Trump says no final decision yet on US strikes against Iran
WASHINGTON — United States (US) President Donald Trump (picture) said on Wednesday that he has yet to make a final decision on whether to authorise military strikes on Iran, adding that he prefers to wait until the 'last second.'
'I don't want to fight either. I'm not looking to fight. But if it's a choice between fighting and them having a nuclear weapon, you have to do what you have to do. And maybe we won't have to fight,' he told reporters in the Oval Office, Anadolu Ajansi reported.
Trump said he had 'ideas' on possible steps but preferred to decide 'one second before it's due.'
'Things change, especially with war. You go from one extreme to the other. War is very bad. There was no reason for this to be,' he added, noting he would be holding a Situation Room meeting within the hour.
Tensions have escalated sharply since June 13, when Israel launched large-scale strikes on Iran's military and nuclear sites, targeting facilities in several cities, senior command centres and nuclear scientists.
Iranian media reported on Wednesday that the death toll from Israeli airstrikes had risen to 585, with over 1,300 injured.
In response, Iran launched ballistic missile attacks on Israel, reportedly killing 24 people and injuring more than 500.

The visit from June 20-28, which marks his first official engagement with both countries as deputy prime minister, includes meetings with high level government leaders. There will be bilateral discussions with leaders from Uzbekistan and Russia, as well as site visits to strategic facilities, including energy infrastructure and innovation hubs. Fadillah's visit to Uzbekistan aims to build on the solid foundations laid during Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's visit to Malaysia earlier this year. In Uzbekistan's capital, Tashkent, Fadillah, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on President Mirziyoyev and hold a bilateral meeting with Energy Minister Jurabek Mirzamahmudov, as part of Malaysia's effort to enhance cooperation in the energy sector. Fadillah is also scheduled to visit Rosatom's nuclear energy facilities in St Petersburg, as Malaysia continues to assess the potential of nuclear energy as part of its long-term energy transition plan towards net-zero emissions by 2050. The visit resonates with Malaysia's evolving energy diplomacy. Notably, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's state visit to Russia in May 2025 led to commitments from Russian President Vladimir Putin to pursue joint ventures in natural gas and peaceful nuclear energy, including deepening Petronas's involvement in Russia. Diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Russia were established in 1967. 19th OANA General Assembly Opens In St. Petersburg

PETERSBURG (Russia), June 19 (Bernama) -- The 19th General Assembly of the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA), a major gathering of news agencies, kicked off in Russia's second-largest city on Thursday.
