Michael Owen's grand gallop: sharing his anticipation for the Hollywoodbets Durban July

Legendary soccer player and current racehorse trainer Michael Owen arrived in the city to engage with fans at Sibaya Casino & Entertainment and share his passion for horse racing. Image: Leon Lestrade/ Independent Newspapers Former football superstar Michael Owen is in South Africa, embracing the vibrant atmosphere of his inaugural Hollywoodbets Durban July. The ex-Liverpool striker is eager to immerse himself in South Africa's most anticipated horse-racing event, although he admits he still hasn't decided what to wear for the occasion. "Independent Media Lifestyle" caught up with the charismatic SunBet ambassador at the Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom, where he expressed his excitement about experiencing the annual racing spectacle that draws attention from across the region. "The first thing I've noticed about the city is that it's very similar to the UK in terms of lots of greenery, trees and land, it was nice to see. We've come in winter so it's a little bit colder than I thought it was going to be, I only brought one top!" Despite the chill, Owen's enthusiasm was unmistakable, especially as he looked forward to the main event. "I'm looking forward to more of the city, and the Durban July is going to be the biggest attraction for me, so I can't wait to see that tomorrow as well." "We've already been to various places. We did an event last night, we've got different dinners, we've got meet and greets with fans, we went to see the training centre (Summerveld Horseracing Clubhouse) this morning, which was exciting, so there are a few things on the agenda over the next few days." Legendary soccer player and current racehorse trainer Michael Owen arrived in the city to engage with fans at Sibaya Casino & Entertainment and share his passion for horse racing. He also signed autographs at a meet-and-greet with fans. Image: Leon Lestrade / Independent Newspapers While fashion often takes centre stage at the Hollywoodbets Durban July, Owen appears more keen to appreciate the full experience. "I'm not really a fashionista, I'm looking forward to the whole day. I love horses and I'm looking forward to seeing the big race, but I like to see everything, and see people enjoying themselves, I may possibly get down with the locals. "That's the good thing about horse racing, there is something in it for everybody, whether you're into fashion or horses, competition or gambling. It's a family event so I'm looking forward to the whole day." His insights into the racing field are great, especially as he brings his perspective from a recent stint at the prestigious Royal Ascot in the UK. "I listened intensely last night, and Eight On Eighteen is the favourite, sounds like everybody is keen on it. I actually like the look of the No.1 horse, Oriental Charm, who won it last year, drawn well, it's an older horse so more robust, I guess, but I'm guessing." "I'm interested in seeing what the differences are. I've just come off the back of doing five days of Royal Ascot, which is our showpiece in the UK. We've got a lot of festivals, but I think Royal Ascot is the one we're most proud of and I'm told that the Durban July is the big one over here that excites the nation. "I've seen some of the best horse racing events in the world, and obviously this will be different, but it will be amazing in your own way, which is the beauty of going to different countries and seeing how each country does it." "Lots of people will be there, the racing is great and I'm looking forward to seeing what else is great. There'll be the fashion, people and the excitement and the social environment so looking forward to seeing it.

EXCLUSIVE: Michael Owen expresses heartbreak over the tragic loss of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva

AS a father, Liverpool and England legend Michael Owen was especially heartbroken by the untimely death of 28-year-old Reds' forward Diogo Jota and his 25-year-old brother Andre Silva in a car crash in Spain on Thursday. 'I heard the news while I was up in the sky flying over to Durban. It's just the most tragic, most awful news you can hear, really. My first thoughts are with the family,' a visibly pained Owen said at Sibaya Casino in Durban on Friday afternoon. 'Diogo was only married for about two weeks. He leaves behind a wife and three young children. Being a father myself, I can't imagine the pain they are going through.' He said the loss to the club, and the greater football family paled in comparison. 'When I first hear of things like this, that hopefully don't happen too often, I always try to refrain from thinking what they were like as a footballer and what they mean to a football club and things like that,' the 45-year-old Owen told Independent Media Sports exclusively. 'That's almost what comes after. I think first and foremost he's a son, he's a father, he's a brother, he's a husband. He's all of those things and to the family they'll be hurting and broken more than anybody else, so that's what I feel we should be thinking of and praying for at the moment. 'I mean, his poor mother has lost two sons in one fell swoop. It's just horrific and, of course, very sad.' Jota scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool and won four major honours: two League Cups, one FA Cup and, most notably, last season's Premier League title. Owen did reveal a little about the forward who had just celebrated Portugal's Nations League triumph over Spain, and was said to be making his way back to Liverpool with his brother when the accident happened. The death of the brothers has cast a pall over their entire football and wider sporting world, with condolences and tributes pouring in from all over.

Picture: Paul Ellis/AFP Image: Paul Ellis/AFP Former Liverpool striker and Ballon d'Or winner Michael Owen has expressed deep sorrow after the tragic deaths of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother André in a car accident on Thursday. Jota, aged 28, and his brother tragically lost their lives in the crash, a devastating event that sent shockwaves through the football community. Michael Owen, currently serving as a Sunbet Ambassador, shared his heartfelt remarks during a media briefing at Sibaya Casino in Durban, just ahead of the highly anticipated Durban July horse racing event. "I think I heard the news yesterday while I was up in the sky flying over to Durban. It's just the most tragic, most awful bit of news that you can have really. My first thoughts are with the family," Owen said. "Diogo's mum has lost her two sons. Diogo himself was only married about two weeks. He leaves behind a wife and three young children. It just doesn't bear thinking about how sad it is and how much pain and grief people are going through at the moment. "First and foremost, that's my initial reaction being a father myself. I can't imagine. Of course, football side in many ways is irrelevant when you have so much grief from family members like that. So, yeah, tragic. You can't find the words to explain how you feel". Jota was an integral part of Liverpool's recent successes. Since joining the club in 2020, he has played a pivotal role in their Premier League title triumph last season. The Portuguese forward was also part of the squad that lifted the FA Cup in the 2021/22 campaign and reached the UEFA Champions League final that same season. Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp also paid tribute to Jota on his Instagram account on Thursday, expressing his heartbreak over the loss. "This is a moment where I struggle! There must be a bigger purpose! But I can't see it! I'm heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother André. "Diogo was a not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father! We will miss you so much! "All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them! Rest in peace - LoveJ." IOL
