Schools to strengthen road safety awareness, circular soon: Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi
COIMBATORE: The School Education Department will send a circular to schools urging them to strengthen road safety awareness during morning prayer activities, said School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi here on Thursday.
The public do not follow road safety norms despite the police department's efforts to raise road safety awareness, the minister bemoaned while speaking at a programme organised by the district administration and Uyir, a Coimbatore-based NGO, at Corporation Kalaiarangam. Anbil Mahesh urged people to cooperate with police efforts and follow road safety norms properly to ensure safe travel on roads. He released the 'Uyir Kutty Cops' Road Safety Curriculum workbook and faculty guide at the function.
"Uyir and the district administration jointly released road safety awareness books for school students. The initiative aims to educate children about road safety," the minister said. "Students will learn about road safety if teachers explain signboards and road safety norms daily during morning prayer activities. This will create an impact on road safety awareness in their childhood. To execute this in schools, the School Education Department will send a circular soon," he said.
"We should drive vehicles responsibly and carefully, keeping in mind the safety of others. This way, we can avoid road accidents and reduce their occurrence," Anbil Mahesh further said.
He noted that road safety clubs exist in schools, but they are not active as teachers fail to monitor them as they are focused on teaching At the function a minute of silence was observed in honour of the people killed in the Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday. Coimbatore District Collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar, Coimbatore city police commissioner A Saravana Sundar and others were present.

Illegal excavation: CBI files FIR against ex-CONCOR official, firm over Rs 1.62 crore scam in Nagpur
New Delhi: The CBI has registered an FIR to investigate a Rs 1.62 crore scam involving illegal excavation at a Nagpur-based premises of Container Corporation of India (CONCOR), allegedly involving the PSU's former senior official and a private firm. The FIR, registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and penal provisions related to criminal conspiracy and criminal misconduct by a public servant, was filed on the direction of the Lokpal of India. The federal agency booked CONCOR's then Deputy General Manager (Civil) -- while keeping his identity confidential -- and Nagpur-based company Aditya Enterprises, along with unknown public servants and private persons. The CBI said in its FIR, 'Being in-charge of the site, the DGM (Civil) allowed Aditya Enterprises to do misappropriation by unauthorised/illegal excavation to the tune of Rs 1,62,76,123.50, thereby causing wrongful loss to CONCOR Ltd.' The illegal excavation came to light after a complaint was formally lodged with the Lokpal. After receiving the complaint, the anti-corruption watchdog directed the CBI to keep the identity of the complainant confidential. The CONCOR premises episode had also turned focus on the rampant illegal murrum–reddish soil excavation on government lands in Nagpur. Murrum is commonly used in construction, particularly for plinth filling, footing pit backfill. Such soil is found in humid tropical or equatorial regions. The CBI said in its FIR that Aditya Enterprises has its office in Sanmarg Nagar, Hudkeshwar, Nagpur. Sources said officials of the firm are to be questioned over the illegal excavation scam. While approving the registration of an FIR, a senior CBI official directed his team to take up the investigation into the allegedly illegal excavation while keeping in mind the Lokpal's directions to keep the identity of both the complainant and the CONCOR DGM confidential. Referring to the May 22 order of the Lokpal, the CBI officer said, 'In the said order. Lokpal of India has also directed to keep the identity of the complainant and RPS provisions (respondent public servant) confidential as per provisions of Rule 4 and other enabling provisions of the Lokpal Complaint Rules, 2020.'

Former BJP MP's son dies by suicide in Rajasthan's Udaipur
A former MP's son allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his room in a library in Rajasthan's Udaipur, police said on Saturday. Ashish Bhagora, the son of former BJP MP from Salumbar Mahaveer Bhagora, was a library operator in Amba Mata area and was living in a room of the library for some time. On Saturday morning, he was found dead in his room. The body was lying on the ground and a piece of cloth was hanging from the ceiling. "Prima facie, he hanged himself from the ceiling last night and the body later fell on the ground. The body was shifted to the mortuary of the government hospital for postmortem," police said. His father Mahaveer Bhagora died due to corona infection in 2021. The matter came to light when some students reached the library and called him. When there was no response, they somehow entered the room and found him dead. The matter is being investigated to ascertain the causes of the suicide, the police said. Discussing suicides can be triggering for some. However, suicides are preventable.
