AUSL crowns inaugural champion as Talons claim sotball title with late home run

Yahoo2 days ago
The first-ever Athletes Unlimited Softball League championship goes to the top-seeded Talons.
After winning a rain-delayed Game 1 in the AUSL championship series, the Talons completed the two-game sweep of the Bandits on Sunday, July 27 with another delayed victory at Rhoads Softball Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Sydney Romero's solo home run with one out in the top of the sixth inning broke a scoreless tie and provided the winning margin in a 1-0 championship-clinching victory. It was the former Oklahoma star's first homer of the postseason and just her second of the season.
The first game in the best-of-three series was postponed a day earlier in the bottom of the sixth inning on Saturday as the Talons led the Bandits 3-1. `
With the skies clear on Sunday morning, the Talons closed out the victory to put themselves on the brink of a title.
Romero, Fouts star in Game 2
Game 2 was a classic pitcher's duel between the Talons' Montana Fouts and the Bandits' Taylor McQuillin. They matched zeroes through the first four frames before the rain forced another delay in the top of the fifth inning.
Once the skies cleared, Fouts – playing on the same field where she starred collegiately at Alabama – returned to the mound for the Talons. Meanwhile, the Bandits turned to their ace Lexi Kilfoyl, who took the loss in Game 1.
With the game still scoreless in the sixth, Romero caught up with a fastball at the top of the strike zone and deposited it over the wall in left field to break the scoreless tie.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Bandits' Bubba Nickles-Camarena nearly tied the game with a long drive that hit just a few inches away from clearing the wall in left-center field. But she was erased one batter later on a line drive that was snagged by Talons first baseman Tori Vidalis, who dove back to the bag and beat Nickles-Camarena for the double play.
Fouts then struck out Bella Dayton to complete the shutout and the championship-clinching 1-0 victory.

Alabama wide receiver named to preseason watch list for top college football award

Per an announcement Monday afternoon, Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Ryan Williams has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2025 Maxwell Award. The Maxwell Award is presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football, and is an honor that the Crimson Tide have received five times before. Those winners were A.J. McCarron (2013), Derrick Henry (2015), Tua Tagovailoa (2018), DeVonta Smith (2020), and Bryce Young (2021). A sophomore, Williams enters the 2025 season coming off a stellar freshman campaign in which he received honors such as First Team All-SEC and Freshman All-America. Across 13 games, Williams hauled in 48 receptions for 865 yards and eight touchdowns, while also rushing for 48 yards and two more scores. Williams also played a role on special teams, returning 12 punts for 120 yards, as well as two kicks for 14 yards. A player who could be a sleeper candidate for the Heisman Trophy, is this yet another sign that the 2025 season is shaping up to be a massive one for Alabama's star wide receiver? Leicester City complete the signing of Asmir Begovic

Leicester City have signed veteran goalkeeper Asmir Begovic on a one-year contract. Begovic was a free agent after being released by Everton earlier this summer and had interest from several clubs before choosing to sign for Leicester. The Bosnian's move to Leicester will see him reunite with Marti Cifuentes, who previously managed him at Queens Park Rangers, where Begovic featured in 45 Championship games during the 2023/24 season. 'I feel really excited,' he told 'It's a pleasure to be here and a big honour to join such a great club. I can't wait to get going. It's not every day that a club of this stature gets in touch about joining. 'Hopefully we can have an exciting season where we can challenge at the top of the table and get the Club back where it belongs.' Having featured for Chelsea, Stoke City and Bournemouth in the past, Begovic brings a wealth of experience to Leicester City's goalkeeping department and will be expected to provide competition and mentorship. Begovic is Leicester's first signing of the summer window, but more arrivals are expected as the Foxes prepare for life back in the Championship following last season's relegation from the Premier League. Leicester are resigned to losing the likes of Wilfred Ndidi and Bilal El Khannouss and will need to replace them properly. The East Midlands outfit have one final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina to navigate this weekend before getting their Championship campaign underway at home to Sheffield Wednesday on August 10.

Sean Payton: Dre Greenlaw plays like Mike Tyson

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw made the most of the first day in pads at Broncos training camp. Greenlaw filled gaps and delivered hits throughout team drills in Denver and head coach Sean Payton said you didn't even have to be watching to know that Greenlaw was the one landing blows. Payton said "you can hear it" when Greenlaw makes a hit and then went on to compare his style to another knockout artist from a different sport. "He plays like Mike Tyson," Payton said, via the team's website. "He's tough, he's physical. He's built that way. There's not a lot of leaky yardage. Some guys [allow that]. He's a knock-back tackler. They stop where he hits them. There's an intensity to how he plays. He's one of those players that if you put the film on and didn't say anything, at some point early, you'd ask, 'Who is this guy?'" Greenlaw was limited to two games for the 49ers last year because of injuries and a quad injury interrupted his first offseason in Denver, so one key for the Broncos will be making sure Greenlaw's healthy enough to deploy that physicality on a regular basis. If he is, facing an already tough Broncos defense will be even less enjoyable for opposing offenses in 2025.
