). When the award is conferred more than once it is termed as Bar to the award.
The list also includes 58 Sena Medals (Gallantry), 6 Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry) and 26 Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry). The 40 Distinguished Service awards include 7 SarvottamYudh Seva Medals, 9 Uttam Yudh Seva Medals and 24 Yudh Seva Medals. The President has also approved 290 Mention-in-Despatches, including 115 personnel of the Army, 5 of the Navy, 167 of the Air Force and 3 of the Border Roads Development Board (BRDB). The President's awards also include three Tatrakshak Medals (TM), Indian Coast Guard personnel in recognition of their acts of conspicuous gallantry. Two more TMs were given for exceptional devotion to duty and meritorious service.

He paid homage to Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru, Lala Lajpat Rai, Udham Singh, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Madan Lal Dhingra, and other martyrs who inspired generations with their courage and commitment. He also highlighted India's unwavering stand against terrorism, lauding the swift military responses in Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev, carried out after the Pahalgam attack. On Punjab, Kataria commended welfare schemes such as free healthcare, electricity benefits, educational investments, and sports promotion, stressing the importance of transparency and accountability in governance. A special feature of this year's celebration was the participation of 50 hearing- and speech-impaired individuals, who viewed the parade with real-time sign language interpretation, ensuring inclusivity in the festivities. On the occasion, Kataria honoured 34 Chandigarh Administration employees and civilians with commendation certificates for excellence in public service, arts and culture, social work, and sports. The Administrator's Police Medal was awarded to 24 Chandigarh Police personnel, while three officers received the President's Police Medal for their distinguished services. To mark the occasion, the Administrator declared Monday, August 18, as a holiday for all government, government-aided, and private schools in Chandigarh. The event was attended by Rajeev Verma, Chief Secretary of Chandigarh; Sagar Preet Hooda, Director General of Police; and other senior officials of the administration and police.

India, South Korea resolve to set new industrial ambition in high-tech sectors
Agency: PTI New Delhi, Aug 16 (PTI) India and South Korea on Saturday resolved to expand their strategic partnership by setting new 'industrial ambition" in the areas of semiconductor, defence, clean energy, and artificial intelligence. Ways to ramp up the overall bilateral cooperation figured prominently in talks between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his visiting South Korean counterpart, Cho Hyun. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Jaishankar and Hyun agreed to set new industrial ambitions, especially in high-tech sectors such as AI, semiconductors, clean energy, shipbuilding, and the defence industry. The ministers took stock of bilateral cooperation, including in the political, security, trade and economy, technological, and people-to-people domains, it said. In a social media post, Jaishankar described the talks as 'productive". 'Held productive discussions on advancing our bilateral cooperation in trade, manufacturing, maritime and people-to-people exchanges as well as new opportunities in AI, semiconductors, clean energy and defence," he said. Jaishankar said he and Hyun also exchanged perspectives on the Indo-Pacific region and contemporary global developments. 'Appreciated our deepening convergences and growing engagement as our Special Strategic Partnership completes 10 years," he added. In his opening remarks at the meeting, Jaishankar also thanked Seoul for its condemnation of the horrific April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. The external affairs minister also made a mention of Seoul's support to an Indian parliamentary delegation that visited South Korea in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. 'You have been barely a month in the job (as the foreign minister), the fact that you are here literally a day after your National Day, and our National Day, says a lot really about the value we attach to the relationship," Jaishankar said. The India-South Korea ties have been on an upswing in the last few years, especially in the areas of trade and defence. The MEA said Jaishankar and Hyun reaffirmed the strong and growing 'special strategic partnership" between the two countries. The partnership is rooted in shared democratic values, mutual trust, shared economic interests, and commitment to regional and global peace and stability, it said. 'The ministers also shared their assessment on regional and global issues of common interest," the MEA said in a statement. In line with PM's I-Day speech, Delhi Police chief sets goals on atmanirbharta, tech & healthy competition
New Delhi, Aug 16 (UNI) Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh has set goals for the force emphasizing on three important aspects including Atmanirbharta, Use of Technology and Healthy Competition, highlighting these points from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech delivered at the Red Fort on 79th Independence Day. He said that the force must implement the three important points swiftly and in a mission mode across the force. Singh also urged the force personnel, suggesting they must be more people friendly and have 'Sewa Bhav' to earn the trust of the public, enabling them to approach police without any hesitation in case of need. During his address to the force personnel on the occasion of Independence Day, the Delhi Police chief asked all the units to work on the aspect of 'Atmanirbharta' (self-reliance), and come up with a proposal within 15 days time. The aim is to make Delhi Police self-reliant on many fronts to stop dependence on others for things like commandos, bomb disposal squads, wireless sets and other things. Speaking on the use of technology, CP Delhi added that, although the force has always been making best use of technology, and is quite ahead on this front, however, still there is a need to go further. He stressed that whether it is a matter of surveillance, preventing cybercrime, the ability to fight terrorists, the use of technology is required in every field. Singh directed all the Delhi Police units dealing in technology related matters to form committees and groups and conduct necessary studies and come up with proposals in a months' time to enhance use of advanced technology in the force. Talking about another important aspect of the PM's speech, he asked the force to build a sense of healthy competition, , but at the same time, stressed to shun the feeling of jealousy. He asked to embrace the principle at individual, as well as at the organisational level. The police chief also congratulated the force's 18 officers & personnel who have been awarded Police Medals for 'Distinguished Service' and 'Meritorious Service' on the occasion of Independence Day.
