Texas flood relief efforts are getting fundraising help from a new Door County candle

Yahoo4 days ago
Relief is needed for those affected by the devastating and deadly flash flooding that washed over parts of central Texas July 4 and for the emergency workers trying the help, and Door County Candle Co. once again is doing what it can.
The newest fundraising sale by the Carlsville-based candle making company is a "Texas Flood Relief" candle, with 100% of profits going to the American Red Cross for its relief efforts in that area. According to the Red Cross website, those efforts include supporting emergency shelters, which serve not just as a refuge but also a place to charge phones and devices and possibly reconnect family members, and by providing food, relief supplies and other critical resources like financial and family travel assistance.
The candle is white in a clear glass jar and carries Door County Candle's proprietary vanilla scent. It was launched July 6 and generated more than $5,500 in funds for the Red Cross in its first four days, company co-owner Christiana Trapani said to the Advocate.
"The response has been very strong," Trapani said. "A ton of people have reached out, and a lot of people in Texas have contacted us, thanking us for reaching out."
The floods happened after a large storm fueled by unusually high moisture in the atmosphere stalled over central Texas and dumped several inches of rain an hour for several hours, causing the Guadalupe River to suddenly rise from 3 to 30 feet and turn into raging, racing torrents of water. As of July 10, more than 120 people are confirmed dead with another 150-plus missing as search efforts continue.
The Texas Flood Relief candle is the latest in a series of "Support a Cause" candles created by Door County Candle to raise funds for specific needs, many to help fund relief work in places hammered by natural disasters.
The series was started by Trapani and her co-owner and husband, Nic, a little more than a year after the company began making and selling blue-and-yellow Ukraine Candles in February of 2022 to raise funds for emergency relief help in Ukraine shortly after that country was inveded by Russia in a war that continues. The results were way beyond what Trapani, a second-generation Ukrainian-American, hoped to accomplish, with more than $1 million raised in the first year. (Those candles remain available.)
Since the Ukraine Candle, the company has made candles for numerous charitable and relief causes. Some have been smaller and more localized or regionalized, but others are for devastating events or natural disasters in America and around the world. The most recent "Support a Cause" effort before the Texas candle is the "Golden State California Wildfire Relief" candle the company launched in January for Red Cross for relief efforts in the metropolitan Los Angeles area devastated by wildfires.
Other "Support a Cause" candles for national or international causes include a Beachside Candle from 2022 that raised more than $14,300 for people on the Gulf Coast of Florida affected by Hurricane Ian, a Hope Candle in 2023 that raised more than $8,100 for UNICEF to provide humanitarian and developmental aid to children in areas of Turkey and Syria devastated by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake, and the Liliko'i Candle launched in 2023 that raised more than $60,000 for relief efforts on the Hawaiian island of Maui following the wildfires there that virtually wiped out the historic town of Lahaina and killed more than 100 people.

Baglietto Unveils New Superyacht Concept

Baglietto 53 meter concept What do you get when an Italian shipyard with over 165 years of shipbuilding heritage, a highly experienced Italian yacht designer, and an award-winning, NYC-based design studio that's known for creating distinctive residences, resorts, retail and workspaces throughout the world, announce a new creative partnership? The answer: The Vesta 56 superyacht concept the Baglietto shipyard just unveiled that features elegant exteriors designed by Enrico Gobbi Team for Design and a contemporary interior design by Meyer Davis. For me, one of the cool things about this concept is the way the yachting establishment—Baglietto and the Enrico Gobbi Team for Design—have embraced the fresh ideas that Meyer Davis (relative newcomers to the yachting space that are fresh off their successful debut yacht interior design Seawolf X) brings to the project. Here is the Meyer Davis-designed interior of the Vesta 56 superyacht Baglietto just unveiled 'Vesta 56 is the expression of our philosophy says Fabio Ermetto, CCO of Baglietto. 'With Enrico Gobbiʼs elegant exterior lines and the fresh, sophisticated vision of Meyer Davis, we are creating something extraordinary—an experience that speaks to beauty, innovation, and balance. We're proud to collaborate with design firms that share our passion for timeless yet contemporary style.ˮ The yacht's slender vibe is thanks to design details like ultra-thin aft deck overhangs and long runs of uninterrupted windows that are inspired by aeronautical design. In fact, according to early reports, the intent was to create a yacht defined by 'lines in movement', a sense of continuous flow and energy, even when the yacht is at anchor. Upper deck of the Vesta 56 concept by Baglietto 'The 56 meter Baglietto is characterized by a captivating design, generous spaces, and a sleek and dynamic profile,"says Enrico Gobbi. "The project brief requested for large and comfortable exterior and interior areas, without compromising the aesthetics of the yacht. For this reason, dynamic and stretched lines were chosen to reach the perfect balance between generous volumes and an elegant streamlined profile.' The interplay between exterior and interior is obviously at the center of the design philosophy. The windows are particularly tall to provide panoramic views, while sharp, sculpted elements mix with soft curves to create a distinctive exterior. The Meyer Davis-designed owners suite onboard the Vesta 56 concept yacht from Baglietto Meanwhile Meyer Davis presents an interior design that they say is less about spectacle and more about sensation—a place not just to explore the world, but to feel at home in it. 'We were inspired by the name Vesta 56 for its rich symbolism," says Gray Davis, Co-Founder of Meyer Davis. "The quiet strength of home. The comfort of sanctuary. And the enduring presence of spaces designed not just for living, but for feeling truly at home. Each material, curve, and proportion is imbued with intention to reflect that spirit. The interiors have a quiet strength that marks each space with meaning and memory.' The main deck onboard the Vesta 56 Signature spaces such as the main deck salon, dining room, and upper lounge are designed to nurture connection and comfort. Retractable glass walls are designed to blur the threshold between inside and outside. While architectural lighting and curved built-in furniture capture the changing light that is inherent onboard yachts of this size. The stylish aft deck area of the Vesta 56 concept yacht 'Embracing organic form, personal layers, and lived-in elegance, we designed the yacht to age gracefully, accumulating stories as it travels' says Will Meyer, Co-Founder of Meyer Davis. Rolls-Royce invests $75 million to expand South Carolina plant

British aerospace and defense company Rolls-Royce announced it is investing $75 million to expand its engine manufacturing facility in Aiken, South Carolina. The investment will boost output of mtu Series 4000 diesel engines, which are used in backup power systems for data centers and other critical infrastructures. "The increased investment strengthens our ability to serve our U.S. customers — especially in the fast-growing American data center industry," Adam Wood, managing director for Rolls-Royce's power systems division in America, said in a Tuesday press release. The company said the expansion will create 60 new jobs, increase capabilities and strengthen Rolls-Royce's U.S. industrial presence. The move also reflects Rolls-Royce's shift into energy and power systems, beyond its traditional aerospace focus. Rolls-Royce said it will machine additional mtu Series 4000 components in the U.S. as part of the investment. The company currently produces many the components in Germany and sends them to the U.S. as finished goods. "We are proud to support America's growing demand for reliable, domestically made energy systems that strengthen our nation's energy independence and security," said Adam Riddle, CEO for North America. This is the second major announcement in two days for the company. On Monday, the United Kingdom and Czech Republic announced a partnership to collaborate on small modular reactors, according to Reuters. Rolls-Royce SMRs could export up to six reactors to the Czech Republic under the deal. The South Carolina site is now set to become a hub in Rolls-Royce's North American power systems strategy. The first phase of the expansion will begin in the first quarter of 2026, and production will begin in July 2027.
