The European Union on Saturday condemned Macau's arrest of former pro-democracy lawmaker Au Kam-san, saying it only heightened concerns about the 'erosion of political pluralism' in the Chinese territory. Au is the first person to be arrested under the city's national security law.
Authorities alleged on Thursday that the 68-year-old primary school teacher had ties to foreign groups endangering China.
'This development adds to the existing concerns about the ongoing erosion of political pluralism and freedom of speech in the Macao Special Administrative Region,' said European Union spokesperson Anitta Hipper in a statement.
'The EU recalls that the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms is a central element of the Macao Basic Law and 'one country, two systems',' set up in the former Portuguese colony.
The territory near Hong Kong and known for its casinos, has retained its own legal system since China took it back from Portugal in 1999.
The security law, which restricts political activity, was passed in 2009 but broadened in 2023.
Au, a legislator up to 2021, has campaigned on social welfare, corruption and electoral reform.

Pope's 'Jubilee of Youth' ends with mass for 1 million

Pope's 'Jubilee of Youth' ends with mass for 1 million Pope Leo delivers his homily to a sea of people in Tor Vergata, Rome. Photo: Reuters Pope Leo XIV presided over a final mass in Rome for over one million young people on Sunday, the culmination of a youth pilgrimage that has drawn Catholics from across the world. "Aspire to great things, to holiness, wherever you are. Do not settle for less," Pope Leo told the young people during his homily. The week-long pilgrimage ending on Sunday, a highlight of the Jubilee holy year, was an enormous undertaking for the Vatican, with half a million young pilgrims in Rome for most of the week. On Saturday night, before a twilight vigil led by the pope, organisers had confirmed the attendance of 800,000 people in the vast, open-air space on Rome's eastern outskirts, and on Sunday the Vatican said that number had grown to one million people. Most of those attending slept on the ground overnight in tents, in sleeping bags or on mats in anticipation of Sunday's mass. In his homily, the first American pope and former missionary encouraged the gathered youth to "spread your enthusiasm and the witness of your faith to everyone you meet". The Vatican has sought to highlight pilgrims who managed to travel to Rome from war-torn regions, with Leo saying on Sunday the Church and the world's youth were with them in solidarity. "We are closer than ever to young people who suffer the most serious evils, which are caused by other human beings," he said in his Angelus, speaking in English. "We are with the young people of Gaza. We are with the young people of Ukraine, with those of every land bloodied by war," said the pontiff, 69. "My young brothers and sisters, you are the sign that a different world is possible, a world of fraternity and friendship, where conflicts are not resolved with weapons, but with dialogue." (AFP)

HK to push 'headquarters economy', Northern Metropolis

HK to push 'headquarters economy', Northern Metropolis John Lee says Hong Kong is recording positive economic growth. Photo: RTHK Attracting global enterprises and introducing high-end industries to the Northern Metropolis are among the government's development strategies, Chief Executive John Lee said on Sunday as he held a second town hall meeting with citizens before delivering September's Policy Address. He revealed the government has received more than 5,500 opinions since the public consultation for the policy blueprint was launched in June, marking a nearly 10 percent increase compared to last year. Speaking at the town hall, Lee said Hong Kong should find ways to attract more global firms to set up their headquarters in the SAR. Retaining talent is crucial to Hong Kong's competitiveness, he added. 'Statistics show that Hong Kong has recorded a new high in the number of newly-registered non-local companies, which means we have attracted international enterprises, among which many are from the mainland, but there are also global companies. We will continue to work on this area,' he said. Lee also said the government aims to introduce high-end industries to the Northern Metropolis, a key development project for Hong Kong. During the town hall meeting, an audience member suggested that the government support non-Chinese speaking students who wish to study Putonghua, so they can pursue careers in the Greater Bay Area. Lee agreed that there should be education policies which cater to their needs. 'The ethnic minority population, in my mind, is a major part of our family. So we hope to integrate them with the community's development,' he said. 'In terms of education, I agree that some special measures should be introduced to help them. Over the years, we have allocated resources to facilitate ethnic minorities' learning of Chinese and we are listening to people's opinions to improve our measures.' Other matters raised during the meeting included tourism, helping people familiarise themselves with digital services, elderly care and Chinese medicine development. On the economy, Lee noted that Hong Kong is experiencing economic restructuring, while seeing positive growth. The CE also pointed out the government has become faster when it comes to helping residents during extreme weather events or power outages.
