The Spectator wins defamation claim brought by Muslim activist who criticised Hindus
: The Spectator magazine and Douglas Murray have won a defamation case brought by a Muslim online influencer who stirred up trouble during the 2022 Leicester riots.

Mohammed Hijab, a YouTuber with 1.3 million followers, whose real name is Mohammed Hegab, claimed that an article in the Spectator about the riots, titled 'Leicester and the downside with diversity' and published in Sept 2022, defamed him.
The author, Murray, wrote Hijab was a 'a street agitator' who 'cropped up in Leicester to whip up his followers'. He wrote: 'Among other things he (Hijab) told them that Hindus are ridiculous people, not least because of their belief in reincarnation.'
Hijab sued for defamation claiming he lost thousands of pounds in fees as a result of the article.
But in a judgment handed down on Tuesday in the high court, Justice Johnson found that what Murray wrote about Hijab is 'substantially true, and it is not materially inaccurate'.
Hijab's claim was that his comments were not about Hindus but 'the Hindutva' in Leicester which, Hijab, claimed 'promotes conspiracy theories, including that Muslim men conspire to convert Hindu women to Islam'.
Johnson wrote: 'When asked to name anyone in the world who subscribed to the Hindutva ideology but who was not Hindu [Hijab] was able to give only one name: Benjamin Netanyahu.'
He also said Hijab 'lied on significant issues, with the consequence that his evidence, overall, is worthless'.
Johnson pointed out a video of Hijab's speech in Leicester shows him, 'far more vividly than is conveyed by the words of the article, directly whipping up a large group of masked men and ridiculing Hinduism'.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar recently took a ride on a gearless scooter during an inspection of the newly built loop at the Hebbal flyover in Bengaluru. He first rode the scooter alone and later with a pillion rider, catching the attention of locals and the media alike. However, what seemed like a casual ride soon turned controversial. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday slammed US President Donald Trump for imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, calling it "bullying by the buffoon-in-chief." Mr Owaisi also said the tariff, which raises the total to 50 per cent, will harm Indian exporters, small businesses and jobs. In a post on X, Asaduddin Owaisi wrote, "Trump just slapped another 25% tariff on India, taking it to 50%, because we bought oil from Russia. This isn't diplomacy, it's bullying by the buffoon-in-chief who clearly doesn't understand how global trade works." He also questioned why Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders remain silent on the issue. Mr Owaisi accused the government of giving up India's strategic independence to benefit wealthy friends. "These tariffs will hurt Indian exporters, MSMEs, and manufacturers. On August 6, US President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India. According to the order issued by the White House, Trump cited matters of national security and foreign policy concerns, as well as other relevant trade laws, for the increase, claiming that India's imports of Russian oil, directly or indirectly, pose an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to the United States. After the order, the total tariff on Indian goods will be 50 per cent. While the initial duty becomes effective on August 7, the additional levy will come into effect after 21 days and will be imposed on all Indian goods imported into the US, except for goods already in transit or those meeting specific exemptions.
