Grand National Hurdle: Highland Blaze claims dominant Sandown win
Iron horse Highland Blaze has finally earned a break after his front-running win in Sunday's Grand National Hurdle at Sandown.
Bairnsdale trainer and part-owner Jackson Pallot sent Highland Blaze to Warrnambool horseman Shane Jackson to be prepared for the Jericho Cup on the flat last year but the gelding has since morphed into one of the state's most promising hurdlers.

Highland Blaze only had two weeks off in the nine months he had been with Jackson but had won five races on the flat and over hurdles before his Grand National triumph.
'He's been in work for I don't know how long before the Jericho Cup and he had two weeks off after the Jericho Cup but he's done everything we've asked of him,' Jackson said.
'He just gives his all every time he comes to the races.
'It's a great result.'
Jackson said young jockey Jordan Hart's early handling of the six-year-old won Highland Blaze the $250,000 contest.
'He let him be where he was happy and that was the winning of the race because there wasn't much tempo,' Jackson said.
'That was the perfect ride and what a beauty of a horse.'
Jackson won the Grand National Hurdle twice as a jockey but said watching on as a trainer was much more nerve-racking than riding.
The John Leek Jr-trained Affluential finished second, five lengths from the winner while Right Now finished third.
The $2.50 favourite The Cunning Fox was pulled up with 1200m to run, ending the unbeaten run to start his hurdling career.
The Cunning Fox's jockey Tom Ryan said the Patrick and Michelle Payne-trained gelding 'just stopped'.
'He was going but in a couple of strides, he was going backwards,' Ryan said.
'He just stopped.
'I'm sure they'll find something wrong when the vets go over him because that's just not him.'

Champion jockey Glen Boss pays tribute to semi-retired legendary trainer Lee Freedman
Twenty years after Lee Freedman's famous Melbourne Cup quote, champion jockey Glen Boss revealed he believed the legendary trainer's 'find the smallest child' remark was completely off the cuff. Shortly after the great mare Makybe Diva had won a record third straight Melbourne Cup carrying 58kg at Flemington, Freedman came up with the line that will be forever etched in the history of the race that stops a nation. 'Go out and find the smallest child here because that child might be the only person who lives long enough to see something like this again,' Freedman said at the time. For Boss, the clever comment encapsulated the trainer's razor-sharp wit and intelligence that helped him jag 124 Group 1s and cemented his standing as a household name in Australia. , opting not to renew his trainer's licence for the new racing season. He is now solely the manager of his Gold Coast stable, which has been handed over to his younger brother and Sydney trainer Michael Freedman. Boss chatted to Racenet this week about the profound effect that Lee Freedman and his brothers Anthony, Richard and Michael had on his illustrious career which ended in 2021. Hall of Fame trainer Freedman gave Boss his big break in 1995 on Flying Spur, who the Queenslander rode to victory in the Golden Slipper just a few days after Jim Cassidy's licence had been disqualified due to the 'jockey tapes' scandal. 'Until you sit back and look at his record, you forget how great this bloke was,' Boss said from South Africa, where the retired hoop is holidaying with his family. 'His sense of timing was always good. 'I mean that pivotal moment when the mare (Makybe Diva) won in the Cup in 2005 and he said that line 'go find the smallest child', those sort of things go down in history. 'I don't think he scripted that, I think it came straight out of his mouth. 'I remember seeing Lee around parties and things like that and he's a funny guy with a great sense of humour. 'He's great company and super intelligent to talk to. Not that many people would've got to see the fun side of Lee.' Lee Freedman won five Melbourne Cups, with Boss on board for two of those victories on Makybe Diva in 2004 and 2005, plus four Caulfield Cups, four Golden Slippers and two Cox Plates. 'Having been around him and observed him a fair bit, Lee has an incredible eye for detail which never ceases to amaze me,' said the 55-year-old Boss, who won 90 Group 1s. 'He always knew exactly where his horses were and how to push the button at the right time. 'It'd amaze me how he'd just look at a horse and say 'yep, we're ready now' or he'd say 'nup, we need to do one more thing'. 'He was never set to a pattern with a horse. He'd change his mind on the fly and he had unbelievable instincts.' As the driving force behind the famous Freedman Brothers Incorporated (FBI), Lee played a key role in bringing then-teenage apprentice jockey Damien Oliver from Perth to Melbourne in 1990 when he won the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas on Centro for the powerful stable. Oliver and the Freedmans combined for a superb 24 elite-level victories in the 1990s, including champion stayer Doriemus winning the Melbourne Cup-Caulfield Cup double in 1995. 'They played a big part in getting me over to Melbourne and gave me fantastic opportunities as a young apprentice,' said Oliver, who won an Australian record 129 Group 1s. 'Lee and all the brothers were very ambitious and that sort of shone through to me. 'I was a bit like that anyway but they really brought that side out of me.'

The son of Dundeel has made the stable switch to Anthony and Sam Freedman and did more than enough at his first start for them, working home strongly for second at Randwick Kensington. He can go one better here. ANDRON's (2) debut has been a long-time coming for connections with seven trials under his belt over multiple preps. He was doing his best work late in both hitouts this time and has to be a huge market watch. CELLARMASTER (8) and FEAZABEEL (3) can improve second-up. BET: SIRIUS LEGEND to win, saver Andron at odds. RACE 2: MIDWAY MAIDEN PLATE (1000m) It's hard to see SAVVY HAILLIE (11) starting anything other than a firm odds-on favourite. While this daughter of Hellbent is yet to win, she boasts incredible two-year-old form. She was only beaten by subsequent Group 1 Champagne Stakes winner Nepotism in Group 3 company before running second to gun filly Tempted in the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes to finish her juvenile season. I AM A WINNER (1) has been gelded and could be ready to unlock his undoubtable potential. CUBAN CIGAR (5) has trialled up well ahead of her debut and is among the place hopes. BET: Trifecta 11 (standout) from 1-5-6-8. RACE 3: F&M BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1200m) O'INVINCIBLE (1) is a blue blood mare by Snitzel out of Group 1 winner Viddora that is still lightly-raced. She was a sharp improver last time and only got gunned down late by a stakes-quality horse in waiting in the form of Amreekiyah at Canterbury. She can go one better here. Trainer Bjorn Baker took the country route he often uses to get her stablemate SHIRLEY'S TRIBUTE (8) on the board at Bathurst. It was a nice win and she should take plenty of benefit from it. MAMUSHKA (2), out of Group 1 winner Steps In Time, returns after showing plenty of promise in her first prep. BET: O'INVINCIBLE to win. RACE 4: BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP (1400m) OCEANFRONT (2) will be one of the first runners for Nacim Dilmi as he begins his training journey in charge of Domeland. He did enough first-up in heavy conditions at Tamworth to suggest he can run well again on what will be a rain affected surface. THE EXTREME CAT (1) has the best form in this race after flashing home for third at this track on July 17. The heavy conditions are the concern with Nathan Doyle also nominating him for Saturday. YOUR NOT THE BOSS (7) is a better horse than what he showed last Friday at this same track and trip. BET: OCEANFRONT each-way. RACE 5: CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1500m) WILD THOUGHTS (2) has made a promising start to his career with a win and two placings in three starts. His maiden victory came last time with an impressive two length success over 1500m at this venue. The horse that beat him before that, Cold Brew, has since won his next two so the form stacks up. He just needs to handle the ground to win again. AFLOAT (3) is another that broke his maiden well last start, eased down late to score a 1300m event at Hawkesbury. The step up to 1500m looks ideal. The same goes for FORBIDDEN RIFF (7), who got too far back in a 1300m event at Kembla last time. BET: WILD THOUGHTS to win. RACE 6: MAIDEN PLATE (2000m) SUPER ECLIPSE (14) finds herself in an even race filled with chances but she's among the best of them. She was a beaten favourite over a mile at Wyong last time but just looked to find them too slick for her when the speed went on. Stepping up to 2000m third-up should be in her sweet spot. ENTITLEMENT (12) has been knocking at the door with five placings in eight starts. She's rockhard fit, has a good draw and has a favourable on-speed racing pattern. Stablemate ALWAYS SHINING (1) could be a sharp improver stepping up in trip. BET: Boxed trifecta 1, 3, 5, 12, 14. RACE 7: CG&E BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1200m) SHIRVINGTON (1), like his namesake, can sprint well fresh with the topweight of 61.5kg. The Bjorn Baker-trained four-year-old was a winner first-up last prep before baking it up with success at this track and trip. FRONTEX (2) is back from a 153-day break. He showed plenty during his first prep with a win and two placings in three starts, breaking his maiden stylishly at Newcastle on March 7. ALIGNED (8) was given every chance to break his maiden last time and delivered at Gosford. He can run well again. BET: Quinella 1, 2. RACE 8: MAIDEN PLATE (1200m) BARBAROSSA (6) was scratched from Canterbury on Wednesday and finds himself at the provincials for new trainer Ciaron Maher. The last time we saw the Godolphin colt, he ran a creditable fourth in the Group 3 Bailleau on a heavy track. He looks ready to run well first-up. ARTISTIC VENTURE (11) is a promising filly that wasn't far away in a pair of Golden Slipper lead-ups, finishing fifth in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes and Group 3 Magic Night Stakes. She's got some class for sure. KENDALIA (2) is a knockout hope at odds in his return. BET: BARBAROSSA to win, quinella 6, 11.

Joe Pride wary of wet track for Missile Stakes favourite Private Eye
Trainer Joe Pride plans to keep options A, B and C open before deciding if early favourite Private Eye will take his place in Saturday's Group 2 $300,000 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick. Plan A is for Pride's grand galloper to make his return in Sydney's first stakes race of the season but the prospect of a wet track has the Warwick Farm trainer treading careful heading into the weekend. He has already made a contingency plan with Private Eye nominated for a 1000m trial on Friday morning that would see him line up in the same heat as star stablemate Ceolwulf. Pride wouldn't have to make a decision to Friday morning to decide which way he will go and by then he will have a clearer picture on what the weather is doing this weekend. More race-day rain has been forecast in Sydney this Saturday with Randwick already rated in the heavy range in the lead-up to the feature meeting. 'I would love to run in that Missile on Saturday, I really would and it is plan A but I am fearful of what rain is going to fall on Saturday,' Pride said. 'I will trial him if we don't run on Saturday but there is a Plan B and C for him. 'We could either go to the PB Lawrence first-up and Caulfield or wait to save him for the Winx Stakes. 'The weather is going to dictate but the latest I can leave it is Friday morning and we will work the horse on Thursday morning as usual before making a decision around 6.30 or 7am based on the weather predictions for Randwick.' Private Eye, last seen finishing third in a Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap, is the headliner in a field of 10 acceptors for the Missile Stakes. The two-time The Everest placegetter earning early support from punters, shortening from $3.30 into $2.60 favouritism with Nash Rawiller booked to ride. The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained General Salute ($3.70) and Bjorn Baker's Robusto ($5.50) are both in the race while Brudenell was $9 into $7.50 in earlier betting. • Pride isn't the only trainer reluctant to run his returning talent on a wet surface with Gary Portelli also revealing his intention to bypass the Missile Stakes with Encap ($18) if the track remains heavy. Portelli could wait for the Group 3 $250,000 Show County Quality (1200m) in two weeks' time with his Doncaster Mile placegetter. Meanwhile, Chris Waller is set to take a heavy-handed approach in the Premier's Cup Prelude (1800m) after accepting with eight runners, three of which landed among the emergencies. By far the most interesting of those contenders is More Felons ($11), which hasn't raced since finishing runner-up to Kalapour in 2024 Tancred Stakes (2400m) after suffering a tendon issue.
