Search ends for missing crew after Yemen's Houthi rebels sink ship in Red Sea
The announcement came as satellite photos show long, trailing oil slicks from where the bulk carrier Eternity C sank, as well as another where the sinking of the bulk carrier Magic Seas by the Iranian-backed Houthis took place.
Both ships were attacked over a week ago by the rebels as part of their campaign targeting vessels over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip that's upended shipping in the Red Sea, through which $1 trillion of goods usually passes a year.

Private security firms Ambrey and Diaplous Group ran the search for those missing from the Eternity C, which had a three-man security team aboard but requested no escort from either the U.S. Navy or a European Union force in the region. The ship came under attack July 7 and faced hours of Houthi assaults by small arms and bomb-carrying drones before ultimately sinking in the Red Sea.
The initial attack on the Eternity C came a day after the attack on the Magic Seas. Both ships were Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned vessels.
Ten people were recovered alive from the attack, including eight Filipino crew members and a Greek and Indian from the vessel's security team, the EU's Operation Aspides said. At least four are presumed to have been killed in the attack, leaving 11 others missing, the EU mission has said.
The Houthis claimed to have taken some mariners after the attack but have offered no evidence of that. The U.S. Embassy in Yemen said it believed the rebels had 'kidnapped' some of the crew.
'The decision to end the search has been taken by the vessel's Owner reluctantly but it believes that, in all the circumstances, the priority must now be to get the 10 souls safely recovered alive ashore and to provide them with the urgent medical support they need at this difficult time,' a statement by the security firms said. 'The thoughts of all those involved in the rescue operation are with the families of those who remain missing.'
The attacks on the vessels also raised concerns about damage to the environment in the Red Sea, home to corals and wildlife that draws divers, tourists and scientists. Satellite photos from Planet Labs PBC analysed Monday (July 14, 2025) by The Associated Press show large, spreading oil slicks in the southern Red Sea where the vessels sank.
Wim Zwijnenburg, an analyst with the Dutch peace organization PAX, estimated the length of the slick from the Eternity C at some 80 km and from the Magic Seas at some 65 km. He warned it could threatened wildlife reserves in nearby Eritrea in Africa and elsewhere.
The oil comes from the ship's tanks and had been used for their own propulsion. Other shipping disasters have seen much of the slicks evaporate on their own, though they cause damage to the environment, too.
From November 2023 to December 2024, the Houthis targeted more than 100 ships with missiles and drones. In their campaign so far, the Houthis have sank four vessels and killed at least eight mariners.
The Houthis stopped their attacks during a brief ceasefire in the war. They later became the target of an intense weekslong campaign of airstrikes ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump before he declared a ceasefire had been reached with the rebels.
The Houthis' new attacks come as a new possible ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war remains in the balance. Meanwhile, the future of talks between the U.S. and Iran over Tehran's battered nuclear program is in question after Israel launched a 12-day war against the Islamic Republic that saw the Americans bomb three Iranian atomic sites.

India, US talks for proposed trade pact going on at a very fast pace: Piyush Goyal
Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel The negotiations between India and the US for a proposed trade agreement are going at a fast pace, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Indian team has reached Washington for the next round of talks on the first tranche of the bilateral trade agreement."Negotiations are going on at a very fast pace and in the spirit of mutual cooperation so that we can come out with a win-win trade complementing agreement with the United States," Goyal told reporters Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal at a separate event said that negotiations for proposed trade agreements with the European Union (EU) and the US are going said that the free trade agreements (FTAs) that India is doing are one of the key enablers to promote global capability centres (GCCs) in the country."So if you look at the free trade agreements today, which we are doing with the UK, which we have just announced, with European Union (EU), which is going on, with the US again discussions are on with several other countries in the world," Barthwal said here at CII GCC Business Summit and the US are negotiating a bilateral trade agreement (BTA). They are targeting to conclude the first phase of the pact by fall (September-October) of this India and the EU are also negotiating an June 2022, India and the 27-nation EU bloc resumed negotiations for a comprehensive free trade agreement, an investment protection agreement and a pact on geographical indications (GIs) after a gap of over eight talks stalled in 2013 due to differences over the level of opening up of the markets. India and the EU are targeting to conclude the free trade deal by the end of this the secretary said that today's agreements are different from the traditional FTAs, which were confined to traditional trade, tariffs and manufacturing. The new pacts are a more complex set of agreements which include services, a regulatory system in services, including the FDI (foreign direct investment)."Those are being looked at (in the new pacts)," he said, adding that now there is also an institutional mechanism in these pacts to look at issues like harmonising regulations and these are important facets of GCCs, he said, adding that modern FTAs will lead to the innovation corridor, which will facilitate GCCs in India "We are looking at the IPR (intellectual property rights) chapters. We are looking at what the coordination mechanism will be in case disputes arise. That is another area which we look at in FTAs," the secretary the new age pacts focus on principles of digital trade, which the partner countries have to adopt."If there is a data localisation or data privacy laws, then how will they be looked at. That is another angle, which we define in these FTAs," he new trade agreements, Barthwal said, are addressing a whole gamut of issues. "And therefore, it is taking a lot of time when we do these FTAs. There are detailed discussions, detailed deliberations, and detailed stakeholder consultation," he added that in the FTA with the UK, there is a chapter on innovation, which was not the case earlier. There is also a mechanism to set up innovation working groups under that deal, which was announced on May 6, but has not yet been signed."The ultimate point of these FTAs is that once these are (businesses) will get certainty about those regulations, because those regulations are not going to change unless and until you have agreed differently. And it gives certainty," Barthwal said.

DMK's student wing holds protest in Coimbatore against Palaniswami's remarks on temple funds
The DMK's student wing held a protest in Coimbatore on Monday condemning AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami's remarks on the use of temple funds for educational institutions. The demonstration, held at Tatabad in Coimbatore city, also criticised the BJP-led Union government's education policies. Led by student wing secretary R. Rajiv Gandhi, the protest saw participation from party MPs K. Prakash and Ganapathi P. Rajkumar, district secretaries, and office-bearers of the students' wing. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Rajiv Gandhi said Mr. Palaniswami had remained silent during his tenure as Chief Minister on issues such as NEET and the National Education Policy, and was now criticising the use of temple funds without understanding their purpose. He alleged that the BJP was scripting Mr. Palaniswami's statements and accused him of aligning with RSS-backed narratives. The protesters also criticised the withdrawal of scholarships that were earlier available to minority students under schemes named after A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Maulana Azad. They said the DMK government had stepped in to support the affected students. Slogans were raised condemning Mr. Palaniswami and the Union government, with participants rejecting what they described as politically motivated narratives against the Dravidian model of governance.
