Road in Cannock closed as surface melts in hot weather

BBC News14-07-2025
A road in Staffordshire was closed over the weekend when the surface melted in the heat, the county council has said. Staffordshire County Council reopened the stretch of road in Cannock on Monday after treating the road surface with granite dust.Peter Mason, cabinet member for strategic highways, said: "We took the decision to temporarily close Gorsemoor Road in Cannock at the weekend after we were made aware that the heat was affecting the condition of the road surface."According to the Met Office, temperatures in Cannock reached highs of 29C (84F) on the weekend with Mason adding it was "not unusual" for road surface temperatures to hit 50C (122F) during a heatwave.
Mason added the repairs would not come at an expense to taxpayers, after the council found work carried out had not met the required standard. He said: "Any work carried out on our highway network needs to meet our design and quality standards and, on this occasion, the surface treatment did not perform. "We will work with our contractor to arrange for the necessary repairs to take place at no expense to the taxpayer," added the Reform UK councillor.Tony Johnson, leader of Cannock Chase District Council – which is not responsible for the area's roads, but often receives complaints – said local highways were "notoriously bad"."We're renowned for our roads not being the best," he said.He added he had received reports that vehicle tyres had been damaged, and said he was concerned about the cost of repairing them. One motorist, who wished to remain anonymous, told the BBC she had spent more than £300 on replacement tyres after driving on Gorsemoor Road before the closure.

Water firms cause more than 100 potentially illegal sewage spills a day

England's water companies are causing more than 100 potentially illegal raw sewage spills a day into rivers and seas, far more than previously thought, The Times can reveal. New data, which suggests a previously unknown level of widespread breaches of the law, shows Anglian Water was the worst offender, followed by South West Water and the crisis-hit Thames Water. The potentially illegal nature of many of the spills raises the prospect of a wave of prosecutions and potential multimillion-pound fines for water firms. Regulators said the figures were 'unacceptable' and they would not hesitate to take enforcement action against breaches of permits. Raw sewage is legally permitted to pour into waterways from relief outfalls, known as storm overflows, on days of heavy rainfall. Those legal spills, which lasted a record 3.61 million hours last year, have sparked public outrage and targets from ministers to halve them.

UAE summer temperatures surge near record highs after hottest ever spring

Aug 4 (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates is facing surging temperatures this summer after its hottest spring ever, with temperatures soaring close to record highs at the start of August, according to data from the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). The extreme heat in the Gulf country is part of a broader global trend, as rising temperatures continue to reach new heights. Last year was the hottest ever recorded worldwide when global temperatures exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial era levels. The temperature surge followed the UAE's hottest April and May on record, the NCM said. On August 1, the temperature in the desert town of Sweihan hit 51.8 C (125.2 degrees Fahrenheit), the highest since 2021, the NCM said. This was just shy of the UAE's all-time high of 52.1 C (125.8 F) set in July 2002, also in Sweihan. Inland areas repeatedly experienced daily temperatures above 50 C in June and July, while seaside urban centres like Dubai and Abu Dhabi consistently posted highs in the mid-forties. The NCM expects the rest of the summer to remain hotter than usual, forecasting August temperatures 0.25 C to 0.5 C above average. While the NCM has warned residents to limit sun exposure and avoid being outdoors during peak hours, such precautions aren't always possible for those in outdoor industries, like construction and agriculture. "We are whining while sitting in the air-condition... they (outdoor labourers) are working actually 24/7 in this heat," said Yasir Shahad, a visitor from Australia.

SCOTLAND: Tattoo organisers make ‘difficult decision' to cancel performance due to storm

The organisers of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo have announced the 'difficult decision' to cancel Monday evening's performance due to the inclement conditions brought about by Storm Floris. The world-famous music, marching, dance and fireworks extravaganza takes place in August each year on the Esplanade at Edinburgh Castle, and this year was scheduled to be held each day from August 1-23. However on Sunday evening the organisers said Monday's event has been cancelled due to safety concerns resulting from Storm Floris, which is expected to bring gusts in excess of 60mph to the capital on Monday. In a post on social media the organisers said: 'We're sorry to announce that due to adverse weather warnings, we have made the difficult decision to cancel tomorrow's performance on August 4 at 9:30pm. 'We understand this will be disappointing, but the safety of our audience, performers and staff is our top priority. 'All tickets for the August 4 performance will be automatically cancelled and refunded. Those wishing to rebook will find up-to-date availability at Edinburgh is covered by a Met office amber weather warning on Monday, with a warning of damage to buildings and trees, possible power cuts, and transport problems as a result of high winds. The Tattoo is not the only casualty of the bad expected weather – the Fringe by the Sea at North Berwick has also been cancelled on Monday as a result of Storm Floris. In a social media post the organisers of the 10-day arts festival said: 'With Storm Floris incoming, we have taken the decision to close Fringe By The Sea today, Monday August 4. 'We will reopen on Tuesday August 5 from 10am. 'Ticket holders for events on Monday August 4 will be notified by email of cancellations or rescheduled events.
