ESPN names their biggest 'what-ifs' for Georgia football in 2025
What are ESPN's biggest questions about Georgia entering the 2025 season?
Gunner Stockton's Performance
Head coach Kirby Smart brought Gunner Stockton to SEC media days and to the surprise of the college football world. Stockton started one game last year and much of the media still projects that there will be a quarterback battle in Athens, but it appears Stockton has a leg up in the competition over Ryan Puglisi.
In Stockton's first start he performed well himself unfortunately he took four sacks, including a game-turning strip sack against Notre Dame, but that was one of the toughest situations possible for a quarterback. Stockton's receivers were dropping and offensive line play was nonexistent during most of the game against an elite Notre Dame defensive. Stockton has an entire offseason to prep to prove himself as a reliable starter to play complementary football.
Wide Receiver Corps Improving
Last year, the wide receiver group had drop issues and finished with 36 drops (most in the nation). There were times when the group could not create separation from the opposing secondary.
This season, the veteran group consists of Dillon Bell, London Humphreys and Colbie Young, and Texas A&M transfer Noah Thomas is a potential big-play target. The media is high on Zachariah Branch, a former USC star, that caught the attention of the college world as a freshman return man in 2023. However, he only had 823 receiving yards and three scores in two seasons. He needs to find a way to increase his production to match his talent level. Expect freshmen Tayln Taylor and CJ Wiley to get some playing time as well.
The eyes will be on this group if they can improve and be difference makers for first-year starter quarterback Gunner Stockton.
Can the trenches on both sides improve?
Kirby Smart is going to put out a smart and absurdly physical defense. A lack of disruption up front, the defense ranked ninth last season, their worst showing since 2017. And now, of the 11 players in the front seven who saw at least 200 snaps last season, eight are gone. There will be a lot of eyes on defensive lineman Christen Miller, who is looked at as a leader, and now No. 1 DL Elijah Griffin had a fantastic spring and is being compared to Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl champion Jalen Carter.
Meanwhile, the offensive line faces a major challenge after losing four starters, including two All-American guards. Four players with previous starting experience are back and the unit is stocked with former four- and five-star recruits, replacing that much production and experience will be difficult. This is especially notable given that both the offensive and defensive fronts were not as dominant last season as they have been in the past.

Ex-star WR compares Pat Surtain to Darrelle Revis: 'As consistent as it gets'
When Darrelle Revis was in his heyday from the late 2000s until the early 2010s, he struck fear into quarterbacks, wide receivers, and offensive coordinators alike. He was so effective that he was revered as 'Revis Island,' where wide receivers matched up with him were in no man's land with his coverage. So when Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II was recently compared to him, it was a worthy recognition. Former Atlanta Falcon star wide receiver and All-Pro WR Roddy White made the comparison in an interview with Dylan Wilkerson of Vegas Insider, noting that Surtain plays similarly to the former Jets star. "Patrick Surtain II from the Denver Broncos," White said when asked what modern-day corner he'd like to face one-on-one. "He's the guy. I've watched him a lot. He does everything well, and he travels with the other team's best guy. He reminds me of Darrelle Revis, but just a little taller. "He competes. He likes the challenge of going against the best receivers in the league and he'd be the guy I'd look forward to facing if I was still in the league. In a position where it's so hard to be consistent, he is as consistent as it gets.' While the comparison is suitable, Surtain does have one edge over Revis: Defensive Player of the Year. Although he was a seven-time Pro Bowler, four-time Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl champion, Revis never won DPOY as PS2 did in 2024. Surtain is still seeking a Super Bowl ring of his own, but it's clear that he's the best cornerback in the NFL today. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Sam Acho to join Cardinals' preseason TV broadcasts as analyst
The Cardinals bring back a former player to help call preseason games. The Arizona Cardinals have announced another addition to their broadcast team, although it is only for the preseason. They announced Wednesday that Sam Acho would be the analyst for the TV broadcast of the team's three preseason games. This comes on the heels of the announcement that former Cardinals offensive lineman A.Q. Shipley would be the team's new radio analyst for game broadcasts. Ron Wolfley was previously the radio analyst and, for preseason games, the analyst for the team's television broadcasts, but he stepped down after 20 years, wishing to have more time with his family on weekends. Acho was a fourth-round pick of the Cardinals out of Texas in 2011 and played nine years in the league, the first four with the Cardinals. He is also an ESPN analyst, focusing mostly on college football. The Cardinals will broadcast all three of their preseason games on television on CBS-5. Dave Pasch, the team's radio play-by-play announcer, will call play-by-play for the first two preseason games on television with Acho. Dani Sureck will be the sideline reporter for the TV broadcasts. Pasch, who also is a college football announcer for ESPN, will not be available for the Aug. 23 preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders, so Paul Calvisi, normally the sideline reporter for the radio broadcast team, will call play-by-play with Acho as the analyst. While Pasch is working the TV broadcast, Calvisi will call play-by-play on the radio for the first two preseason games with Shipley. Craig Grialou will replace Calvisi on the radio for the game against the Raiders. 2025 Cardinals preseason schedule The Cardinals-Broncos and Raiders-Cardinals preseason games will also air on NFL Network. Shannon Sharpe opens up about ESPN firing — and why he wanted news to wait even longer
Shannon Sharpe is speaking out after his reported firing by ESPN on Wednesday, saying he's 'at peace' with the axing. After The Athletic's Andrew Marchand broke the news earlier in the day, the Pro Football Hall of Famer addressed the news on his 'Nightcap' podcast. Sharpe said he had known that he was officially done at ESPN for a little bit, but he was hoping the news wouldn't be made public until his brother, Sterling Sharpe, was officially inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this weekend. That, however, did not happen. 'I found out this information a little earlier in the week, and really the only thing that I really asked is, 'Guys, could we wait until Monday? My brother's going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, I really want it to be about him and I want it to be about my family,' Sharpe said. 'I said, 'This coming out will overshadow everything he's worked his entire life for.' And, unfortunately, it didn't happen that way.' Sharpe said he 'profusely' apologized to his brother about it. The former Super Bowl champion wideout is done at the network after he settled a $50 million lawsuit where he was accused of rape. Sharpe had been named in a civil lawsuit filed in Nevada state court this spring that alleged he committed assault, sexual assault, sexual battery and battery. Shannon Sharpe addressed his ESPN firing. He denied 'all allegations of coercion or misconduct,' through his legal team, and he stepped away from his duties at ESPN in April. 'I really enjoyed my time at ESPN, they gave me an opportunity to bring my audience that saw me really just grow,' Sharpe said on his podcast. 'They did what they felt they needed to do, I'm at peace with that. I just wish this thing could've waited until Monday because I hate the fact that I am overshadowing my brother. First two brothers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and this is what the headline is going to be for the next couple of days.' Sharpe then used his podcast platform to apologize directly to his brother one more time.
