Jaishankar to step up diplomatic push on visit to France, Belgium

The Hindu09-06-2025
On his third visit to Europe in the past few months, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar left on Sunday (June 8, 2025) for a week-long visit to France and Belgium. He is expected to meet with his counterparts in both governments, and in the European Commission and European Parliament in Brussels.
This visit is part of the government's efforts to step up its diplomatic engagement post Operation Sindoor to garner support for India's fight against terrorism.
'The visit of EAM is expected to further deepen India's friendly relations with the European Union, France and Belgium and give renewed momentum to ongoing cooperation in diverse areas,' the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, announcing the visit from June 8 to 14. In March, Mr. Jaishankar had travelled to the U.K. and Ireland, and in May, he had visited the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany.
In France, Mr. Jaishankar is scheduled to visit Paris for bilateral talks with French Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barrot, and to Marseille to address the 'Mediterranean Raisina Dialogue', a conference of the Ministry and Observer Research Foundation (ORF). This is significant because Marseille is one of the European ports along with Trieste, Italy, and Piraeus, Greece that are in the running for the India-Middle East-Europe-Economic Corridor (IMEC) route, and although ambitions for the project launched in 2023 have been dimmed due to the Israel-Gaza conflict, New Delhi is keen to keep discussions on it alive.
In Brussels, he will hold a 'Strategic Dialogue' with EU High Representative and Vice-President Kaja Kallas, the Ministry said. Mr. Jaishankar is also expected to raise India's request for the repatriation of diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, who is under arrest pending a trial for extradition to India to face charges of fraud and embezzlement.
Mr. Jaishankar will end his tour in time for the G-7 summit in Canada, although it is unclear whether he will attend. He is also scheduled to travel to Washington for the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting in early July and could accompany PM Modi to the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 5-6.

‘Against Military Ethos': Huge row as KBC hosts Op Sindoor icons Sofiya, Vyomika & Prerna

New Delhi: The appearance of Indian Armed Forces officers on KBC has ignited controversy, with critics accusing the Union government of exploiting military for political gains. Amitabh Bachchan will host decorated officers from the Indian Armed Forces in the Independence Day special episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) season 17. In a promo shared by the channel, Amitabh Bachchan is seen welcoming Col Sofiya Qureshi (Indian Army), Wg Cmdr Vyomika Singh (Indian Air Force) and Commander Prerna Deosthalee (Indian Navy). The special episode will feature the officers recounting key moments from India's Operation Sindoor conducted against terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. While the officers likely sought clearance from the concerned department, their appearance has nonetheless triggered controversy, with many netizens dubbing it a 'PR stunt' and an attempt at 'political mileage.' Both Colonel Sofiya and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh held press briefings while the mission was ongoing. The makers recently released a teaser of the episode, set to air on August 15, showing KBC host Amitabh Bachchan giving the officers a grand welcome. 'This is just unbelievable. Operation Sindoor heroes appearing on national TV show KBC Just because one 'nationalist' party wants to milk some votes?' one user posted on X. "Have you ever seen anything like this after a military operation in any serious country? How is this even allowed for someone in service? The current regime is shamelessly using our forces for its petty politics and hyper-nationalism," another user said. 'Our Army was sacrosanct, above politics, beyond PR. Today, Modi govt parades serving soldiers on shows like KBC for image building. Even our Army has been made a political tool for Modi's PR. Our forces are to defend the nation, not a politician's brand,' a user posted on X. A user also questioned if armed forces protocol allows sending officers on reality shows like KBC. "The Indian Armed Forces have some protocol, some dignity and huge respect. Politicians are ruining it for their personal benefit. That's shameful," he said. Priyanka Chaturvedi of the Shiv Sena (UBT) also commented on the show. 'Our heroic women in Uniform who went on to become the face of Operation Sindoor have been invited by a private entertainment channel on their show. This private entertainment channel's parent company Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has also bagged the broadcasting rights of the Asia Cup till 2031. Yes, the very channel that seeks to earn revenue through India vs Pakistan cricket matches. Now join the dots,' Priyanka Chaturvedi posted on X. The Central government or the Defence ministry didn't immediately comment on the social media criticism.

S Jaishankar To Visit Russia Next Week, Hold Talks With Top Leaders

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will travel to Moscow next week to hold crucial talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, amid some strain in India's ties with the US over New Delhi's procurement of crude oil from Russia. Mr Jaishankar's trip to Russia comes days after National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval travelled to Russia and met President Vladimir Putin and several top-ranking officials. The two sides are also likely to give final touches to various elements of Putin's visit to India later this year, people familiar with the external affairs minister's trip to Moscow said. Deputy spokesperson of Russia's foreign ministry Aleksey Fadeyev said in Moscow that the heads of the two countries' foreign offices will discuss "most important issues of the bilateral agenda". The people cited above said Mr Jaishankar will be on a two-day visit to Russia and is likely to call on Putin, besides holding wide-ranging talks with Foreign Minister Lavrov. The external affairs minister is also expected to co-chair the 26th session of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic, Scientific-Technological and Cultural Cooperation. The Russian delegation at the dialogue is likely to be led by First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov. India's continued energy procurement from Russia is likely to figure in Mr Jaishankar's meetings with Russian leaders in Moscow. US President Donald Trump issued an executive order last week, slapping an additional 25-per cent tariff on Indian goods as a penalty for New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil. The additional duties raised the overall tariff on India to 50 per cent. Defending its purchase of Russian crude oil, India has been maintaining that its energy procurement is driven by national interest and market dynamics. India turned to purchasing Russian oil sold at a discount after western countries imposed sanctions on Moscow and shunned its supplies over its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Consequently, from a mere 1.7 per cent share in total oil imports in 2019-20, Russia's share increased to 35.1 per cent in 2024-25, and it is now the biggest oil supplier to India. During Mr Jaishankar's visit to Moscow, the two sides are also likely to deliberate on the Ukraine conflict. India has been consistently calling for ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled to Moscow in July last year and told Putin that a solution to the Ukraine conflict is not possible on the battlefield and peace efforts do not succeed in the midst of bombs and bullets. The next month, Modi visited the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv and conveyed to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that both Ukraine and Russia should sit together, without wasting time, to end the war.

S Jaishankar to meet Russian counterpart after China foreign min's India visit

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi is set to visit India next week for talks on the border issue, days before external affairs minister S Jaishankar travels to Moscow for a trade and economic dialogue with his counterpart Sergey Lavrov, with both meetings crucial for New Delhi's ties with Beijing and Moscow amid strains in the relationship with Washington. Within days of Wang's visit, Jaishankar will travel to Moscow during August 21-23 for talks with Lavrov.(PTI File Photo) Wang is expected to be in New Delhi on August 18 for talks with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval under the mechanism of Special Representatives for the border issue, people familiar with the matter said on condition of anonymity. This will be a follow-up to Doval's trip to Beijing last December and part of preparations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to China at the end of this month for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, they said. A meeting between Wang and Jaishankar is not being ruled out, the people said. Within days of Wang's visit, Jaishankar will travel to Moscow during August 21-23 for talks with Lavrov and to co-chair a meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC), they said. This is the main mechanism overseeing trade and economic cooperation between the two sides and the meeting will be an opportunity to discuss matters such as the impact of US President Donald Trump's punitive tariff on India's purchases of Russian crude, the people said. The visits by Wang and Jaishankar are yet to be formally announced by China or India, though preparations have been underway for quite some time, the people said. Talks in the Special Representatives format resumed after Modi and President Xi Jinping met in the Russian city of Kazan on October 23 last year – two days after India and China reached an understanding on ending the military standoff on the Line of Actual Control – and agreed to revive several mechanisms to normalise bilateral ties and address the long-festering border dispute. However, both visits have assumed greater significance in light of a downturn in India-US relations in recent weeks on trade-related issues, primarily due to Trump slapping a tariff on Indian goods and an additional penalty for Russian oil purchases. The two Special Representatives are expected to consider confidence-building measures to bolster peace and tranquillity in the border areas and to take forward efforts aimed at seeking a mutually acceptable framework for settling the border issue, the people said. At their last meeting in December, Doval and Wang had 'resolved to inject more vitality into this process', according to an Indian readout. There have been several signs of a thaw in India-China ties following the chill caused by the border face-off, which saw both sides amassing nearly 50,000 troops each in Ladakh sector of LAC. In April, the two sides resumed the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra to the Tibet region after a gap of five years, and this was followed by India resuming tourist visas for Chinese nationals in July. India and China are also in advanced negotiations on resuming direct flights and trade through selected border posts, and there has been 'forward movement' on restrictions imposed by China on fertiliser exports to India. The Special Representatives are also expected to review cross-border cooperation and data-sharing on cross-border rivers. India's concerns about China's construction of what is set to be the world's largest hydropower dam on the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra river too could figure in the talks, the people said. The Indian side formally raised the construction of the $167-billion dam on Yarlung Tsangpo river in Tibet with China and called for transparency and consultations on the project. Wang's meetings in New Delhi will also prepare the grounds for PM Modi's planned visit to China to participate in the SCO Summit in Tianjin on August 31 and September 1. Modi is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Xi on the margins of the summit, the people said. On Wednesday, Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Alexey Fadeev confirmed Jaishankar will hold talks with Lavrov on August 21 before participating in the 26th session of the IRIGC-TEC. The trade and economic dialogue is co-chaired by Jaishankar and Russian first deputy prime minister Denis Manturov, and it was last held in New Delhi in November 2024. The upcoming dialogue will be an opportunity for India to discuss various trade-related issues, including the current imbalance in trade and greater trade settlement in national currencies in the face of Western sanctions and tariffs, the people said. India-Russia trade reached a record high of $68.7 billion in FY 2024-25, though Indian exports accounted for only $4.88 billion. India has repeatedly raised issues such as greater access to Russian markets and diversification of trade, which has been dominated by increased uptake of Russian crude in the past three years. As part of measures to bolster rupee-ruble trade, the Reserve Bank of India on August 5 allowed authorised dealer (AD) category-1 banks to open special rupee vostro accounts for their foreign correspondent banks, and this was followed a week later by the easing of rules to allow funds in these accounts to be invested in government securities and treasury bills. The meeting of the IRIGC-TEC will be followed by a meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-MTC), for which the Russian defence minister will travel to New Delhi, the people said. The meeting of these bodies is part of preparations for a planned visit to India by President Vladimir Putin for the annual bilateral summit later this year.
