Matildas captain Steph Catley scores Ballon d'Or nomination
Catley is just the third Australian woman to be nominated for the Ballon d'Or since the women's category was introduced in 2018, following in the footsteps of Kerr and Hayley Raso.
What is the Ballon d'Or? The Ballon d'Or, or Golden Ball, is considered the most prestigious individual prize in world football. First awarded to male players in 1956, the women's award was introduced in 2018 in response to the growing impact of women's football worldwide. Presented annually by France Football magazine, the prize is voted on by a global panel of journalists, national coaches and team captains.
It recognises overall excellence, leadership and contribution to the game over the course of the season.
This year's winners will be announced in Paris on 22 September. Kerr has been nominated five times for the Ballon d'Or, finishing second in 2023 and third in both 2021 and 2022, and Hayley Raso received her first nomination in 2023. Catley, who's been capped 138 times for her country, continues to play a crucial role for both club and country. The decision from the 20-year-old left multiple teammates throwing their arms in the arm and had the commentary crew in disbelief. 'Tallyn Da Silva what are you doing?' Andrew Voss said on Fox League. 'He doesn't use his playmakers and the ball is turned over on the line.' Michael Ennis added: 'He'll get a conversation from Moses when they get back in the sheds. It's one of the lessons you learn as a young dummy half, in those field positions … you find your number 7.' Moses however took things one step further. The skipper was caught on camera giving the youngster an extraordinary spray which appeared to those watching on to be along the lines of: 'Tallyn you f***ing c***.' The incident occurred when a North Queensland official come onto the field as the team attempted to carry the ball out of its own end. On just the first tackle of a new set following a long range bomb by Mitchell Moses, the Cowboys threw the Steeden into a trainer with Eels speedster Josh Addo-Carr lurking near the ball. The drama unfolded after Braidon Burns passed the ball behind Semi Valemei with the ball then rolling on to hit the Cowboys trainer in the leg. Cowboys winger Jaxon Purdue then dived on the loose ball to surrender as Eels players immediately protested with referee Liam Kennedy. It is possible Addo-Carr could have got to the ball first if not for the trainer — and the former Melbourne Storm winger may also have had an opportunity to tackle Purdue in-goal. Voss, speaking on Fox League, immediately called for NRL supremo Peter V'landys to take action. 'Seriously is there any need for a trainer to be out there so early in a set? What are we doing? Peter V'landys you've got work to do,' he said. He went on to say: 'That's unbelievable.' Former Bulldogs captain Michael Ennis jokingly called it 'Trainergate 2.0'. It was ruled a mutual infringement, and the Cowboys regained possession of the ball.
