Why the UAE is the place to look for answers to extreme weather

If people harboured any lingering doubts about the threat climate change poses to the Middle East, two events this week should be more than enough to dispel them. In Iraq, an enormous sandstorm struck the country's southern and central regions leading to darkened cities shrouded in a dusty orange haze, as airports were forced to shut down and more than 1,800 people with respiratory problems were taken to hospital. Although sandstorms are a natural part of the region's environment, their frequency and intensity are rising, fuelled by global warming and increasing desertification. Across the Arabian Gulf, the focus was on a different kind of extreme weather. In Dubai, many residents were thinking about the day, one year ago, when 100mm of rain fell in 12 hours. This is the amount Dubai typically receives in a year and was the heaviest rainfall since records began in 1949. Scientists have suggested that downpours in the region have become 10 to 40 per cent heavier owing to climate change. While it is one country among many that will inevitably be impacted by climate change, the UAE – with its demonstrable history of working hard on crisis management – is a good place to look for solutions, too. As rainwater submerged cars and flooded roads for some hours, the authorities reacted nimbly by reviving strategies that proved their worth during the Covid-19 pandemic. Distance learning in Dubai and neighbouring Sharjah was swiftly introduced, government employees were told to work remotely and private sector companies were urged to let staff work from home. Since then, longer-term solutions have been taking shape. Two months after the floods, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, approved a Dh30 billion ($8.16 billion) project called Tasreef; this is aimed at increasing the capacity of the emirate's rainwater drainage system by 700 per cent. Infrastructure development has been accompanied by other long-term strategies that draw on the UAE's growing expertise in advanced technology. G42, an Abu Dhabi technology group, has worked with global chip maker Nvidia to build a prediction system that is said to increase forecasting times from seven to 14 days. Artificial intelligence is another vital part of adapting to a changing climate as AI can simulate flood events, test urban planning scenarios and process data for faster and more effective decisions. Such know-how will be essential in the future. 'Even if we reduce greenhouse-gas emissions today to zero, we would still be having the climate change we're having today,' Prof Matthew Collins of the UK's University of Exeter told The National last October. More extreme weather – be it flooding or sandstorms – is coming whether we like it or not. This will spur changes across many aspects of life, from urban planning and agriculture to transport and emergency response. Having learnt the lessons about responding to extreme weather events, the UAE is in a strong position to inform the global conversation as we move into a challenging future.

NVIDIA has certified the design of Khazna's next-generation facilities to support the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture. Khazna's ongoing and upcoming infrastructure developments will feature NVIDIA-ready blueprints as standard, ensuring full compatibility with the latest GPU-accelerated workloads. The Abu Dhabi-based Khazna, majority-owned by G42 with MGX and Silver Lake as new minority shareholders, is a global leader in hyperscale digital infrastructure. Hassan Alnaqbi, CEO of Khazna Data Centres, commented: 'The world is entering a new era of AI-driven innovation, and the UAE is uniquely positioned to lead. Our work with NVIDIA represents a bold step forward in delivering high-performance, future-ready infrastructure at an unprecedented scale. It reinforces our support for the UAE's ambitions to become a global AI leader.' Khazna will design the majority of its future data halls with capacities of up to 50 MW, developing individual AI clusters of up to 250 MW. With many of these data halls situated in the planned UAE-US AI campus, this will place the UAE among the world's most advanced AI infrastructure hubs. Khazna is also expanding rapidly across the Middle East, Africa and Europe, with plans to scale up to 1 GW of capacity in countries such as France, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Türkiye, and Kenya.

The company revealed that the integration expands CrowdStrike's protection for Enterprise AI Factories. With NVIDIA's support, customers can now securely run and scale various LLM applications across hybrid and multi-cloud environments from day one. According to CrowdStrike, the Falcon® platform now secures every stage of AI innovation, from build and runtime to posture management. Daniel Bernard, Chief Business Officer at CrowdStrike, stated that the company is defining how AI is secured across the software development lifecycle. He noted that this collaboration with NVIDIA brings CrowdStrike's cybersecurity leadership to cloud-based AI environments. Justin Boitano, Vice President of Enterprise AI Software at NVIDIA, added that security must match AI's growing scale and speed. He said NVIDIA and CrowdStrike are helping enterprises protect AI workloads from development to deployment. Enterprises can now rely on the NVIDIA Enterprise AI Factory combined with CrowdStrike security. This includes the tools to build, deploy, and run AI and LLM applications efficiently and securely. The NVIDIA LLM NIM microservice container was reported to simplify the shift from development to production. It packages open and specialized LLMs as microservices, enabling high-performance inference across hybrid and multi-cloud environments. This includes systems with AI sovereignty needs. CrowdStrike reported that as LLMs enter production, AI risks increase. These risks include data poisoning, tampering, and sensitive data leakage. The Falcon platform now integrates with NVIDIA NIM to deliver end-to-end protection. It monitors runtime behavior and provides AI-driven detection and response. These are trained on trillions of daily security events and frontline intelligence. In addition, CrowdStrike Falcon Cloud Security offers pre-deployment protection through several capabilities: AI-SPM and AI Model Scanning Shadow AI detection These tools identify risks before models are live and deliver threat intelligence. This intelligence integrates with NVIDIA's NeMo Safety workflows, enhancing the security of foundation models. Furthermore, services like CrowdStrike AI Red Team and Falcon® Adversary OverWatch are available to help secure every stage of AI development and deployment.
