BSA concludes second phase of satellite payload development project for carbon dioxide
The £1.4 million project was funded by the UK Space Agency's International Bilateral Fund.
During this phase, Bahraini engineers worked alongside British experts to design the mission concept and develop a hyperspectral camera for oxygen detection, which will enhance the accuracy of carbon dioxide monitoring. The team also contributed to the development of a carbon dioxide sensor and participated in commercial studies to assess the project's broader applications for Bahrain and the Gulf region.
Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Al Aseeri, Chief Executive of the BSA, highlighted that the collaboration aligns with the agency's strategy to build international partnerships and expand its capabilities, particularly in delivering advanced data and imagery services to benefit Bahrain and the Gulf.
Rasha Al Amad, Head of Strategic Planning, emphasised the importance of accurate greenhouse gas monitoring for effective climate action, noting that reliable carbon dioxide data is essential for countries and organisations to understand emissions patterns and develop strategies for carbon neutrality.
Space engineer Yaqoob Al Qassab described the project's second phase as a significant milestone, providing Bahraini engineers with advanced technical expertise. Once launched, the payload will deliver high-speed, real-time data on carbon dioxide emissions for Bahrain and the Gulf region. The project ultimately aims to deploy a constellation of satellites equipped with this technology.

BSA showcases Arab model for strategic space planning
The Bahrain Space Agency (BSA), in collaboration with the UN-affiliated Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education for Western Asia, held a workshop on strategic planning for space programmes, highlighting the Bahraini experience as a regional model. The workshop, attended by representatives from several Arab countries, aimed to foster regional cooperation and unify visions in the space sector. Technologies Yaqoob Al Qassab, Space Engineering Specialist, opened the workshop with a presentation on Bahrain's history in utilising space technologies, the national space policy framework, and the implementation mechanism of the agency's 2024–2028 strategic plan. He emphasised success factors including international cooperation, scientific research investment, national capacity building, and the importance of a supportive infrastructure for space projects. Aysha Al Haram, Chief Satellite Design Department at the BSA, presented a case study on translating strategic plans into tangible projects. Success She highlighted the success of Bahrain's joint satellite with the UAE, 'Light-1' (2021), and the national satellite 'Al Munther' (2025), the first Arab satellite to incorporate embedded artificial intelligence technologies. Al Haram emphasised the pivotal role of young Bahraini talent in successfully delivering these projects. She also outlined Bahrain's approach in linking strategic planning with practical space applications, such as using satellite data to monitor environmental challenges and establishing a satellite imagery lab to support decision-making in urban planning.

British F-35 Fighter Jet Set to Fly Again After Emergency Landing in Kerala
After being grounded for over a month, the British F-35B Lightning II fighter jet that made an emergency landing at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is finally ready to take off on Tuesday, July 23, 2025. The advanced stealth aircraft was forced to land on June 14 due to a technical fault. Since then, it has undergone careful inspection and repair work on the ground. A team of 14 expert aviation engineers from the United States and the United Kingdom — including members of the British Royal Navy and engineers from Lockheed Martin — arrived earlier this month to fix the issue. The problem was traced to a fault in the jet's hydraulic system. An earlier attempt at repairs had failed, prompting the arrival of the specialist team. Following successful repairs and a series of safety checks, British defence officials cleared the jet for flight. The F-35B, a cutting-edge fifth-generation stealth fighter capable of short take-offs and vertical landings, is part of the UK's HMS Prince of Wales Carrier Strike Group. The jet was returning from joint exercises with the Indian Navy in the Indo-Pacific region when the emergency landing occurred in Kerala. Officials have not disclosed where the jet is heading next, but it is expected to either rejoin the British naval fleet or return to the UK.
