Saints hire LeCharles Bentley as a consultant on personnel and player performance
The Saints have announced that they're hiring Bentley as a consultant on personnel and performance, which basically means he'll be around the facility and helping out in any way he can.
'I've spent a lot of time watching film, so I've kind of hit multiple areas. I've spent time in the weight room, I've spent time on the field, I've spent time upstairs being able to assess and evaluate players and I also sit in meetings,' Bentley told the Saints' website. 'I'm touching multiple places and for me, I really enjoy that because it's a challenge. But it also aligns with my personal skill sets. I don't want to get into coaching, or have aspirations of being a coach. But I enjoy being able to serve the game and also be able to do so at a much higher level.'
Saints head coach Kellen Moore said Bentley's presence will be valuable to the coaching staff, but Bentley made clear that coaching is not his calling.
'I teach and I look at the game through a different set of glasses than probably coaches do,' Bentley said. 'That's an advantage, but it's also a disadvantage. So if I were in a coach's chair, the way that I view the game, my own personal aspirations, it would create some blind spots for me as a coach. Coaches are unique creatures, and I'm just not wired at this stage of my life for that.'
Bentley's playing career ended badly: When he left the Saints he signed with the Browns, suffered a serious knee injury on the first play of the Browns' first 11-on-11 training camp session, suffered a staph infection after surgery for that knee injury, and never played football again. But he has remained involved in the game, and has now found another way to contribute.

Best bet: Over 10.5 Wins (+115 at FanDuel) -- 1 unit Best Green Bay Packers 2025 Win Total Bet There's no denying that Green Bay has the edge in this division in terms of continuity from last year. The Packers are the only team in this division that kept its head coach (Matt LaFleur), quarterback (Jordan Love) and coordinators (OC Adam Stenavich and DC Jeff Hafley). QB Jordan Love didn't quite have the season that was expected from him last year following a remarkable finish in 2023, but still managed to lead Green Bay to an 11-6 record. Love missed two games with injuries a year ago, and assuming he's healthy, he could be poised for a huge campaign in just his third full season as the starter. The Packers return star RB Josh Jacobs, a young, deep group of wide receivers and four of five starting O-linemen from 2024, with former 49ers guard Aaron Banks joining the squad in free agency after starting center Josh Myers joined the Jets. Add it all up, and Green Bay to go over 9.5 wins feels like one of the safest over/under win total bets on the board right now. The Vikes run a QB-friendly offense under head coach Kevin O'Connell, and Justin Jefferson is a phenomenal talent at WR, so as long as McCarthy is solid, Minnesota will have a good chance to return to the playoffs. How McCarthy fares will likely depend on the Vikes' O-line, which struggled down the stretch last year, to put it lightly. With new faces at center (veteran former Colt Ryan Kelly), left guard (rookie first-rounder Donovan Jackson) and right guard (27-year-old Will Fries), there's a chance Minnesota will be much-improved at arguably its biggest weakness last year. Defensively, at the risk of oversimplifying things, I'm going to assume any D led by Brian Flores is going to create a ton of problems for opposing offenses. The Vikes gave up less than 20 points per game in 2024, and they led the league in interceptions, with 24, as 11 players all finished with at least one pick. Given uncertainty around McCarthy and this offense, I recommend playing it safe and taking Minnesota to go over 8.5 wins, even at the costly price of -145. Best bet: (Alt) Over 8.5 Wins (-145 at FD) -- 1 unit Best Chicago Bears 2025 Win Total Bet Speaking of wild cards, one of the darlings of the 2024 offseason is one of the toughest teams in the league to figure out right now. Caleb Williams' highly anticipated rookie season didn't go according to plan, and his struggles triggered an offseason overhaul of the offense. Johnson is expected to maximize Williams' talent, but will that happen in their first year together? That might be the biggest question in this division. A big reason Williams struggled as a rookie was poor pass protection, which led to an absurd 68 (!) sacks of the former USC Trojans star. Like Minnesota, Chicago brings back its tackles (Braxton Jones and Darnell Wright), but it has a new trio on the interior. This offseason, the Bears traded for guard Joe Thuney, signed free agent center Drew Dalman and also acquired guard Jonah Jackson. All three are expected to represent substantial upgrades, especially Thuney, who was first-team All-Pro in 2023 and 2024. The defense should be solid under former Raiders and Saints head coach Dennis Allen. This unit brings back its top players in the secondary in corner Jaylon Johnson, nickel Kyler Gordon and veteran safety Kevin Byard, and top linebackers Tremaine Edmunds and TJ Edwards also return. The D-line should be improved, especially if nose tackle Andrew Billings can return to the level he reached before suffering a season-ending injury last November. Former Colts pass rusher Dayo Odeyingbo and Montez Sweat could form a quality 1-2 punch on the edge. Still, against one of the toughest schedules in the league, I think the Bears will improve on last year's 5-12 finish but fall short of nine wins, so let's go with Under 8.5 wins for a team that hasn't finished above .500 since 2018. Pete Carroll and Geno Smith had very different responses regarding their return to Seattle
It may just be a preseason game for the Raiders on Thursday, but for a few Raiders coaches and players it means a bit more. Notably by Pete Carroll, Geno Smith, and Jamal Adams. Carroll coached in Seattle for 14 years and won a Super Bowl there. Geno Smith spent the past six years in Seattle under Carroll, seeing the best years of his career. Adams spent four years there, including a Pro Bowl season. So, yeah, heading back to the place all three spent the majority of their NFL careers is notable. For Carroll and Adams, a full NFL season has passed since they last represented the Seahawks. But for Geno it's the last time he set foot on an NFL field. So, it's very fresh in his mind. 'Man, looking forward to it," Geno said of heading to Seattle Thursday. "Looking forward to seeing my old teammates, old coaches, people in the building. It will be fun. Also going back with Pete, that's pretty cool. Another opportunity to compete with my guys, that's what it's all about.' 'It means everything. It means a lot to me. It was a place I called home for six years. I had a son there and I was able to really just turn my career around. Met some really cool people, got to know a lot of great people there. A lot of great teammates over the years. Just really special things, special thoughts when I think about it.' While Geno gushed about how special this game was for him, Carroll took a different approach. He just downplayed it like it was a regular preseason game. 'It's the only game we got and it happens to be in Seattle," said Carroll. "I love my time in Seattle and love the fans and the people that we met and dealt with, but it's a game for us and we're gonna play ball.' Seahawks head coach Mike McDonald said he hopes the Seattle fans greet the return of Pete Carroll and Geno the game starts. "We should be cheering Pete when he gets here," said McDonald. "We should be cheering Geno. How could you not? We should be cheering those guys. Now, when the ball is snapped, we're going to go try to win the game, and we're not going to be playing our starters, but we're going to go compete like heck. I think Pete would appreciate that. I hope Pete gets a great ovation. He deserves it." Interesting that McDonald added the Seahawks won't be playing the starters, because Carroll suggested today he will not be sitting the Raiders starters. Shaun Alexander: Sam Darnold a good risk for Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks have undergone plenty of high-profile changes since the calendar turned to 2024. Mike Macdonald was hired as the franchise's ninth head coach last January. This year, Seattle traded Geno Smith, signed Sam Darnold to a contract worth over $100 million, traded DK Metcalf and signed Cooper Kupp to play in his native state. Will the changes result in tangible improvement? The Seahawks haven't clinched a playoff berth since 2022 and haven't won a postseason game since the 2019 season, but former Seahawks great Shaun Alexander believes the team is on the cusp of something special. 'Coach McDonald, his style, his personality, I think the way he's doing it is going to be very beneficial for us. The Seahawk family is in a good place to go on a great run,' Alexander said to USA TODAY Sports on behalf of USAA's Salute to Service Bootcamp. 'Last year, we were the only team with 10 wins and not make the playoffs.' The Seahawks were a part of the quarterback carousel this offseason when they sent Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders and signed Darnold during free agency. Darnold is coming off an impressive 2024 campaign with the Minnesota Vikings in which he recorded career-highs in most major quarterback statistical categories. He became the first QB in NFL history to record 14 wins in his first season with a team and his performance earned him his first ever Pro Bowl nod. But Darnold's been a journeyman quarterback for a majority of his career. Seattle's his fifth team in eight seasons. The big question is whether Darnold's lone Pro Bowl year in Minnesota was an anomaly or a sign of things to come? Seattle signed the 28-year-old quarterback to a three-year contract. However, the structure of the deal enables the Seahawks to cut Darnold after just one season and the club drafted an insurance plan in the third-round of the 2025 draft in Alabama product Jalen Milroe. 'I'm one of those people like, is the risk? Yes, but is it a good risk? Yes. One hand, I love Geno I thought he was very good for our team… Here we are with Sam, I think he's gonna be a good quarterback,' Alexander explained. 'Sam is a fine NFL quarterback that if put in the right situation, he can look really good.' Alexander is the Seahawks' all-time leading rusher. Suitably, he thinks Darnold is in a good offensive situation because of the current Seattle running back, Kenneth Walker, who could be motivated because he's on an expiring contract. I think a healthy him gives us a shot in every game. He could look like he just passively is going to put up 100 yards and score a touchdown,' Alexander said. It's one of the more fascinating questions entering the season. Although, akin to all quarterbacks, the answer is largely dependent upon his surrounding parts.
