Nation acted swiftly to face economic, geopolitical shocks, says PM
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia was among the earliest nations to act swiftly and decisively to shield its industries, businesses and people from global economic and geopolitical shocks, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
'We have rolled out strategic and comprehensive actions across all sectors to preserve our economic stability and national competitiveness.'
Anwar was speaking at Istana Negara yesterday in conjunction with the official birthday of His Majesty the King of Malaysia Sultan Ibrahim.
He said the government responded swiftly and strategically to a host of global disruptions, from geopolitical conflicts to rising trade tariffs.
Anwar added that the nation's true strength goes beyond economic metrics and lies in the resilience and resolve of its people.
'Our agricultural sector, local products and domestic industries remain the backbone of the economy, all driven by a patriotic and increasingly self-reliant populace.
'The unwavering support of the people reflects not only patriotism but also an acute awareness of the need for self-sufficiency in these uncertain times.'
Malaysia, as Asean chair, has taken an active role in shaping regional diplomacy.
Anwar highlighted the recent Asean Summit as a diplomatic milestone, the first to bring together Asean, the Gulf Cooperation Council and China on a single platform.
He described the achievement as testament to Malaysia's commitment to global collaboration, shared prosperity and common diplomatic interests.
Anwar also praised the success of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition, crediting it to the professionalism of the Armed Forces and the strong coordination between public and private sectors.
Looking ahead to Visit Malaysia Year 2026, Anwar said the campaign would not only reinvigorate tourism but also serve as a vital engine for economic growth and job creation.
'It is an expression of our love for the country, our culture and our heritage. Malaysia will welcome the world with smiles, warmth and the genuine hospitality of our people.'
Reaffirming the government's dedication to comprehensive reforms under the Malaysia Madani framework, Anwar said development must remain people-focused and rooted in values such as justice, dignity and compassion.
'Infrastructure development is not just about mega-projects like the East Coast Rail Link and the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone.
'We are prioritising essential public services – upgrading schools, enhancing hospitals and improving transport networks.'
He added that economic restructuring would continue, with emphasis on attracting high-quality investments, empowering SMEs, accelerating innovation and technology and ensuring that every Malaysian, regardless of race or background, has a fair shot at success.
Touching on national unity, Anwar stressed that cohesion is not a luxury but a necessity in an unpredictable world.
'In a world of rapid change and rising challenges, unity is indispensable. All efforts to strengthen national integration will be intensified to ensure that no one is left behind in our shared pursuit of a brighter future.'
He expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the King's wise and unifying leadership.
'May Allah SWT continue to bless His Majesty to reign with strength, health and enduring wisdom.
'The people reaffirm their steadfast loyalty to His Majesty and remain united in shared commitment to the prosperity and progress of our beloved nation.'

PM Anwar Proposes Strategic Housing Development Near Public Transport
GENERAL PETALING JAYA, June 4 (Bernama) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has proposed that new people's housing projects be developed on or near public transport stations, as a move to encourage more comprehensive use of the public transport system. Anwar said that such a housing development concept would not only provide more strategic residences for low-income groups but also pave the way for a more sustainable and organised urban lifestyle. 'There are proposals to develop housing directly on top of public transport stations, but this requires certain amendments (to laws) and is currently being worked on. 'An example is the Kota MADANI project, where I emphasised comprehensive and centralised basic amenities for the welfare of the people, including vertical development,' he said. The Prime Minister was speaking at the Malaysia MADANI Scholars' Forum (FIM) Series 6 at Menara Prasarana here, tonight. The forum, organised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), discussed the topic 'Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality, and Sustainability of Public Transport'. Also participating as panellists were Transport Minister Anthony Loke; Prasarana Malaysia Berhad President and Group Chief Executive Officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah; and Universiti Putra Malaysia Vice-Chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah. Meanwhile, Anwar said that open discourse platforms like the forum were crucial to ensure government policies were formulated by considering the voices of various parties, including academicians, industry experts, government supporters, and even the opposition. Anwar said the organisation of such forums proved that the government did not shut down criticism, but instead encouraged differing views, provided they were delivered professionally and constructively.

Singapore and Philippines to expand collaboration in renewable energy, sustainability and healthcare
MANILA: Singapore and the Philippines will deepen their collaboration in several areas, including renewable energy, sustainability, healthcare and civil service development. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr announced this at a joint press conference on Wednesday (June 4), the first day of an introductory visit to Manila by PM Wong. At the press conference at Malacanang Palace following their meeting, PM Wong thanked President Marcos for his invitation to visit and said the bilateral relationship 'has never been better'. 'It is a partnership that has been carefully nurtured over the decades by successive generations of leaders and officials,' he said. 'It is built on a high degree of mutual trust and respect, and it has enabled mutually beneficial cooperation over a wide range of areas, for example in trade and investments.' On renewable energy, the two countries agreed to deepen both bilateral and regional cooperation, and to accelerate efforts towards realising the Asean power grid. This is a plan to connect the electricity networks of the group's 10 member countries to enable cross-border power trading by 2045. Marcos said Singapore will continue to be a major partner in the Philippines' aspiration to diversify its energy sources, and hailed the robust ties between the two countries. PM Wong said Singapore companies are interested in renewable energy in the Philippines, including solar and wind projects. 'Such projects can generate economic opportunities for the Philippines, while supporting the Philippines' renewable energy targets,' he added. On the sustainability front, the two countries are working to finalise a legally binding implementation agreement for cross-border carbon credit transfers that is aligned with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The Paris Agreement governs international cooperation to tackle climate change, and includes guidelines for countries to trade carbon credits to meet their climate targets. An implementation agreement will facilitate commercial participation in carbon credit projects, which can spur technology transfer, green investment and create good jobs, said PM Wong. Anwar shares royal compliment on Malaysia's medical expertise
PETALING JAYA: Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah praised the quality and expertise of doctors at the National Heart Institute (IJN) after receiving treatment there. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed this during the Higher Education Ministry's Ilmuan Malaysia Madani forum titled "Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality and Sustainability of Public Transport." "His Majesty told me that, as someone with exposure to and experience with some of the world's best medical centres, he was very satisfied with the quality of service, excellence, and expertise of our doctors at IJN," he said. Anwar added that while the government welcomes criticism, Malaysians should also recognise national achievements, especially in healthcare. "So while we allow criticism, which is not a problem, we must also recognise the strengths we have, and there must be the drive to push ourselves to do better," he said. The Sultan of Brunei was in Kuala Lumpur for the 46th Asean Summit with other regional leaders. On May 27, he was reportedly feeling fatigued and was advised by health experts to rest at IJN. Anwar also spoke about his conversation with President of Guinea-Bissau General Umaro Sissoco Embaló, during which he asked why Malaysia was chosen despite limited bilateral trade. "His answer was that he follows developments here and sees Malaysia as a country on the rise, with significant potential. That's why he chose to come," he said. Embaló arrived today for a three-day visit—his first since taking office as president in February 2020. Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations in November 1974. In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Guinea-Bissau reached RM4.1 million, with Malaysian exports amounting to RM4.04 million and imports standing at RM0.06 million.
