MNF MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo's body brought to Aizawl from Delhi, last rites on Wednesday
The body of the two-time legislator from Dampa arrived at the Lengpui airport around 1.30 pm, and will reach his home at Luangmual neighbourhood in the western part of Aizawl in the evening, they said.
Aizawl, July 22 (PTI) The mortal remains of Mizo National Front (MNF) MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo, who died at a hospital in Delhi, were brought to Aizawl on Tuesday afternoon.
Sailo, whose performance as opposition member in the assembly was praised by many, died at Max Superspeciality Hospital in Delhi around 9 pm on Monday after battling with complicated ailments, including scrub typhus and pneumonia, for nearly a month.
The 65-year-old MNF leader was flown to Delhi on June 29 following a fever.
Although he initially showed signs of improvement, his condition deteriorated a few days ago and became worse on Sunday, following which he was put on ventilator support, family sources said.
Born in 1960, Sailo joined MNF and went underground when he was only 16.
He actively took part in the secessionist movement, spearheaded by the MNF led by late Laldenga, for 20 years till the underground group signed the historic Mizo peace accord with the Centre in June 1986.
He contested the assembly polls in 2018 and got elected from Dampa in Mamit district, defeating his nearest opponent, Congress nominee Lalrobiaka, by a margin of 1,657 votes.
He was re-elected from the same constituency in the last assembly polls, held in November 2023.
Sailo held many important posts in the MNF and was a member of the national core committee of the party till his last breath.
The MNF described Sailo's death as 'the collapse of one of the big pillars of the party'.
Governor VK Singh, Chief Minister Lalduhoma and state Congress president Lal Thanzara mourned his death.
'I am deeply saddened by the passing of Pu Lalrintluanga Sailo. His dedicated contributions and tireless service to the state of Mizoram and its people will be fondly remembered,' the governor said in a social media post.
Lalduhoma said he was deeply shocked by the sudden demise of Sailo, whom he hailed as a diligent person, orator and good debater.
The CM said he had instructed officers and staff of the Mizoram House in Delhi to do whatever is required to assist Sailo's family. PTI CORR SOM

10,000 cops, anti-drone system: Delhi police gear up for Independence Day
With Independence Day approaching, robust security measures have been rolled out across the national capital. Delhi Police said on Thursday that over 10,000 personnel, including paramilitary forces and special commandos, have been deployed to ensure law and order. Security preparations also include intensified foot and night patrolling, plainclothes teams in sensitive areas, and multiple drills. (Sanchit Khanna/HT) Police Commissioner SBK Singh has directed special commissioners and district-level officers to maintain heightened vigilance in their jurisdictions. A senior official told news agency PTI that multilayered security will be in place at the Red Fort, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the nation. In addition to on-ground personnel, advanced surveillance tools - including CCTV cameras, drone detection systems, and facial recognition technology - will be used to monitor the venue and surrounding areas. Snipers and rooftop teams will be positioned on high-rises near the Red Fort, while access to restricted zones will be tightly controlled. Security preparations also include intensified foot and night patrolling, plainclothes teams in sensitive areas, and multiple drills. Cyber units are monitoring social media platforms to detect and neutralise any potential online threats or misinformation campaigns. Coordination with central intelligence agencies has been strengthened, and anti-sabotage checks, vehicle barricading, and identity verifications are underway across the city. Special teams are on round-the-clock duty at airports, metro stations, railway stations, and inter-state bus terminals. In his first major directive since taking charge, Commissioner Singh has banned the use of sub-conventional aerial platforms - including drones, paragliders, and hot air balloons - over Delhi between August 2 and 16. The order notes that such platforms could be exploited by anti-social elements or terror groups to conduct airborne attacks or para-jumping stunts. Foot patrols have been stepped up in public areas such as markets, bus terminals, and metro stations, with senior officers instructed to personally oversee preparations on the ground. Surprise inspections and flag marches are planned across districts to boost public confidence and deter miscreants. Officials said Delhi Police are working in close coordination with central agencies to ensure foolproof security during the celebrations.

Protests held against Karnataka CM's close aide in Mysuru, Congress seeks his suspension
A close aide of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has landed himself in a soup following his alleged remarks against the Vokkaliga community, triggering protests in H.D. Kote and Sargur taluks in Mysuru district on Thursday. The two taluks witnessed a 'bandh' with traders voluntarily downing their shutters in many parts and members of the Vokkaliga community assembling in large numbers to stage a demonstration. They marched through the main thoroughfares of the town and sought the externment of G.V. Seetharam, former chairperson of the Karnataka Bhovi Development Corporation, for his alleged remarks against the Vokkaligas. The protestors also burnt an effigy of Seetharam. The immediate cause for the alleged remarks by Seetharam was a query posed by activist Paramesh who accused the former of land grabbing. This resulted in a war of words and Seetharam allegedly abused him and insinuated the members of the Vokkaliga community. Meanwhile, the Block Congress Committee of H.D. Kote has taken the issue seriously and urged the district president of the party to suspend Seetharam for his alleged remarks. A communique issued by the H.D. Kote block Congress states that Seetharam's remarks could adversely affect the political fortunes of the party in the taluk panchayat and the zilla panchayat elections, and hence action should be initiated against him immediately.
