Florida State football practice notes: Energy high as Seminoles begin preseason camp
Football is back, officially. Florida State football held its first preseason practice of the season on Wednesday, July 30, as the Seminoles begin preparation for Alabama and the 2025 season. The Tallahassee Democrat took in about 15 minutes of practice and got a first look at Tommy Castellanos, the new-look offense and defense alongside the new coaching staff. While viewing was limited to a handful of drills, here is what we saw from day one of the Seminoles preseason camp. Quarterback notes: Tommy Castellanos begins his first season leading the FSU offense Castellanos led off every drill as QB1, as expected, and he linked up mostly with true freshman wide receiver Jayvan Boggs and returning redshirt-junior Jaylin Lucas in the drills during the viewing period. From what we saw, Castellanos was on time with most of his throws — he did have one or two misses with balls thrown at the knees of intended targets. He spent time coaching up true freshman Kevin Sperry between drills, and seemed to be vocal with his teammates. Given the limited viewing, there wasn't much to take away outside of the delivery of the football to the receivers running routes. Offensive notes Recievers and running backs only partook in a handful of individual drills during the open window, with a few names earning some praise from the coaching staff. Boggs popped up more than a handful of times in his drills, earning praise from both head coach Mike Norvell and offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn at times. He worked with both Castellanos and Brock Glenn during the viewing window, a notable observation given how the coaching staff and teammates have praised the true freshman. Micahi Danzy was made to re-run a drill after a mistimed route and attempting a one-handed catch, with Norvell heard in the background yelling "two-hands." Malzahn instructed him to run the route again and he made a nice grab, followed by another later in practice as he continues his transition to a new position. Lucas, who was used as a running back last season, lined up and worked with the wide receivers in practice. Duce Robinson, Elijah Moore and Lawayne McCoy all earned praise for their work in various drills. There wasn't much to note with the drills done by running backs and the offensive line. Defensive notes The biggest takeaway was the vocalness of Darrell Jackson and defensive line coach Terrance Knighton. Knighton was barking orders, at times profane, at players running through defensive line drills. Jackson led off every drill and, Knighton made everyone re-run drills from the top with even the slightest error. Once Jackson finished his work, he joined Knighton in coaching the line through their work. The linebackers were split into two groups, with everyone working on pass rushing and ball security drills. There wasn't much action, but Justin Cryer was very vocal within the group alongside both linebacker coach John Papauchis and assistant Ernie Sims. Defensive backs worked in coverage drills, and there wasn't much to note with what we saw. Steelers training camp heats up as players take the field in pads for first time this year
The pads went on, and the intensity was turned up at Steelers training camp on Wednesday. It was a hard-hitting practice in Latrobe as both sides of the ball had a chance to show their physicality and talk their trash. The chippiness was definitely noticeable during both individual and team drills. There were some clear winners on the day during the highlighted 7-shot and backs on backers drills. Joey Porter Jr. made multiple big plays. Payton Wilson was impressive during Backs on Backers. Offensively, Kenneth Gainwell had some spin moves that produced 'Whoas' from the crowd. A lot of the players told us how thrilled they were to be playing 'real football.' 'I felt like the first day was good, you know, it was getting accumulated, running around, hitting people, so I had a great time today. I feel like everybody in the secondary did too, said Joey Porter Jr. 'Everybody wanted to put pads on. I was kind of upset yesterday that we didn't get the spin. So today, everybody was really anticipating it, and we showed it on the field.' Only one training camp 'skirmish' broke out in practice. During the team run period, Joey Porter Jr. and Robert Woods kept going after the whistle blew. Porter eventually took Woods to the ground. Teammates jogged over, and things dissipated pretty quickly afterwards. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts. Follow Channel 11 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch WPXI NOW

Darvish sharp for 7 innings, Sheets homers and the Padres beat the Mets 5-0 for 3-game sweep
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Yu Darvish pitched seven impressive innings for his first win of the season, Gavin Sheets hit a two-run homer and the San Diego Padres beat the NL East-leading New York Mets 5-0 on Wednesday for a three-game sweep. Manny Machado added a two-run, bases-loaded single for the Padres, who won their fifth straight game as they continue to chase the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Slugger Juan Soto was out of the lineup for the Mets a day after fouling a ball off the top of his left foot. Darvish (1-3), who turns 39 on Aug. 16, held the Mets to two hits, struck out seven and walked none in his fifth start. After allowing Mark Vientos' single with one out in the first, Darvish retired the next 13 batters. He had been sidelined by right elbow inflammation from mid-March until making his season debut on July 7. Darvish got a nice ovation as he headed to the dugout after pitching a perfect seventh in what became the Padres' big league-high 15th shutout. It was Darvish's 111th big league win, which, combined with his 93 in Japan, allowed him to break out of a tie with Hiroki Kuroda and take sole possession of first place on the combined all-time list. Sheets' homer off Clay Holmes (9-6) came after Jose Iglesias reached on shortstop Francisco Lindor's throwing error with two outs in the third. Sheets then drove an 0-2 pitch an estimated 427 feet to right-center, his 15th. Holmes retired the first two batters in the second before allowing a single by Martin Maldonado, hitting Fernando Tatis Jr. on the top of the left hand with a pitch and walking Luis Arraez. Machado then singled to left for a 2-0 lead. Machado hit a three-run homer in a 7-1 win on Tuesday night. Holmes lasted only 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs — two earned — and eight hits. The Mets were swept in a series of three or more games at San Diego for the first time since 2008. Key moment Sheets' homer gave Darvish some breathing room. Key stat It was the 10th time in Darvish's 14-year career that he pitched seven-plus innings while allowing no runs and two or fewer hits. Up next Mets LHP David Peterson (7-4, 2.83 ERA) is scheduled to start Friday night in the opener of a three-game home series against San Francisco. The Padres haven't named a starter for Friday night's opener of a three-game home series against St. Louis. ___ AP MLB:
