Zepto Tweaks App Interface to Address 'Dark Pattern' Concerns; Details Here

News183 days ago
Dark patterns have been a regulatory focus since the government, in November 2023, formally defined 13 manipulative tactics as unfair trade practices.
Quick commerce platform Zepto has rolled out design changes to its app after certain features were criticised by customers as 'dark patterns', deceptive interface tactics that can push users into making unintended purchases. This makes Zepto the first major e-commerce company in India to implement such changes under heightened regulatory scrutiny.
One of the biggest updates is to its free-delivery benefit. Previously, users had to manually opt in, a step that drew complaints for being cumbersome and opaque. Now, the feature is applied automatically, similar to practices on rival platforms such as Blinkit, according to a Moneycontrol report.
The checkout process has also been overhauled. All charges — including delivery fees, handling charges and surcharges — are now displayed on the cart page, rather than appearing only at the payment step.
The moves come after the consumer affairs ministry earlier this year warned several firms, including Zepto, Uber and Ola, to remove manipulative design elements or risk action. While Zepto has maintained its app did not employ dark patterns, users have previously highlighted issues such as hidden coupons for paid subscribers and unexpected add-on fees like 'small cart" or 'rain" charges.
Dark patterns have been a regulatory focus since the government, in November 2023, formally defined 13 manipulative tactics — from false urgency and basket sneaking to confirm shaming and drip pricing — as unfair trade practices. The crackdown intensified in 2025, with the ministry holding a review meeting with top e-commerce executives in May and directing regular audits, prompt fixes, and participation in a new industry–government committee for standardised enforcement.
The Central Consumer Protection Authority has issued multiple advisories, and an August 2024 report by the Advertising Standards Council of India found that 52 of the 53 most-downloaded Indian apps used at least one manipulative design feature.
Zepto's changes come as it raises fresh capital. In recent weeks, it has secured Rs 400 crore from Motilal Oswal Financial Services, Rs 25 crore from MapmyIndia under a strategic partnership, and ₹7.5 crore from Elcid Investments, valuing the company at $5.9 billion. It is also in advanced talks to raise $450-500 million, which could lift its post-money valuation to around $7 billion.

Nexus with contractors? GDA set to transfer 76 supervisors

Ghaziabad: Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) is set to transfer 76 supervisors following persistent complaints of collusion with contractors in facilitating illegal construction. Residents also allege that supervisors, working in tandem with private builders, demand hefty sums to overlook unauthorised floors. GDA has around 200 supervisors in the seven zones under it, but its manual does not specify a maximum tenure for postings before an employee can be shifted. Many of the supervisors on the list have been posted in the same zone for more than five years. Officials admitted that supervisors posted in the same zones for years had formed "unholy alliances" with local realtors, and said the reshuffle aimed to curb the spread of illegal colonies, which have risen from 321 in 2021 to 351, occupying around 3,000 acres. Supervisors are also tasked with checking the quality of construction materials and ensuring that all work is carried out in line with the approved plan. However, their nexus with contractors runs deep. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A Teaspoon Before Bed Burns Body Fat - Fit Into Your Clothes Again! Health & Family Click Here Undo A Vaishali resident told TOI, a contractor allegedly sought Rs 40,000 on behalf of a GDA official to allow his family to construct an additional floor in their two-storey flat. "We hired a private contractor, prepared a cost estimate, and even had construction material delivered," he said. But that evening, a GDA supervisor reached their house and warned the family that the work violated regulations. Unsure how to proceed, the family considered abandoning the plan. "But the contractor assured me it could be 'managed' for Rs 40,000. Construction went ahead without further interference. Only later did I realise the nexus between contractors and supervisors," he added. According to a GDA official, despite checks and balances, illegal construction has been unabated in the city. "We deduced that many of the supervisors are working in the same zone for years and have developed a nexus with contractors, allowing illegal construction. This nexus needs to be broken, for which GDA has prepared a list of 76 supervisors who will be transferred to other zones." DDA allocates land at Nehru Place for 5-star hotel for 55-yr period

New Delhi: Delhi Development Authority's first attempt to offer land for a five-star hotel on an annually incremental licence fee fetched Rs 27.2 crore per annum against the reserve fee of Rs 18 crore. The bid, won by one of the biggest hotel chains in the country, will generate revenues of Rs 10,000 crore for DDA over the licence period of 55 years. The initiative will provide a much-needed boost to the hospitality sector while contributing to DDA's coffers. "It was on the directions of lieutenant governor VK Saxena that DDA decided to move away from the existing freehold and perpetual lease models and chose a 'special licence property' mode to offer lands for prominent projects on annual incremental licence fee," an official said. The official explained that the experience of the last two decades showed that the freehold and perpetual lease models were not achieving desired results due to the high cost of land. "In contrast, the special licence property initiative is a key step towards leveraging DDA's land assets for sustainable, high-value development, contributing to Delhi's emergence as a global destination for business, hospitality, and medical treatment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New German Hearing Device Sweeping Canada (And Under $100) Top Trending News Today Learn More Undo It will also ensure that DDA continues to be the owner of the land," the official said. As a part of this initiative, the first land parcel offered was of around two acres at Nehru Place for a five-star hotel, announced through a request for proposal issued on May 2. The auction was conducted on Aug 13, in which Fleur Hotels Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Lemon Tree Hotels Limited, emerged as the winning bidder. SBI Capital Markets Ltd assisted DDA as the transaction advisor for the auction process. "The company secured this project for an annual licence fee of Rs 27.19 crore. The yearly licence fee will escalate annually and is expected to generate around Rs 10,000 crore as revenues for DDA over the 55-year licence period," said a DDA official. The hotel to be named Aurika Nehru Place is set to become one of the city's biggest with over 500 rooms. It claimed it would offer elegant rooms, suites, signat-ure dining, expansive banqueting and best-in-class leisure facilities.
