Nilambur sets tone for future polls; emotional topics trump real issues
MALAPPURAM: UDF is pinning hopes on the possible consolidation of anti-CPM Muslim votes that are likely to be divided among Aryadan Shoukath, P V Anvar, who is fighting as independent, and SDPI candidate Sadiq Naduthodi. There is fear in the UDF camp that the votes against the 'anti-people policies' of the LDF government may be divided among these candidates as all of them raised similar issues against the CPM in the campaign.
Jama'at had intensified the campaign with added vigour as the stake is high for the organisation. More than anything else, the CPM raised the issue of Welfare Party's support to the UDF as the main component of the campaign. The UDF believes that the CPM has ulterior motive of garnering the Hindu votes behind singling out the Jama'at, sidelining all other issues including the performance of the government and the development of the constituency. CPM state secretary M V Govindan's controversial remarks on the RSS became an unexpected tool for the UDF to buttress the argument.
Welfare Party state president Razal Paleri said it is imperative to defeat the RSS-CPM coalition in Nilambur. 'The stand taken by the BJP in the initial stages of the election had raised suspicions. Now it is clear as to why the party fielded a weak candidate,' he said in a press release.
In an article published in the Madhyamam daily on Wednesday, Jama'at leader O Abdurrahman said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPM leaders tried to add spice to the campaign by bringing his organisation into the centre of discussions. 'Even before the Welfare Party declared support to the UDF, CPM state secretary M V Govindan and politburo member A Vijayaraghavan competed with each other to keep anti-Jama'at sentiments burning,' he said.
There are also efforts from the UDF to utilise the anti-CPM sentiments raging in organisations that are traditionally loyal to the CPM. Facebook posts of Muhammadali Kinalur, former leader of the Kanthapuram group's Sunni Yuvajana Sangham, were used to put the CPM in trouble. Kinalur, however, clarified that his posts are his personal opinions and not that of any organisation.

He also claimed that neither of the three fronts -- UDF, LDF and NDA -- discussed local issues like wild animal attacks during their campaign. He was also confident that he would get a good share of the UDF and LDF votes. Anvar, presently the state convener of the Trinamool Congress, resigned as MLA of the constituency following his severing of ties with the CPI(M)-led LDF over certain allegations by him against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his close aides. The voting commenced in the morning after a mock polling was carried out to check if the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) were working. In Gujarat, the Visavadar and Kadi assembly constituencies recorded a turnout of 28.15 per cent and 23.85 per cent, respectively, in the first four hours of votingin bypolls The Visavadar seat in Junagadh district recorded a voter turnout of 28.15 per cent by 11 am, while Kadi in Mehsana district registered 23.85 per cent polling. The Visavadar seat was lying vacant since December 2023, after the then AAP legislator Bhupendra Bhayani resigned and joined the ruling BJP. The Kadi seat, reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates, fell vacant on February 4 following the death of BJP MLA Karsan Solanki. In the Visavadar seat, BJP candidate Kirit Patel and Congress nominee Nitin Ranpariya cast their votes in the early hours. The AAP has fielded its former Gujarat president Gopal Italia from Visavadar. He is not registered as a voter in the constituency. Despite its near-total dominance in the state, the BJP has not won the Visavadar seat since 2007. The party leaders are this time hopeful of overcoming the 18-year jinx. In the last assembly election in 2022, AAP's Bhupendra Bhayani defeated BJP's Harshad Ribadiya, a Congress turncoat and former MLA, by 7,063 votes. The Ludhiana West Assembly seat fell vacant following the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January. AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora reached a polling station along with his family members to exercise his franchise. Before casting votes, Arora paid obeisance at a gurdwara, a temple and the Dargah Pir in Phillaur. Speaking to reporters, Arora appealed to the people to come out in large numbers to cast their votes. "Please come out to vote and have maximum voting today," he said. Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu, BJP nominee Jiwan Gupta and SAD's Parupkar Singh Ghuman also cast their votes. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann appealed to voters to cast their votes in the bypoll. "My appeal to the voters of Ludhiana West is that you must exercise your right to vote. The Congress has placed its bet on former minister and Punjab Congress working president Ashu (51). Ashu had been MLA twice from this seat in 2012 and 2017. He was defeated by Gogi by a margin of 7,512 votes in the 2022 Assembly polls. The BJP candidate is a member of the core committee of Punjab BJP . He was earlier the party's state general secretary. The Ludhiana West bypoll is seen as a litmus test for Mann and the ruling party's national leadership which aggressively campaigned to retain this seat. Canada confirms Khalistani extremists using its soil to target India
In a rare admission, Canada's top intelligence agency has echoed what India has been warning about for years — that Canadian soil has become a breeding ground for Khalistani extremism. In its 2024 annual report, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has confirmed that Khalistani extremists continue to operate from within Canada, raising funds, promoting propaganda, and planning violent acts — with India as their primary target. 'Khalistani extremists continue to use Canada as a base for the promotion, fundraising or planning of violence primarily in India,' the report stated, marking the first official acknowledgment of this scale. This is a significant moment for Indian diplomacy, which has long called out Ottawa for turning a blind eye to anti-India elements under the guise of free expression. A diplomatic flashpoint The report's timing couldn't be more crucial. It comes months after a diplomatic firestorm between India and Canada, triggered by former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau's controversial claim in the House of Commons in September 2023. Trudeau alleged that Canadian security agencies were probing 'credible allegations of a potential link' between the Indian government and the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a designated Khalistani terrorist, in British Columbia. India rejected the claim as 'absurd' and retaliated by expelling a top Canadian diplomat. The CSIS report now casts the debate in a new light. Nijjar, chief of the banned Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), was gunned down outside a gurdwara in Surrey on June 18, 2023. His death sparked a cascade of allegations, diplomatic expulsions, and eventually, a pause in trade talks between the two countries. ALSO READ | Tracing extremist roots in Canada The CSIS report also highlights that since the mid-1980s, Canada has witnessed politically motivated violent extremism (PMVE) from Canada-based Khalistani extremists (CBKEs). While drawing a distinction between peaceful advocacy and extremist violence, it clearly identifies a "small group" exploiting Canadian freedoms to pursue a violent agenda against India. 'Real and perceived Khalistani extremism emerging from Canada continues to drive Indian foreign interference activities in Canada,' the report notes, acknowledging that India has responded with its own counter-efforts to mitigate threats from extremist actors. When Canada backtracked: The 2018 report controversy This isn't the first time Khalistani extremism has featured in Canada's official documents. Back in December 2018, Canada's Public Report on the Terrorist Threat mentioned 'Sikh extremism' for the first time, warning of limited attacks but ongoing support from Canadian soil — especially through financing. However, the then Liberal government led by Trudeua faced backlash from Sikh advocacy groups. Accusations flew thick and fast, with Khalistan supporter and Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) chief Gurpatwant Singh Pannun alleging that Trudeau was branding Sikhs as 'terrorists' while relying on them for votes. The Truedeau government then revised the report in April 2019 — quietly removing all references to Sikh extremism and Khalistan. The new version cited a need to 'eliminate terminology that unintentionally impugns an entire religion". Coincidentally, the edit came just hours before Trudeau and his then defence minister Harjit Sajjan attended a Baisakhi celebration hosted by the influential Khalsa Diwan Society in Vancouver. Former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh slammed the revision, calling it a 'dangerous' political move aimed at appeasing the Sikh vote bank. Signs of a reset? Interestingly, the latest report's release closely followed a high-stakes meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the G7 Summit in Alberta. Both sides agreed to restore diplomatic channels by appointing new high commissioners and resuming stalled trade negotiations. Carney, defending his outreach, highlighted India's global economic weight and the need for dialogue, even amid fierce criticism from certain Canadian quarters.
