Caught On Camera: UK Man Releases Rats Outside Sheffield Mosque, Shouts Racist Remarks
Edmund Fowler, 66, released rats outside Sheffield Grand Mosque in a series of hate crimes, causing shock and distress among worshippers.
A UK man was seen releasing caged rats outside a mosque in a premeditated series of hate crimes described by magistrates as 'disgusting" and 'highly dehumanising" in CCTV footage played in court. In the video, Edmund Fowler, 66, was seen lifting a cage from the boot of his car and freeing the animals onto the pavement outside Sheffield Grand Mosque on four separate occasions between May and June.
The video also captured Edmund Fowler shouting racist insults at worshippers entering the mosque on Grimesthorpe Road. In additional mobile phone footage recorded by Edmund Fowler himself, he is heard saying to the rats, 'Guess where you're going," 'Say bye bye," and 'I'll point you in the right direction."
Edmund Fowler pleaded guilty at Sheffield Magistrates' court to four counts of racially aggravated harassment. Despite the shocking footage, he was not sent to prison but received an 18-week prison sentence and was banned from going near any mosque or certain areas of Sheffield for the same duration.
The court heard that Edmund Fowler's actions had caused widespread 'upset and shock" as the manager of Sheffield Grand Mosque said in a statement, 'It is evident people using the mosque are Muslim. They are scared of further harassment and are now too scared to come to the mosque."
Chair of the bench, Suzanne Irish-Deverill, said she was 'disgusted" by the footage, adding, 'Your crimes were pre-planned on multiple occasions. You also had the audacity to record it yourself. It has had significant impact and caused shock and distress. People are entitled to travel to a place of worship without being racially or religiously harassed- it is a hate crime."
The court was told that Edmund Fowler may have suffered a mental breakdown linked to the stress of caring for his wife, who has breast cancer. However, no motive was provided by Edmund Fowler, who acknowledged that his behaviour was 'appalling."
Iman Atta, director of the anti-hate crime charity Tell Mama, called the acts 'highly dehumanising", saying, 'This specific targeting of a mosque and the release of rats in itself is highly dehumanizing. It's not just a targeting of an institution- it's the impact it has on the congregation… a congregation feeling that this is intentional harassment that they're going through on an ongoing basis."

Former NCT Member Taeil Submits Appeal In Court, Asking For Leniency
Taeil and the two other men were sentenced to three years and six months iprisonment for aggravated quasi-rape of a foreign woman in June 2024. Moon Tae-Il, aka Taeil, and two other men were sentenced to three years and six months in prison for aggravated quasi-rape, a serious sexual charge under South Korean law. Following the court's ruling on July 10, the former NCT member has now filed an appeal to reduce his sentence. Previously, the two other defendants also submitted their appeals to the court, seeking to overturn their convictions. On Wednesday, July 16, Taeil submitted his appeal to the Seoul Central District Court's Criminal Division 26, which was presided over by Chief Judge Lee Hyun Kyung. In his appeal, the K-pop idol stated, 'I want to contribute positively to society and will do my best to live a better life." His co-defendants filed their plea for leniency on July 15. The case began in June of last year, when Taeil and the two other non-celebrity men reportedly met the victim at a bar in Seoul's popular nightlife district, Itaewon. After having drinks together, they took the severely intoxicated woman by taxi to one of the defendant's homes and sexually assaulted her while she was unconscious. As per the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, Taeil and his two accomplices were officially charged with aggravated rape under the Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes. The first trial for the case took place on June 18, over a year after the tragic incident occurred. Prosecutors claimed that the crime was pre-planned based on the messages that were obtained from their phones. DNA evidence was also found on the victim's body. The three men pleaded guilty to all the charges. Taeil and his co-defendants were convicted of aggravated quasi-rape on July 10 by a court in Seoul. The former NCT member was taken into custody following the court's ruling. The two other men, identified only by their surnames, Lee and Hong, were also found guilty in the same case and received similar sentences. The court reportedly stated, 'The defendants took advantage of the victim's incapacitated state to commit the crime. The nature of the offence is particularly egregious." They added, 'The victim is believed to have suffered significant psychological trauma as a result." While prosecutors requested a seven-year prison term, the court chose to reduce the sentence, citing the defendants' lack of prior criminal records. The prosecution side also filed an appeal to the court, arguing that their initial statement was too lenient, given the 'nature of the crime." view comments First Published: July 18, 2025, 09:54 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Agency: PTI Last Updated: Raipur, Jul 18 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate on Friday launched fresh raids at the premises of former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel's son Chaitanya Baghel in connection with a money laundering probe against him linked to an alleged liquor scam, officials said. Chaitanya Baghel's house in Bhilai town, which he shares with his father, is being searched by the ED under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) based on receipt of fresh evidence in the case, they said. The federal probe agency conducted similar raids against Chaitanya Baghel in March this year. Bhupesh Baghel, a senior Congress leader, also posted a message on X saying the ED has reached his Bhilai residence on the last day of the assembly session. The ED earlier said Chaitanya Baghel was suspected to be the 'recipient" of the proceeds of crime of the alleged liquor scam. It has said the Chhattisgarh liquor 'scam" resulted in a 'massive loss" to the state exchequer and filled the pockets of the beneficiaries of a liquor syndicate with more than Rs 2,100 crore of proceeds of crime.
