Kilmarnock pay the penalty as they suffer Premier Sports Cup shoot-out defeat to Kelty Hearts

Kilmarnock boss Stuart Kettlewell bemoaned his side's lack of cutting edge as they suffered a penalty shoot-out defeat to Kelty Hearts in their Premier Sports Cup clash.

The visitors created a slew of chances - and had multiple strong penalty shouts turned away - as the two sides played out a goalless draw in Fife.

Connor Masson's missed penalty for the hosts ensured it was advantage Killie in the shoot-out but Ryan Adamson's saves from Jamie Brandon and Marcus Dackers saw the home side prevail 4-3 on penalties and pick up the bonus point.

The draw does at least mean that Kilmarnock's hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stages are still in their own hands as they sit atop Group H heading into Saturday's final game at home to East Fife.
Kettlewell said: "We deserve everything we get at the end of it. We create enough chances to win and don't convert so ultimately full credit to Kelty Hearts.
"I believe we should be winning the game, and that's no disrespect to them whatsoever. We've had good enough chances and if you don't convert them, we've seen it round the country that nights like this can be really difficult."

He added: "In the first half we needed to be a bit more forceful. In the second half we did start to hurt them but we just didn't have that end product or final decision to kill off the opponent. Kelty deserved the point and also their penalty shoot-out win.
"You have to have enough quality to open up the opposition - and I think we did that plenty in the second half - but we never had that final action to convert. We were creating enough chances and we need to take ownership of that."
He made wholesale changes to his line-up with only keeper Max Stryjek and defenders Lewis Mayo and George Stanger retaining their place in the starting line-up from their win over Livingston last week.

There was a first start for Tom Lowery, while Corrie Ndaba made his first appearance of the campaign after recovering from injury.
They controlled much of the play in the early stages but created few clear cut chances. Ndaba's back post header from a corner-kick that was palmed wide by Adamson on 11 minutes was the best they offered in the opening exchanges.

At the other end, a George Stanger slip could have proved costly as Luke McCarvel raced through on goal, but Brandon bailed out his teammate with a fine block to prevent any danger.
Killie started to get on the front foot and were twice thwarted by Adamson in quick succession midway through the half when Bruce Anderson fizzed a strike from the edge of the box before Ndaba once again saw his header saved.
The second half started off in similar fashion with the Premiership hosts on top but unable to find a breakthrough. Anderson spurned a glorious chance in the early stages after being teed up by Scott Tiffoney.

Kelty, though, weren't just content to defend and they went close to a shock opener when Innes Murray's curling effort from the edge of the box went narrowly wide.
Tiffoney impressed down the left flank and was the source of most of Killie's positive play during the second 45 minutes. He drove to the line on 65 minutes before sending in a delivery that was fired inches over the bar by Brandon.
Lowery was next to have a pop as he drove through the Kelty defence but could only send his effort straight at Adamson while Kelty breathed a huge sigh of relief 12 minutes from time when Marcus Dackers' powerful strike hit the inside of the woodwork but somehow stayed out as the visitors went searching for the breakthrough.
The frontman then lacked composure at the death as he blazed over in injury-time as the game went to penalties before then missing the final spot-kick as Kelty picked up the win.

David Gray: Hibernian will be fully prepared for Partizan Belgrade tie

David Gray has no concerns about Hibernian's ability to handle a Conference League trip to Partizan Belgrade so soon after their Premiership opener away to Dundee on Sunday. The Hibees suffered an agonising 3-2 aggregate defeat in their Europa League second qualifying round tie against Midtjylland after the Danes struck the decisive goal in the 29th minute of extra-time in Thursday's second leg. Gray's side now parachute into the Conference League third qualifying round, where they will face Partizan in the Serbian capital next Thursday. 'We'll do everything we can to make it as easy as possible for the players,' the manager said of their gruelling start to the campaign. 'The one thing you want to always do is you want to make sure they're going into it as fresh as you can. The Belgrade game will take care of itself by the time we get to that. 'The plans will go in place to make sure we can get there the easiest way, the quickest way, that you stay over, all these things that come with that. You travel a day early, but that will all take care of itself. Everything is geared up now towards Dundee. 'We'll make sure we get everybody clear with the game-plan ready to go up there to make sure we try and win the game. Then we'll look forward to Thursday night in Europe again, which naturally the players will all be ready for.' Hibs found out a week past Monday that Partizan were a possible opponent if they lost their Europa League qualifier and now that scenario has been confirmed, Gray and his backroom staff will ratchet up their preparations. 'I think you're always looking at potential things you could face,' he said when asked if he had spent much time studying the Serbs. 'You have an eye across everything. 'The players aren't aware of any of that yet, that's the whole point of your analysis department. As coaches, we're always preparing for what the possible outcomes could be.' Hibs' squad could look different by the time they head to Serbia, with Scotland defender Grant Hanley and former Clermont midfielder Yohann Magnin on their radar and defender Lewis Miller reportedly close to joining Blackburn. Gray believes his players will have benefited from the way they stood up to Midtjylland over two legs. 'We were still not at our absolute best, we can still improve in certain situations,' he said. 'But Midtjylland are a big, strong, powerful side and we defended them incredibly well. 'It's great for the players to test themselves against elite-level opposition. They were a Champions League team last season for a reason, they've got top, top players, and it's great for our players to feel that.' Premiership opener marks 'fresh start' for Pressley

Former Dundee striker Rory Loy says the board's shock sacking of Tony Docherty put an "unnecessary amount of pressure" on successor Steven Pressley, who is now striving to overcome a rocky side were knocked out of the League Cup group stage after losing two of their four matches. They open their Premiership campaign on Sunday at home to Hibs - who were beaten in extra time by Midtjylland in Europa League qualifying on Thursday night - and Loy sees it as a fresh start for the new manager. "I think Sunday presents a completely clean slate for Pressley and Dundee," he told the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast."I do understand it's been a poor start but it's now the start of the league campaign. The only winners out of last night's Hibs tie, given that Hibs went out and went to extra time, were Dundee. "So Presley will be looking at this going, 'Let's change the narrative, let's go and win on Sunday, beat the team that finished third last year, get the crowd up at home and approach the season in a positive frame of mind.'"It is going to take time but I also think the Dundee board, given their actions in sacking Doherty, and that's not Pressley's fault, have put an unnecessary amount of pressure on Pressley because the fans were so split and so frustrated."I think with the sacking it automatically puts more pressure on the new manager, which isn't fair on Presley. "But I think he'll see Sunday as a clean slate and a chance to go and start the season well."
