Madras High Court orders commencement of trial

The Hindu2 days ago
The Madras High Court on Monday (August 11, 2025) ordered the commencement of trial in a 10-year-old defamation suit filed by former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni seeking ₹100 crore in damages from Zee Media Corporation, journalist Sudhir Chaudhary, retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer G. Sampath Kumar, and News Nation Network for having dragged his name in to the IPL betting scam.
Justice C.V. Karthikeyan also appointed an advocate commissioner to record the evidence of Mr. Dhoni on mutually convenient premises, to all the parties involved and their counsel, in Chennai. The advocate commissioner was appointed as Mr. Dhoni's personal appearance at the High Court, for the examination in chief as well as cross-examination by the defendants, might lead to chaos due to him being a celebrity.
The orders were passed after senior counsel P.R. Raman submitted an affidavit sworn by Mr. Dhoni expressing his intent to proceed with the trial in the defamation suit pending since 2014. The cricketer said that he would be available for examination as well as cross-examination between October 20, 2025, and December 10, 2025, and that the venue and specific dates could be fixed on the basis of mutual convenience.
'The above request is made with the intent to avoid any undue delay (in disposal of the suit pending in the High Court for over a decade) and to support the fair, just, and speedy adjudication of the suit. I state that I shall extend my full co-operation with the Advocate Commissioner and comply with all directions issued by this honourable court regarding the trial and the recording of evidence,' the affidavit read.
When Mr. Raman, assisted by advocate Sandesh Saravanan, requested the court to consider appointing a retired district judge as an advocate commissioner for recording evidence, Justice Karthikeyan said that he would pick a name from a list maintained by the High Court. He also stated that the defamation suit would be listed for hearing before the court after the completion of recording of evidence in full.
The trial in the suit had got delayed for over 10 years because of multiple applications taken out by the parties seeking one relief or another. In December 2023, a Division Bench of Justices S.S. Sundar (since retired) and Sunder Mohan had convicted the retired IPS officer of criminal contempt of court and sentenced him to 15 days of simple imprisonment. However, the Supreme Court stayed the punishment in 2024.
Mr. Dhoni had filed the contempt plea against the retired IPS officer for having made contumacious remarks against the Supreme Court as well as the High Court while defending the defamation suit. In July 2022, the then Advocate General R. Shunmugasundaram had granted permission to the cricketer to proceed with the contempt plea, after being satisfied that the remarks made by Mr. Kumar, in his written statement to the suit, amounted to scandalising court proceedings.

FC Goa defeat Oman's Al Seeb to seal AFC Champions League Two Group stage berth

Margao, Aug 13 (UNI) FC Goa sealed their spot in the AFC Champions League Two 2025-26 Group Stage after staving off a late fightback from Al Seeb Club of Oman to walk away with a 2-1 win in their Preliminary Stage tie at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here today. Dejan Drazic and Javier Siverio scored for FC Goa, and the Gaurs will now wait to discover their Group Stage opponents on Friday. Al Seeb started aggressively, testing FC Goa as early as the second minute with Nasser Al Rawahi forcing defender Pol Moreno into an acrobatic clearance, while Zahir Al Aghbari's follow-up from inside the box was blocked. The home side took time to settle and could have broken the deadlock in the ninth minute when Drazic broke free on the left, but with only the keeper to beat, the midfielder's soft shot was easily collected by Ahmed Al Rawahi. Al Rawahi was in the thick of things again for Al Seeb in the 23rd minute when his timely tackle opened up space to set up Abdul Aziz Al Muqbali, whose curling effort was parried away by FC Goa keeper Hrithik Tiwari. However, FC Goa showed their quality a minute later when Borja Herrera's instinctive long pass found Dražić on the left, with the midfielder evading Al Rawahi's challenge before delicately chipping the ball over Ahmed Al Khamisi and into the back of the net. The Indian Super League side stayed on top of things in the second half with Drazic out muscling the Al Seeb defenders to surge into the box before forcing Al Rawahi to palm away his stinging shot in the 52nd minute. The momentum saw FC Goa extend their lead moments later when Herrera's cross off a corner floated into the box perfectly for Siverio to rise above Al Rawahi for a headed finish. Al Seeb, the 2022 AFC Cup winners, reduced the deficit at the hour mark through Nasser Al Rawahi's strike from close range off Ali Al Busaidi's cutback, but that was to be it as FC Goa became the second Indian side to book their spot in this season's Group Stage after 2024-25 ISL Shield Winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant. The Gaurs and the Mariners will discover their Group Stage opponents after the draw on August 15. UNI BM

HC warns Nagpur officials of legal action on stray dog menace

Nagpur: The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court issued a stern warning to civic and police officials over persistent stray dog menace, declaring it will now hold "every responsible officer from top to bottom personally liable for failures in enforcement". During Wednesday's hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by activist Vijay Talewar, the bench of Justice Anil Kilor and Justice Vrushali Joshi said for over two decades, the court was passing orders on this issue without tangible results. "We will not keep issuing reminders. If there is failure in implementation, legal action will follow," the court observed. The bench ordered Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to submit a complete list of all officers responsible for stray dog control, stating notices will be sent to each of them. "They will be given an opportunity to respond, and accountability will be fixed individually," the court said. The petitioner's counsel, senior advocate Firdos Mirza, argued that slapping notices on municipal commissioners have proved ineffective. "Every officer in the chain needs to be made answerable," he told the court. The judges referred to earlier directions that police issue notifications under Section 44 of the Maharashtra Police Act, and NMC take action against those feeding stray dogs in public spaces — both of which, they noted, were not complied with. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The T-shirt you've been waiting for—comfort and style in one lininco Undo Mirza sought contempt proceedings against the municipal and police commissioners, but the court noted that in earlier cases, unconditional apologies shielded them from consequences. "This time, once notices are served, action will follow," the bench warned. The court even hinted at possible contempt proceedings against the state's principal secretary (urban development) if failures persist, emphasising the matter will not be closed without "something concrete" being achieved. The next hearing is scheduled next week, with liberty granted to the petitioner's counsel to submit further recommendations for effective implementation. "This will be your last complaint," the bench told Talewar, signalling its intent to end decades of inaction. # Key Observations (Oral) by the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court 20 years of court orders on stray dog control failed to yield results All responsible officers, from top to bottom, will now be held personally accountable NMC must submit a list of every officer involved in implementation Notices will be issued individually, with an opportunity for response before action Orders under Section 44 of Maharashtra Police Act remain unimplemented Civic body yet to act against those feeding stray dogs in public spaces Prior unconditional apologies allowed officials to avoid consequences.
