
Family man assassin
NETFLIX continues to build on its impressive licensed anime library with Sakamoto Days, an action comedy revolving around a retired
legendary assassin turned small convenience store owner and family man.
Once a feared figure in the Japanese underworld, Taro Sakamoto (Tomokazu Sugita) in the present operates a family-owned convenience store in a quiet part of Tokyo. After getting married and becoming a father, Sakamoto is unrecognisable from his days as a bachelor assassin, having gained an estimated 70kg in excess weight.
Sakamoto Days kicks off when Shin Asakura (Nobunaga Shimazaki), a clairvoyant hitman reluctantly locates him, with the order to either successfully convince Sakamoto to return to the underworld or if failing to do so, to snuff out the portly ex-assassin's life.
Based on Yuto Suzuki's manga series, Sakamoto Days bears a lot of similarities with other fictional works, especially recent ones such as the films Nobody and John Wick. What sets the animation apart is the Japanese eccentricities common in manga and anime, along with the story's heavy emphasis on the family unit.
There is also the comedy that comes from juxtaposing a stoic, mostly quiet character such as Sakamoto with the other more colourful and expressive characters, such as Asakura. As his clairvoyance is always 'turned on', he is constantly reading the minds of others and it gives a window for the series to inject humour by having Sakamoto think of hyper-violent things to shut Asakura up.
The series' action and art style are also commendable, with the latter being more stylistic than adhering to more typical Japanese animation. For a better idea of what this means, think of how different Studio Ghibli films look compared to say, Dragon Ball.
Unfortunately, the show has a minor flaw: as the first season keeps introducing new characters with each episode, Sakamoto's relationship with his wife Aoi and their daughter Hana gets slightly sidelined in terms of screentime.
The few scenes they share together, such as the flashback of Aoi giving Sakamoto an ultimatum to stop killing by threatening to jump off a building to show him the value of life, are great, but few and far in between.
Given the first season's finale involves the dangerous antagonist Slur helping four serial killers escape to hunt down Sakamoto, Aoi and Hana may get pushed out of the frame further in exchange for more action scenes in the second season.

Free ad-supported streaming services, such as Paramount Global's PlutoTV, Roku Channel and Fox's Tubi, also have gained popularity, collectively capturing 5.7% of TV viewership, Nielsen reported. Broadcast accounted for 20% of TV viewership in May, while cable accounted for 24%, Nielsen said. The rise of streaming, which received a big boost during the COVID pandemic when people were forced to seek entertainment at home, reflects the broader transformation in media consumption, as viewers increasingly favor on-demand content over traditional TV schedules. Netflix set to launch third themed venue in Las Vegas

The "Netflix House" allows fans to immerse themselves in the worlds of their favorite shows and movies and will include themed gift shops featuring exclusive merchandise and restaurants. The streaming giant's latest initiative enables it to generate additional revenue and diversify its business model, increasing customer loyalty and strengthening Netflix's market position by innovating in the entertainment space. The first two Netflix Houses will open in Philadelphia at King of Prussia Mall and in Dallas at Galleria Dallas in late 2025. "This is fandom coming to life, where you can actually step inside the worlds you've been watching and loving for years," marketing chief Marian Lee said. The location in Philadelphia will debut experiences based on popular titles called "Wednesday: Eve of the Outcasts" and "ONE PIECE: Quest for the Devil Fruit." The Dallas venue will house immersive experiences titled "Stranger Things: Escape the Dark" and "Squid Game: Survive the Trials." Squid Game star Lee Byung-hun feels 'bittersweet' as hit series comes to an end

Photo: AFP Lee Byung-hun was one of the few Asian actors to break into Hollywood when opportunities were still rare. The South Korean star – who turns 55 on July 12 – has built an enviable career spanning Korean and Hollywood films. He first entered the Hollywood scene with G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra (2009) and returned for its sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013). He's also appeared in Red 2 (2013), Terminator Genisys (2015) and The Magnificent Seven (2016). Now, as he reprises his role as the mysterious Front Man in Netflix's Squid Game Season Three, Lee reflects on how much has changed for Asian actors – and for Korean content. 'Like you mentioned, I do have experience working on Hollywood blockbusters. But the Squid Game experience was truly special,' he tells StarLifestyle during a Zoom interview. 'It was amazing to tell our own story – created and executed entirely by a Korean team. That made it all the more meaningful.' Lee, who has worked in the industry for decades, admitted he had never felt the kind of global fan enthusiasm that Squid Game brought. 'Even with my long career, this is something I'm experiencing for the first time. It's awe-inspiring and pleasantly surprising in the best way,' he continues. Squid Game made history as the first non-English Netflix original to top the US charts. It also topped the Netflix chart in other countries. For the second season, the cast travalled to United States and Italy for red carpet premieres and met the international fans at these locations. Photo: AP Lee attributes the global success of Squid Game and other Korean content not just to strong storytelling, but also to the growth of global streaming platforms. 'In the past, many actors dreamed of being in a Hollywood production. But now, we know that if we focus on telling a great story where we are – and execute it well – it can have just as much, if not more, global impact," he says. 'That's the biggest shift I've seen in recent years," says Lee, before adding, "It hasn't changed how I approach acting, but it's changed how I view the industry.' Speaking at a recent press conference in Seoul, Lee also opened up about saying goodbye to the show. 'I feel bittersweet that it's coming to an end. Like I have (felt) with many of my past projects, there's satisfaction, but also a little sadness,' says Lee who starred in other hit K-dramas including Iris , Mr. Sunshine and Our Blues . 'What made this one ( Squid Game ) different was promoting Season Two in the United States and getting to meet fans face-to-face. Their support was incredible,' he adds. With Season Three just around the corner, Lee is excited about reaching even more fans worldwide. 'We'll be doing a lot of global promotions again, and I'm really looking forward to it,' he says.
