Amirudin confident of staying as MB despite Tengku Zafrul's PKR move

PETALING JAYA : Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari says he intends to remain in his post despite speculation that Tengku Zafrul Aziz's anticipated entry into PKR could see a challenge to his position.
Amirudin, a PKR vice-president, said the move was unlikely to trigger a by-election or displace him as menteri besar, given that the state has just over two years left in its current term, Harian Metro reported.
'God willing, I will remain as menteri besar.
'He (Tengku Zafrul) is going to perform the hajj pilgrimage, and I have asked him to pray for me,' he was quoted as saying after an event in Selayang today.
Yesterday, Tengku Zafrul announced that he had submitted his resignation as an Umno member and would be applying to join PKR, led by Anwar Ibrahim.
Citing 'compatibility and suitability', Tengku Zafrul said he decided to leave Umno after seeking advice from friends within and outside the party, including party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
His announcement, however, drew a sharp backlash, with Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki warning PKR against accepting him.
PKR, on the other hand, has said it will consider input from grassroots members and its partners in the unity government before deciding on the application.
Amirudin also said Tengku Zafrul's entry into PKR could bolster the party's credibility and expressed confidence that they could work well together.
'For example, in several meetings and government dealings, he (as investment, trade and industry minister) has been involved in the aerospace and semiconductor sectors, and we have established strong collaborations,' he said.
When asked about the impact on relations with Umno, Amirudin said that a lengthy discussion took place today but declined to disclose details.
'I believe an understanding can be or has been reached, but I am not fully informed about it,' he said.

Public tip-offs lead to man's arrest three hours after botched robbery of teen, grandmother in Johor
ISKANDAR PUTERI, June 3 — Police arrested a 33-year-old man just three hours after he allegedly attempted to rob a teenage girl and her grandmother at a house in Gelang Patah here on Sunday. Iskandar Puteri district police chief ACP M Kumarasan said in the 11.30am incident, the victims, a 14-year-old Chinese national and her grandmother, in her 70s, were at home when they were confronted by an unknown man. 'The suspect ordered the victims to hand over their valuables before choking one of them, resulting in a struggle between the suspect and both victims. 'The suspect then fled the scene after failing to obtain the valuables. Both victims sustained injuries and were referred to the hospital for treatment,' he said in a statement today. Acting on information received, a team from the Iskandar Puteri district police headquarters' Criminal Investigation Division together with officers from the Tanjung Kupang police station arrested the suspect at around 2.30pm on the same day. A background check revealed that the suspect has two prior criminal records, while the initial urine screening test came back negative for drugs. 'Police also seized a T-shirt and a pair of shorts believed to have been worn during the incident. The suspect has been remanded for seven days from June 2 to June 8 to assist in the investigations,' he added. The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery. The offence is punishable by up to 20 years' imprisonment and may also include a fine or whipping, if convicted. M Kumarasan also expressed his appreciation to members of the public for providing information that led to the swift arrest of the suspect. — Bernama
