‘The Last Of Us' Renewed For Season 3 At HBO Ahead Of Season 2 Premiere
HBO has picked up The Last of Us for a third season.
The announcement comes ahead of the anticipated Season 2 debut on April 13. Deadline understands that a decision has not been made yet whether Season 3 will be the series' last.

Creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin previously told Deadline that they were contemplating up to four total seasons to tell the story laid out across two video games. Season 2 is seven episodes, and the duo sought early on to quell any worry from fans that they would try to wrap up the behemoth that is The Last of Us Part II in such little time.
'It can't be overemphasized how proud HBO is for the outstanding achievement we believe the second season of The Last of Us is,' Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said in a statement. 'Craig, Neil, Carolyn and the entire executive producer team, cast and crew have delivered a masterful follow-up and we're thrilled to carry the power of Craig and Neil's storytelling into what we know will be an equally moving and extraordinary third season.'
The early renewal is a show of faith for the acclaimed series, though not entirely unexpected, given that the first season performed so well for the network. By the time the Season 1 finale aired, HBO said the season's average audience had surpassed 30M viewers, with the premiere well on its way to 40M. That's after the premiere episode brought in a same-day audience of 4.7M, which at the time was the largest debut after House of the Dragon since Boardwalk Empire launched in 2010. HBO also recently renewed hit The White Lotus for Season 4 ahead of its Season 3 premiere.

Based on Naughty Dog's award-winning video game, The Last of Us takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.
Season 2 picks up five years after the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.
In addition to Pascal and Ramsey, returning cast includes Gabriel Luna and Rutina Wesley. Joining Season 2 are Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Young Mazino, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, Spencer Lord, Danny Ramirez and Jeffrey Wright. Catherine O'Hara also guest stars.
The Last of Us is written and executive produced by Mazin and Druckmann. The series is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television and is also executive produced by Carolyn Strauss, Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O'Connor, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Evan Wells; with writer/co-executive producer Halley Gross. PlayStation Productions, Word Games, Mighty Mint, and Naughty Dog produce.

The audience gets a close-up view of Snook on a large, rectangular screen that hangs from the top of the stage as cameras follow her rushing around the stage, de-wigging and re-wigging, and interacting with prerecorded versions of herself. 'It's about concealing and revealing, putting on masks, taking off masks,' Snook, who made her Broadway debut in the show, told The New York Times this spring. 'It's about having your soul be seen.' Snook originally performed the show last year in London's West End, where she won the Olivier Award and where critics praised the production's clever camerawork and Snook's chameleonic, playful embodiment of the various characters. A year after NCIS: Hawai'i ended its three-season run on CBS, the state's film and TV industry continues to suffer a decline in business. Jason Antoon, who played cyber intelligence specialist Ernie Malik on the police procedural spin-off, recently shared a video of the series' vacant and overgrown Hollywood Film Studio, where shows like Lost (2004-'10), Hawaii Five-0 (2010-'20) and Magnum P.I. (2018-'24) also filmed. Although CEO Rob Wade said the reason for the decision 'certainly wasn't the locale or the budget,' filming in Hawaii made it one of the network's more expensive dramas, coming in at close to $4 million per episode. Meanwhile, Hawaii was passed over as the locale for the next 9-1-1 spin-off, which is instead filming in Nashville, starring Chris O'Donnell and premiering this fall on ABC. On Friday, Gov. Josh Green, M.D. released an intent-to-veto list, which includes HB796, a bill that would sunset tax credits after five years. 'This bill would have a significant long-term impact on income tax credits across a variety of industries, including film and television, research, and renewable energy,' said Gov. Green of the veto. 'These tax credits are critical to supporting economic development and diversification, particularly within growing and emerging sectors. Categorically sunsetting income tax credits will not only disincentivize future investors from doing business in Hawai'i, but will destabilize existing businesses that currently rely upon these tax credits.
