
Soon, use WhatsApp to access 50 Tamil Nadu government services
An AI-powered bi-lingual chatbot (English and Tamil) will ensure that the user is able to get what they are looking for without being rerouted to any external interface through links or other applications, officials said.
The Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency (TNeGA) is working to roll out the WhatsApp-based e-governance solution in next three months, sources said. Minister of Information Technology and Digital Services Palanivel Thiaga Rajan had made the announcement regarding the service in the Assembly in April.
'Chatbot uses Generative AI to interpret citizens' request'
'Any form that needs to be filled or document to be uploaded when applying for a service can be done on WhatsApp itself. In case they are applying for documents such as nativity or income certificates, they will be able to download them as PDF files.
Payments (the minimal fee charged for different types of services) can also be made through WhatsApp's native payment feature. We are also providing other digital payment options,' said Dr Alby John Vargheese, Chief Executive Officer, Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency.
The chatbot will support Tamil and English interactions and through the 'Flow' feature of WhatsApp Business Platform dynamically guide users through services. It plans on tapping into Generative AI to interpret citizens' requests and direct them to the appropriate service.

Edtech firm Physics Wallah will provide free foundational to advanced-level coaching for JEE and NEET to students of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and Simultala Awasiya Vidyalayas in Bihar. The initiative is part of a broader effort by the Bihar education department, which on Tuesday signed five Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with academic and philanthropic institutions to strengthen educational quality across the state. The support includes interactive digital classes, practice tests, AI-based doubt-solving tools, free access to the firm's app, and regular academic progress monitoring for students of classes 9 to 12. Four other organisations have also partnered with the state to cover initiatives ranging from competitive exam preparation and English language learning to life skills training, entrepreneurship development, and job-oriented skilling for college students. Bharat Innovation Global will support class 8 students across Bihar in preparing for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) examination. The two-year programme will be delivered through live and recorded classes, supplemented with digital content and practice tests in 'Hinglish', officials said, adding that emphasis will be placed on students from rural and underprivileged backgrounds. Freedom Edu will implement a 'Holistic English Language Learning Programme' across government schools with a focus on building reading fluency, comprehension, verbal communication, and confidence among students. To promote life skills and entrepreneurship, the Going to School Fund will introduce a weekly two-day curriculum for students in classes 7 to 12. The first day will focus on story-based activities, while the second will involve digital project work. For students in higher education, the SGBS Unnati Foundation will offer a job-oriented skill development programme under its UNXT initiative. Final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students in all government and aided colleges will be eligible for a 30-day classroom-based training, consisting of three hours of instruction per day. Students will also be given free access to an e-learning platform featuring more than 600 videos and quizzes. 'The programme aims to connect at least 70 per cent of participants with employment, self-employment, or further education opportunities,' officials said. Education Minister Sunil Kumar, who attended the event, highlighted the government's financial commitment: 'Over 20% of the state's budget is allocated to education. These partnerships will not only bring in innovation and technology but also open new doors of opportunity for students.' He said regular monitoring and outcome-based evaluation would be ensured so that the results of each MoU are visible at the ground level. Dr S Siddharth, the additional chief secretary in the education department, said, 'Bihar has the largest number of students in the country. Providing them with quality resources and competitive guidance is a priority. These partnerships will be a milestone in that direction.'

Russia imposes curbs on WhatsApp, Telegram calls
Russia announced curbs on calls on the WhatsApp and Telegram messenger apps on Wednesday, saying that this was necessary to fight criminality, state media reported. A founder shared that she went into early labour but still checked her work emails. (LinkedIn/Alli K) 'I was 37 weeks pregnant and disturbingly uncomfortable. Checked into the hospital for high blood pressure… It happened so quickly... They were giving me meds to induce labour. And I was… Clacking away at emails!!!!' New York City-based Alli K wrote on LinkedIn. She continued that she had a lot of work to do as there were still three weeks until her maternity leave. So, she sent out a message that read, 'Hi everyone, baby's coming sooner than expected. I will be online for a bit and keep you posted!' That is when she got a response from a Gen Z colleague that she 'brushed off' at the time, but the remark later made her take a hard look at herself. The new-age employee told her, 'Are you doing work while you're in labour? Stop it.' 'Boundaries aren't a weakness. They're wisdom and survival,' she wrote, adding what she later learnt from the Gen Z workforce. How did social media react? A woman who works as a vice president in a company shared, 'I can relate. I answered emails soon after my C-section in the recovery room.' Another remarked, 'I can't tell you how many Slack messages I've sent that say something like 'Getting on a plane for my vacation ', BUT DON'T WORRY, I'LL STILL RESPOND. OOO is OOO. I wish I could have learned this lesson earlier in my career!' A third posted, 'Wow, what a story. Great lesson though, some things are more important than work.' A fourth wrote, 'My son arrived 3 weeks earlier, emergency delivery at 3.00 AM. Showed up at the hospital with my purse and the computer. Twelve hours after the delivery, I sent 60+ emails to finish all pending items. Crazy! And didn't get any appreciation for working after a major surgery.'
