‘The Gilded Age': How The HBO Drama Created A Castle Fit For A New Duchess

Yahoo4 days ago
Gladys deserves the mother of all castles after the ordeal she went through in New York City. But production didn't need to go to England to find the perfect home for the new Duchess of Buckingham.
Two different estates in Newport, R.I. — along with one in Long Island — served as Sidmouth Castle in the episode titled 'A Different World.' To achieve the opening shot, however, director Deborah Kampmeier relied on an actual pond in England to project the image of Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) and Hector (Ben Lamb) riding a carriage through the estate grounds.

'We put the visual effect of the carriage in upside down in the water, and then the wide shot of it moving through the countryside. That's England,' said Kampmeier. 'And then as we approach the castle, that is an approach to an estate in Newport. We brought in background actors to converge upon the carriage, and then a big crane goes up and over. We actually built onto what was already there in our visual effects. That's one piece of the puzzle.'
The entrance and several of the castle rooms featured in the episode are from the Newport estates, while the sitting room and long hallways are from a mansion in Long Island. 'It is a collage that we use to create this epic castle feeling of a castle, using what we had available to us,' the director said. 'We've used up pretty much every mansion in Newport.'
While Gladys is certainly accustomed to living in a large house, her new one has to feel to feel different — and so much worse.
'It was important to feel like she's walking into a very cold, very epic space in which she feels isolated and alone,' said Kampmeier. 'We decided to keep it quite gray, to reflect both a feeling of England since we were not in England and to reflect a feeling of that location as well as the inner life of Gladys … just this gray, isolated, lost girl who's really like a fish out of water.'
Directing for The Gilded Age is 'an extravagant experience,' adds Kampmeier, who also helmed episode 2 and the upcoming episode 6.
'This is a show where it's very luxurious to be able to create a really epic shot that is going to stay in the final cut because the audience is asking for it rather than jumping right to a closeup,' said Kampmeier, whose other credits include Outer Range, Star Trek: Picard, FBI: International and Tales of the Walking Dead. 'I do love it.'

SINNER, WINNER: The 2025 Wimbledon Championships may have ended Sunday, but their impact continues online. According to data from Launchmetrics, the data research and insights company for fashion, luxury and beauty, the tennis tournament had a media impact value of $1.1 billion, a 23 percent increase from last year's championships. More from WWD Tom Sachs' Nike Mars Yard 3.0 Will Require You to Participate in 'Summer Camp' Challenges to Purchase Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella Names Ludivine Pont CEO Why CEO Pay Is Always Moving Higher in Fashion - and Corporate America Ralph Lauren, Wimbledon's official outfitter since 2006, topped the list with the highest media value of all the brands present — $22.5 million — a 20 percent increase year-on-year. The American brand hosted luncheons in its suite and dressed celebrities ranging from Andrew Garfield to Monica Barbaro and Olivia Rodrigo throughout the two weeks of the tournament. Kate Middleton also made the cut. Her attendance at Wimbledon generated $36 million in media impact value. Her custom Self-Portrait dress alone had a media impact value of $918,000, boosting the brand's presence by 17 percent when compared to data from the same period last year. Jannik Sinner, the Italian tennis player who ranks as the world number one, and who won the men's singles title, was also a winner off-court. He generated a total of $9.1 million in media impact value. Some $4.7 million of that came from Rolex after he lifted the Wimbledon trophy wearing the brand's Cosmograph Daytona. Some $4.4 million came from Nike, for which he's been an ambassador since 2019. According to Launchmetrics, Sinner's Instagram post of him holding the Wimbledon trophy was the top-performing placement overall for the tournament. His single post, where he tagged Rolex and Nike, generated $1.4 million in media impact value and has accumulated 1.8 million likes so far. The tennis star is also a Gucci ambassador and throughout the tournament carried his Gucci duffel bag onto the grass court generating $525,000 in media impact value. In another report, from WeArisma, an influencer analytics company, Gucci ranked fourth for earned media value, bringing in $571,300. The Italian brand stayed under the radar with its activations during the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, but in the lead up to the sporting event Gucci hosted a dinner with Sinner that was attended by Paul Mescal, Erin Doherty, Fionn O'Shea, Joe Keery, Naomi Ackie and George MacKay. The Gucci store on New Bond Street changed its window display to a tennis theme to showcase their tennis line, which includes a collaboration with the American tennis racket brand Head. What to expect from Oasis at Wembley, from setlist to stage times

The Oasis reunion tour is moving on to Wembley, the home of the band's seven London dates. After triumphant homecoming shows in Manchester, fans in the capital have plenty to look forward to. From on-stage times to support acts and the plans to control the ticketless crowds, here's all you need to know about what to expect on the Wembley leg of the tour. When are Oasis playing Wembley? Oasis have a whopping seven Wembley tour dates to get through, but they'll be split into two parts of the schedule. The Gallaghers will debut their first London date on Friday, 25 July, followed by Saturday, 26 July. After a few days off, they'll return to the Wembley stage on Wednesday, 30 July. They'll then perform nights four and five on Saturday 2, and Sunday 3 August. Although the tour moves on to other locations after the first five dates, the band will be back in town for two more nights on Saturday, 27 and Sunday, 28 September to close the UK leg. What time are Oasis and support acts on stage at Wembley? Ahead of Friday's first Wembley show, Oasis have released the expected timings that gates will open and that they and their support acts will be on stage. — Oasis (@oasis) July 23, 2025 Wembley will open the gates at 5pm, ahead of the first support act, Cast, taking to the stage at 6pm. Richard Ashcroft will then follow them at 7pm. Oasis are expected to be on stage from 8:15pm, and fans can look forward to two hours of the band's biggest hits as the show is set to end at 10:15pm ahead of a 10:30pm curfew. Oasis' Wembley setlist Although the setlist for the Wembley shows hasn't officially been announced, it has stayed the same for all of their reunion shows so far. This has been the setlist for Oasis Live '25 to date: Intro music: F***in' in the Bushes Hello Acquiesce Morning Glory Some Might Say Bring It On Down Cigarettes & Alcohol Fade Away Supersonic Roll With It Talk Tonight Little by Little Half a World Away D'You Know What I Mean? Stand By Me Cast No Shadow Slide Away Whatever Live Forever Rock 'n' Roll Star The Masterplan (encore) Don't Look Back In Anger (encore) Wonderwall (encore) Champagne Supernova (encore) Non-ticket holders warned not to attend Unfortunately for those who didn't manage to get tickets, all seven of the Wembley shows are now sold out. But if you're tempted to head down to Wembley anyway to try to catch a few bars of Wonderwall, the official advice is: don't. So many ticketless fans arrived at Heaton Park for the Manchester shows in the hope of watching the gigs for free from an area dubbed "Gallagher Hill" that a high fence was put up around the concert area. The police and council even had to step in to discourage people from attending and clear the park. Wembley Stadium officials have learned from Gallagher Hill and warned people not to loiter or turn up without a valid ticket. A statement from the venue said: "To support with the safe entry and exit of everyone within the stadium, no one is allowed to stand outside any entrance or on the Olympic Steps at the front of the stadium. Non-ticket holders will be moved on." There is, however, one official event that both those with and without tickets can enjoy - Wembley Park is hosting a free, outdoor photography exhibition from the archive of celebrated music photographer Kevin Cummins, Brothers: Liam and Noel Through the Lens of Kevin Cummins.
