IMD raises rain forecast to 106%

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reiterated that the 2025 monsoon season will get above normal rainfall revising upward its rainfall forecast for the four-month monsoon season to 106% from the earlier 105% issued last month.Though the monsoon entered mainland India a week earlier on May 24, the IMD will measure rainfall received only during June to September as monsoon rainfall. "The southwest monsoon seasonal rainfall over the country as a whole is likely to be 106% of the Long Period Average (LPA) rainfall," said M Ravichandran, secretary, earth sciences ministry, at a press conference on Tuesday. The rainfall is expected to be in the range of 102% to 110% due to +/- 4% model error.The monsoon onset over Kerala happened a week earlier on May 24 against the normal date of June 1. The heavy rainfall wreaked havoc in cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru, delayed the kharif sowings and damaged the standing crop in many states.IMD expects the rainfall to remain above normal (> 106%) in south and central India, normal in northwest India (92-108%) and below normal in northeast India ( < 94%). The core monsoon zone, consisting of parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal, which has rainfed agriculture, is also expected to have above normal rainfall.The IMD has also issued a forecast for the month of June saying the average rainfall for the country during June is most likely to be above normal (>108%). Many global scale and regional factors were favourable for the rapid progress of the monsoon, including formation of a low-pressure area in the Arabian Sea. "Now, a low-pressure area has formed in the Bay of Bengal, which will invigorate the monsoon over Bay of Bengal," said Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General Meteorology, IMD."Above-normal rainfall carries benefits for agriculture and water resources but also introduces risks such as flooding, disruptions to transportation, public health concerns, and harm to ecosystems," warned IMD.Many meteorologists expect a hiatus in the progress of the monsoon in June and IMD said it expects some slowdown in the monsoon's progress. Stage-I GRAP measures enforced in NCR as Delhi AQI plunges to 'poor'
New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): In view of rising pollution levels, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has enforced Stage-I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR with immediate effect. The action came after Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 209, which falls under the 'Poor' category. The decision was a comprehensive review by the CAQM Sub-Committee, which convened on Saturday and reviewed the air quality scenario in the region, as well as the IMD/IITM forecasts and air quality index of Delhi comprehensively. 'The AQI of Delhi has shown an increasing trend and has been recorded at 209 for 07.06.2025. Further, the forecast by IMD/IITM also predicts AQI to mainly remain in 'Poor' category in coming days,' said the statement from CAQM 'The Sub-Committee, accordingly, decides to invoke all actions under Stage-I ('Poor' Air Quality) of the extant GRAP in the entire NCR, with immediate effect,' it added. On May 18 following the subsequent decrease in the air pollution levels, the CAQM revoked the Stage-I measures of the Graded Response Action Plan across the entire NCR. An AQI rating is categorised as follows: 0-50 (good), 51-100 (satisfactory), 101-200 (moderate), 201-300 (poor), 301-400 (very poor), and 401-500 (severe). (ANI)

Thunderstorms & gale likely over coastal AP till June 10: IMD
1 2 Visakhapatnam: The maximum temperatures across the state are rising again due to lack of rainfall over the past few days. The monsoon that has been stalled for the last one-week, is likely to revive from June 11, in Andhra Pradesh, and some parts of the state may witness rainfall activity. Parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh (CAP) and Rayalaseema regions have reported 2-2.5°C higher than normal temperatures on Saturday. Few parts of the north coastal AP experienced thunderstorms on Saturday evening, bringing some relief to the denizens from the hot and humid weather conditions. Between Friday morning and Saturday morning, Palasa in Srikakulam district recorded six centimetre of rainfall. This was followed by Anakapalle (five centimetre), Mandasa, Therlam, Garividi and Nagari (three centimetre each). Few parts of north AP recorded rainfall between one and two centimetre during the period. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated on Saturday that thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty winds are likely at isolated places over north coastal AP, Yanam, south coastal AP and Rayalaseema regions till June 10. The weathermen informed that isolated parts of the NCAP, SCAP and Rayalaseema will experience heavy rainfall on June 11 and heavy rainfall is likely over isolated places over SCAP and Rayalaseema on June 12 and 13. As per the IMD, Kavali in Nellore district was the hottest in the state on Saturday (June 7) with 41.1°C followed by Gannavaram (41°C), Nellore (40.8°C), Amaravati (40.7°C), Bapatla (40.5°C), Ongole (40.3°C) and Nandigama (39.8°C).

Delhi's air quality turns poor, anti-pollution curbs under GRAP-1 imposed
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Saturday ordered implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan - Stage I (GRAP-I) in Delhi-National Capital Region and adjoining areas with immediate effect as the air quality turned "poor".After a meeting of the sub-committee on GRAP held on Saturday, the curbs were ordered after reviewing the air quality scenario as well as the weather forecasts alongwith the Air Quality Index of AQI of Delhi has shown an increasing trend and has been recorded at 209 for June 7, 2025.
