‘My heart is bleeding' – Wimbledon champion takes huge swipe at tennis bosses following major rule change

WIMBLEDON champions Sem Verbeek and Katerina Siniakova have slammed changes to the US Open mixed doubles - branding them "a shame".
It was announced in February that the Flushing Meadows event would be undergoing a number of changes to attract more high-profile singles players to compete in doubles.

But they've had to wave goodbye to the US Open

This included mixed doubles happening in the week before the tournament in "fan week" and not at the same time as the singles, meaning it will be spread over three weeks, unlike the three other Grand Slams.
The tournament is also introducing a $1million (£804,000) prize for the mixed doubles champions, in a hope to get bigger names to participate.
However the move hasn't gone down with new Wimbledon mixed double champions Verbeek and Siniakova.
They are amongst the large number of mixed doubles pairs who will miss out on playing together in New York as a result of the changes.
Verbeek, who recorded a 7-6 7-6 win with Siniakova over Britain's Joe Salisbury and Brazil's Luisa Stefani in the final on Thursday, told BBC Sport: 'As two athletes that would love to play it, it's a shame to obviously know that we can't.
'I'm not going to actively root against it for it not to be a success. The positive I can think of is that there's going to be more people that can see the top single stars earlier in the tournament when they are maybe a bit more accessible to the public.
'But as a doubles athlete, my heart is bleeding.'
Australian Open 2025 doubles winner Siniakova has also criticised the decision.
She said: 'It's a shame they decided to do it.

'I think it's a marketing step, but they are taking [away the] chance of doubles players.'
The US Open's mixed doubles competition will run from August 19 to August 20, with nine of the world's top 10 women and nine of the world's top 10 men involved.

Early round matches will be best-of-three sets played to just four games, with a deciding point played at deuce.
Only the final will feature a traditional best-of-three sets played to six games, as is usually the case in a Grand Slam.
Carlos Alcaraz, who is competing in Friday's Wimbledon semi-final against Taylor Fritz, has teamed up with British No1 Emma Raducanu for the event already.
Meanwhile, 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic - who was thanked by Queen consort Camilla at Wimbledon - is partnering up with fellow Serbian Olga Danilovic.

Speaking back in February, CEO of the US Tennis Association, Lew Sherr, said he believed the changes will benefit the US Open.
After the adjustments were announced, he said: "The reason behind this is to appeal to more fans and grow the fanbase around the world.
"But the way to do that is to have the biggest names in the sport participating in doubles, and to showcase them teaming up and playing in a different format, we think is exciting.
"In fact, we know it's exciting."
Other tennis stars have welcomed the restructure, too.
American world singles No3 Jessica Pegula said earlier this year: "As a player who enjoys competing in doubles, I'm excited for the opportunity to play the US Open mixed doubles championship during the first week.
"I appreciate the importance of innovation and exploring new ways to engage more fans and grow our sport."

The three-day event, which takes place in China, will see robots with 280 teams from 16 different countries battle it out over a range of sporting events. Robot-specific games are also set to take place - with contests ranging from sorting medicines to handling materials to cleaning services. But human athletes can rest easy - footage of the games show there are a few defects which need to be ironed out. At one of the first events a five–aside football match, 10 robots the size of seven–year–olds waddled around, frequently knocking each other over. Mind-boggling footage showed the small bots step around the pitch, with one seen slowly knocking one into the back of the net. Over in athletics, one robo-racer barrelled straight into a human operator who was knocked to the ground. Footage also showed one racing humanoid near the finish line on a race - before tripping up at the last moment. Participating robots are representing countries including the United States, Germany, and Brazil, among others. There are 192 universities taking part in the groundbreaking competition. Kicking off in the Chinese capital, the games include a whopping 500 androids. "That's sad but it is better than investing a lot of money into a product which failed." The fastest robot finished in 6:29:37, AFP reported. For comparison, the fastest human record for the same race is 3:26:00. Beijing's city government is one of the big backers of the games - a symbol of how much China are investing into robots and AI. The push comes as the country faces an ageing population and slowing growth. China has been rolling out headline-grabbing robot events, including the world's first humanoid marathon in Beijing earlier this year. The historic competitive race between man and bot saw 21 humanoid robots race alongside 12,000 runners around the 13-mile course. Organisers said the new games provide valuable data collection opportunities for developing robots for practical applications such as factory work. Emma Raducanu reveals how she feels about Carlos Alcaraz dating rumours ahead of hotly anticipated Mixed Doubles pairing - and what she thought of bizarre Cam Norrie romance question
Emma Raducanu has revealed her bemusement at scrutiny into her her dating life, following speculation linking her to Carlos Alcaraz and a bizarre question at Wimbledon. Rumours of a potential romance with Alcaraz had been sparked earlier this summer when the pair had been confirmed as mixed doubles partners in a revamped competition at the US Open, which will begin next week. The British star had then been spotted spotting Alcaraz at Queen's in June, with the grass-court tournament building up towards Wimbledon. Alcaraz's confirmation as an ambassador of Evian, who a long-term partner of Raducanu, led to the British No 1 being asked about the rumours ahead of Wimbledon. Raducanu had attempted to end the speculation by insisting that they were just 'good friends'. Speaking ahead of the US Open, where Raducanu shot to fame by winning the 2021 event as a qualifier, she expressed her surprise at the desire to find out about her dating life. The British star was the subject of romance rumours with Carlos Alcaraz over the summer Rumours had intensified after Raducanu watched Alcaraz at Queen's after their mixed doubles pairing at the US Open had been announced 'I guess I'm like, it comes with the territory, people being so curious,' Raducanu told the Guardian. When broached about the question for the first time, Raducanu reportedly laughed before stating 'That was terrible, terrible'. On the court, Raducanu has shown impressive form in the build-up to the US Open later this month. She reached the semi-finals of the Canadian Open and this week suffered an agonising three set defeat to current women's world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka at the Cincinnati Open. Her recent climb to 33rd in the world rankings could be enough to see Raducanu earn a seeding for the US Open women's singles event. Raducanu, however, is currently due to first feature in the $1million mixed doubles competition alongside Alcaraz. The 22-year-old had previously explained to Daily Mail Sport that her friendship with Alcaraz, a five-time Grand Slam champion, had stemmed from the pair growing up on tour together. 'He's so nice, very happy, amazing values and just a really positive light to be around,' said Raducanu. 'I've known him for years. Wimbledon 2021 was the first time I started getting to know him. He was always playing the day before me, I would see him win and then I would have motivation to win and get myself into that position too. The British No 1 has shown impressive signs ahead of the US Open, where she triumphed in 2021 'It was really cool to go through that tournament together and then I kept going through the US Open, we were staying in touch for the whole time and, yeah, it's nice. 'We have a good relationship still. He's obviously overtaken me a lot, but it's nice that we have that from a while ago. 'I think, for all of us, we really value those connections we had from when we were young. 'When you become a bit more known or more successful, you find yourself reverting back people you knew from a young age because you're like, that's a real genuine connection.
