Fans split on Golden State Valkyries' new mascot
Driving the news: Violet, easily identifiable by her round glasses and big grin, is a raven who knows how to break it down on the dance floor. Our Instagram followers reacted with divided fervor.
What they're saying:"Instantly iconic," @anoyes commented, while @shaketini said, "I like her glasses!!"
"I could see her visiting different areas of the Bay, learning the dances, getting to know all the cultures that make up the Bay Area," @spottedgiraffe2777 added.
One of our readers, Margaret R., also wrote in enthusiastically: "I am OBSESSED with Violet. Liberty can't take up all the mascot rizz." (The New York Liberty's mascot is Ellie the Elephant.)
Yes, but: Not everyone reacted with cheer.
"I feel like it would have been a bit cooler to lean into the actual valkirye theme and maybe ... give her some cool armor or a weapon," @soaphia.g noted.
"Too much cute," @garden22nd agreed.
"Why is she portrayed as SEXY? ... And not in a cool, swaggy way, but more like in a designed-for-the-male-gaze-Dallas-Cowboys-Cheerleaders style? It's just not right for our team of strong, capable women," @goldenstatehaze commented.
Between the lines: Ravens are known as Valkyries' counterparts in Norse mythology and are considered guardians of good fortune.

OKTAGON star Losene Keita lands Patricio Freire fight in Paris after signing with UFC
Losene Keita asked, received, and now he has a big test in front of him. The OKTAGON standout told MMA Junkie in July he thought it was time to join the UFC, and the promotion agrees. Keita (16-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will battle Bellator legend Patricio Freire (37-8 MMA, 1-1 UFC) in a three-round featherweight bout Sept. 6 at UFC Fight Night 258. The event takes place at Accor Arena. A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie following a report from Maitres Fumieres on Instagram. Keita, 27, held both the OKTAGON featherweight and lightweight titles during his 11-fight tenure with the promotion. He has 10 knockouts in 16 professional wins, and his lone loss was due to injury. "It's time," Keita said. "Let's make featherweight great again. I can do both weights actually. I even fought in welterweight before. I fought in lightweight, featherweight. Let's just make fun. Let me knock out people on the biggest platform." Freire, 38, picked up his first UFC win in July when he defeated Dan Ige by unanimous decision. The win came after an unsuccessful promotional debut vs. Yair Rodriguez. The victory was a long-time coming for the 45-fight pro, who spent the majority of his career fighting under the Bellator banner, rewriting the promotion's history book. With the addition, the UFC Fight Night 258 lineup includes:

Liberty fall just short against Lynx to close road trip on tough note
We've got you covered on the Liberty beat Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Madeline Kenney about all things Liberty and WNBA. tRY IT NOW MINNEAPOLIS — Fans at Target Center rose to their feet for the final 44 seconds of Saturday's 2024 WNBA Finals rematch. The Lynx and Liberty had kept the game within single digits the entire second half, and Minnesota was up by one. Advertisement Kayla McBride drained a big 3 that sent the entire arena into a frenzy. Chappell Roan's 'HOT TO GO!' blared from the speakers as teams headed to their respective benches. People reference 'playoff atmospheres' outside postseason play more than they probably should. 4 Natasha Cloud of the New York Liberty drives to the basket during the game against the Minnesota Lynx on August 16, 2025 at Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. NBAE via Getty Images Advertisement But Target Center, especially in the second half, was the rare regular-season exception. How important this game was to each team — both playing without stars and team connectors — was palpable. The Lynx wanted to reiterate that they are the best team in the league and continue their revenge tour against the team that beat them in the Finals. Check out more newsletters Advertisement The Liberty wanted to correct their wrongs from the previous games and end this road trip with a win. In the end, though, the Lynx survived, beat the Liberty 86-80. Sandy Brondello's message with the Liberty ahead of their Saturday matinee was short and to the point. 'Be better than what we've shown in these last games,' Brondello said. Advertisement 4 Sabrina Ionescu of the New York Liberty drives to the basket during the game against the Minnesota Lynx on August 16, 2025 at Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. NBAE via Getty Images The Liberty haven't consistently executed at the level they need to if they want to win another title. Then again, they also haven't been entirely at full strength since the beginning of the season. They're without Breanna Stewart (bone bruise), Nyara Sabally (nagging knee issue) and Isabelle Harrison (concussion protocol). While the Liberty can't control who's on the floor on any given night, they can control how well they lock in to the attention of details and if they go away from playing their style. 'When we lose, we lack discipline in the areas that are just basic needs in basketball, like take care of the ball, blocking out, not giving up those [rebounds],' Brondello said. 4 Jonquel Jones of the New York Liberty rebounds the ball during the game against the Minnesota Lynx on August 16, 2025 at Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. NBAE via Getty Images Saturday was a different story. Advertisement It was a total team effort by the Liberty, who played one of their most complete games of the season. It arguably was the best the team has looked since it lost Stewart to injury on July 26. New York matched Minnesota's physicality and played the way the defending champions should. Even with the Liberty fouling to stop the clock late, it's hard not to acknowledge the free-throw discrepancy. The Lynx attempted 33 free throws to Liberty's eight. 4 New York Liberty forward Leonie Fiebich (13) controls the ball as Minnesota Lynx guard Courtney Williams (10) defends during the first quarter at Target Center. Matt Krohn-Imagn Images Advertisement But even when the calls weren't going the Liberty's way, they didn't allow it to impact their focus. New York trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half but trimmed the Lynx's lead to five by halftime. The Liberty jumped out to a 6-0 start in the third quarter to capture their first lead of the game. Advertisement The Liberty led 61-60 heading into the fourth quarter. But in the end, the Lynx won. The Liberty head back to Brooklyn, where they'll host the Lynx on Tuesday.
