Former Nickelodeon Star Shocks in Surprise Cameo on 'The Last of Us'

Yahoo05-05-2025

Over the course of a season and a half, The Last of Us has brought an incredible caliber of names into its apocalyptic wasteland, ranging from Nick Offerman to Melanie Lynskey to Catherine O'Hara. But the HBO drama took a step out of the ordinary in this week's episode, as actor Josh Peck made a suprise cameo in the opening minutes.
Episode 4 of Season 2 opened with a flashback to 2018 in Seattle. In it, we get our first glimpse at militia leader Isaac (Jeffrey Wright), then working for FEDRA. Alongside Isaac are a gaggle of men decked out in SWAT uniforms. That includes Peck's character, who eagerly regales his co-workers with a story of a FEDRA thug who cracked down on a group of "voters" (their ironic nickname for disenfranchised citizens) disseminating pamphlets.

FEDRA, AKA the Federal Disaster Response Agency, is a fictional agency of the U.S. government tasked with responding to disasters and emergencies. When the 2003 corydceps outbreak first ravaged the world, FEDRA took charge of the government, setting up "quarantine zones" in major metropolitan areas. The first season of The Last of Us took us into 2023 when FEDRA still had an iron grip on the "QZs," imposing martial law and being accused of fascist behavior.
Even though this scene takes place five years earlier – and on the exact opposite side of the country from where Season 1 began – it, and Peck's character's temperament, serve as a firm reminder of FEDRA's unchecked power. In his brief time on screen, Peck gloats about the authority they're able to exercise, and many of his cohorts laugh and join in on the "bro-ing down" in support.

Josh Peck started his career as a child actor, appearing in the film Snow Day and The Amanda Show. His big breakthrough came with his next Nickelodeon series, Drake & Josh. Starring alongside fellow Amanda Show veteran Drake Bell, the comedy ran from 2004 to 2007, making it one of Nick's most successful sitcoms. Peck went on to star in shows like Grandfathered, How I Met Your Father and Turner & Hooch, and recently made a cameo in the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer.
While Peck's appearance on The Last of Us was previously unannounced, the actor has made his fandom of the series known. Last week, he posted a TikTok sketch, simulating a therapy session in the wake of the tragic and shocking death of series protagonist Joel (Pedro Pascal). And, in that video, the actor actually alluded to the fact that he would be appearing on our screens soon, writing, "Oh and I'm officially allowed to say, episode 4, let's just say, you're not ready."
Unfortunately, Peck's escapades on The Last of Us were evidently one and done. The cold open ended up serving as the backstory for Isaac's defection from FEDRA and joining the "voters" in the resistance Washington Liberation Front. As his formal act of rebellion, Isaac proceeds to toss two live grenades into the FEDRA truck, then locks the doors. Save one person, who follows him into the WLF, everyone else is brutally killed, including Peck's character.
With the world essentially ending in 2003, The Last of Us has much of its set decoration and aesthetic frozen in a period of nostalgia. And they just showcased that in a major way by cameoing – and killing off – a millennial fan-favorite actor.

Sarah Jessica Parker admits she was ‘shocked' the ‘And Just Like That…' audience disliked Che Diaz

And just like that, Sarah Jessica Parker found out what the fandom really thought. The 'Sex and the City' alum, 60, who reprised her role as the iconic Carrie Bradshaw in the show's spinoff 'And Just Like That…' revealed she was 'shocked' to find out the audience didn't like Sara Ramirez's character Che Diaz. 'A friend of mine brought it up to me, and it's like: 'What are you talking about?'' Parker said in an interview with The Guardian on Friday. 'And he said: 'Yeah, there's all this conversation.'' They left the show after the second season wrapped. Parker explained to the outlet that she doesn't listen to backlash against projects she stars in. Advertisement 'I've been an actor for 50 years, and I've almost never paid attention to peripheral chatter,' the 'Hocus Pocus' star added, noting that when it came to Ramirez she 'Ioved working with them.' 7 Sara Ramirez and Sarah Jessica Parker in 'And Just Like That…' During Ramirez's run, fans took to social media to share their dislike of the stand up comedian. One viewer wrote on X, 'Stop subjecting us to che, they are making it really hard to get into and just like that…. Well, them, and all the other annoying things that have ruined a perfectly good cupcake of a show.' Advertisement A second social media user wrote, 'I've started to skip the Che Diaz scenes in And Just Like That but now the episodes are like two minutes long.' 7 The HBO drama 'And Just Like That…' Rounding out the annoyance, a third watcher said: 'Trigger warning for this week's episode of And Just Like That: it opens with Che doing stand up again.' Before Ramirez concluded their run on the spinoff, the 'Grey's Anatomy' alum wrote on Instagram, 'I am not the fictional characters I have played, nor am I responsible for the things that are written for them to say.' Advertisement 'I am a human being, an artist, an actor. And we are living in a world that has become increasingly hostile toward anyone who dares to free themselves from the gender binary, or disrupt the mainstream.' Ramirez also told Entertainment Weekly that they're 'actually nothing like' the person they portrayed on the HBO show. 7 Sara Ramirez and Cynthia Nixon in 'And Just Like That…' Craig Blankenhorn 'It was absolutely exhausting to bring this person to life,' they confessed. 'I had to stay in a bit of an extroverted mode in order to do that. So the efforts that it took to bring this character forth makes me feel really proud of what I've been able to deliver.' Although Ramirez was thrilled to see their character evoke chatter. 'I love that people have passionate opinions, that Che struck a nerve,' they said. 'I think it's really interesting to play a person who elicits such strong reactions and who can start much-needed conversations. If the storylines created major watercooler moments after each episode, then we did our job.' In May, Nixon, 59, divulged that she thinks 'And Just Like That…' works best when the core group of characters aren't in long term romances. 7 Che Diaz and Miranda. Advertisement 'I think our show is always at its most quintessential when as many of us as possible are single and dating and failing at it,' the actress stated in a conversation with Entertainment Weekly at the time. Now, with season three of the drama, which also stars Kristin Davis, Nicole Ari Parker, Sarita Choudhury and John Corbett, in full swing, viewers are in store for a whole new slew of relationships. So far, Rosie O'Donnell guest starred as a virgin nun who slept with Miranda during the premiere episode. 'Rosie and I have known each other for a long time,' Nixon told the outlet. 'I was like, 'Shall I text her?' And [showrunner Michael Patrick King] was like, 'Sure!' And she was wonderfully excited about the prospect, so we had a great time.' Advertisement 7 Sara Ramirez as Che Diaz. Season 3, Episode 1, titled 'Outlook Good,' saw O'Donnell, 63, take on the role of Mary, who meets Miranda a lesbian bar. The two then headed back to Mary's hotel room where they then have sex. 'One of the things that it meant was that Miranda was single again,' Nixon told E! News last month about Miranda's breakup from Che. 'And that the tensions between Miranda and Che—and also Miranda and Steve—had been quelled and quieted.' Advertisement 7 Sara Ramirez and Sarah Jessica Parker. Craig Blankenhorn 'Just speaking for Miranda,' Nixon explained, 'it meant that she was setting out on this new dating world having decided she wanted to date women and nonbinary people, but not really quite knowing how to go about that.' Also set to guest star is 'Law & Order' vet Mehcad Brooks. Advertisement 'The part of my personality that will do anything for a laugh that has no place on 'Law & Order,' I get to do it [on this show],' the 44-year-old gushed to The Post in May. 'One of the highlights of my career is that I get to act across from Nicole Ari Parker,' Brooks added. I've known her for 20 years, we've worked together before – but never in this just a joy to be around, I'm learning so much.'

Maher advises Democrats to ‘win' Elon Musk ‘back'

Comedian and media pundit Bill Maher is advising Democrats to 'win' back tech billionaire Elon Musk after the world's richest man fell out publicly with President Trump. Maher slammed some Democratic strategists' proposal that the party needs to have its own version of Joe Rogan. Instead, Maher said, Democrats should ask themselves why they lost 'the old one' since he 'used to be on your side.' 'He's expressed unease with some things Trump is doing, as has a certain disgruntled former employee named Elon Musk, who, like Joe, is another guy who, five years ago, was thought of as a liberal but got driven into the other camp by bad attitudes and bad ideas, a reversal I completely understand, although I would never emulate,' Maher said Friday night on HBO's 'Real Time with Bill Maher.' 'They tried real hard to cancel Rogan a few years ago, and when Elon hosted Saturday Night Live in 2021, well before he was a Trumper, some of the cast members gave him the cold shoulder for the sin of being rich. You think people don't remember when you do this s— to them that it's not going to have blowback,' the comedian said, alluding to Musk's previous support for Democratic candidates, including former Presidents Biden and Obama. 'Now me again. You don't have to win me back, because I never left. But all the guys in America like Joe and Elon, yeah, you do have to win them back. The good news is you can,' he added on Friday night. Maher then pointed to Musk's recent criticism of the administration, including his disappointment with Trump's 'big, beautiful bill.' Trump said Thursday at the White House that he had a 'great' relationship with Musk, but that might not be the case anymore. The tech billionaire and former Department of Government Efficiency adviser then fired back, signaling he is open to forming a third party, backing calls for Trump to be impeached and accusing the president of being listed in the Jeffrey Epstein files. Trump warned that he could opt to cut off Musk's companies' contracts with the federal government. 'So I think we call that a gettable voter, someone who's mulling a change,' Maher said of Musk. 'Maybe this will put quietest to the nonsense that Elon and Rogan too went to the dark side.' Ever since suffering heavy losses during the 2024 election cycle, Democrats are looking to rebuild their image, shore up their base and find ways to effectively counter Trump. The party is also looking for its next leader. Democrats have also expressed frustration about efforts to bring men into their coalition who, in November, backed Trump over former Vice President Harris. The GOP did a better of job of speaking to men during the race, particularly younger men, through mediums such as podcasts. 'They kicked our a‑‑es all over the place with these guys,' one top Democratic strategist told The Hill. 'They met male voters exactly where they were and we, on the other hand, had nothing comparable.' At least one House Democrat is open to wooing back Musk, who previously was a Democratic Party donor, into the party's tent. 'If Biden had a big supporter criticize him, Trump would have hugged him the next day. When we refused to meet with @RobertKennedyJr, Trump embraced him & won. We can be the party of sanctimonious lectures, or the party of FDR that knows how to win & build a progressive majority,' Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) said in a Thursday post on social media platform X. Love Wins! 13 LGBTQ+ TV Couples We're Rooting For in 2025

Here at TVLine, we've always been big 'shippers at heart. What can we say? We just love love. So with another Pride Month officially in full swing, we thought we'd take stock of some LGBTQ+ TV couples currently demanding our attention — as well as our full support. And what a group we've assembled this year, one that includes a pair of ghosts, a few vampires and, yes, even a handful of humans. More from TVLine Glad The Last of Us Spared Dog? Did Rehearsal Give You High Anxiety? Did Survivor 50 Need Fan Input? Vexing Organized Crime Absences? More Qs! The Last of Us Season 3: Is Pedro Pascal Gone for Good? Here's What the EPs Say The Last of Us Finale Kills [Spoiler], Teases Abby's Side of the Story - Plus, Grade It! To be eligible for inclusion in our list, a couple needs to be from a live-action, scripted series that's still airing new episodes. We also limited ourselves to only one couple per show. Read on for a breakdown of 13 LGBTQ+ TV couples we're currently rooting for, arranged alphabetically by show title, then drop a comment with your own additions to the list. Which queer pairings currently have your full attention? The very definition of #CoupleGoals (are people still saying that?), Hen and Karen have been an inspiration, both to the other couples on the show and to the viewers at home, from the moment we met them in Season 1. They've had to fight tooth and nail to keep their growing family intact, with every obstacle making them stronger along the way. Plus, there's simply no denying Aisha Hinds and Tracie Thoms' natural chemistry. — Andy Swift An esteemed Congressman and an in-demand journalist? These two have the potential to become D.C.'s top gay power couple — that is, if they can get their house in order first. Martin may own an array of designer suits, but with all those skeletons in his closet, he barely has anywhere to put them. If Smitty uncovers his husband's truth before Martin reveals it himself, things could get very ugly. — A.S. Criminal Minds over 18 seasons (and counting) has, frankly, not featured much LGBTQ+ romance, so Evolution steering Tara into bisexual territory was monumental. Save for an early-season love scene (a rarity for the crime drama!), this pairing has had little screen time in Season 18, but it's good to know they're going strong — to the point that it may be time to meet the parents! — Matt Mitovich Not unlike the Grinch, Leo Stark's heart has grown several sizes during his time in Salem, and the former grifter is always at his best when he's in a stable relationship. After a string of failed romances, Leo seems to have finally gotten it right with Javi, and we're enjoying this latest version of him. Hey, what could possibly go wrong to screw up this perfect pairing? It's not like we're talking about some kind of soap op… oh, right. — A.S. This flame was well on its way to being rekindled when all hell broke loose in the Season 3 finale — just as Eve got blindsided by Francine's talk of having kids. In the heat of the moment, Eve didn't pivot well (at all), but in the wake of Francine's heroics during the Three Rock blaze, we hope they in fact are back on track. — M.M. Yes, the cute couple played by Colman Domingo and Marco Calvani hit a bit of turbulence in the freshman season of Netflix's vacation comedy. (Danny ignoring his health issues and Claude's hot Italian temper led to a fight where Danny's clothes ended up on the front lawn.) But once you get past all the drama, there's a genuine sweetness to these two, and we loved watching them cuddle together and make up. — Dave Nemetz We #Momelia fans are a patient lot. It's been more than a season since Amelia first asked out the new colleague with whom she sparks so appealingly, and they still haven't so much as kissed. Nevertheless, their mutual respect for and ever-increasing understanding of one another keeps us telling ourselves, 'Maybe the next episode will be the one.' — Charlie Mason In Season 3 of Netflix's butterflies-inducing LGBTQ+ dramedy, the high-school sweethearts' romance was tested like never before — by their cohabitation, by the academic pressure on the former, by the latter's nonbinary journey. Yet as we shippers knew they would, the couple managed to rise to the challenges before them and emerge closer than ever on the other side. — C.M. You want to talk about bringing down the house? When these immortal lovers reunited in a hotel at the end of Season 2, in the midst of a devastating New Orleans storm, the structure quite literally crumbled around them. Louis and Lestat have a love for the ages, and now that their mutual misunderstandings have been cleared up, we're hoping for a fresh start moving forward. — A.S. The two post-apocalyptic teens managed to start a relationship in a) a mushroom apocalypse, b) while in deep grief over someone they both adored, and c) despite the fact that one of them was pregnant by someone else. Talk about finding love in a hopeless place! — Kim Roots There's no telling what the future holds for these two badass warriors — literally, the Paramount+ drama has yet to be renewed for a third season — but after all they went through and barely survived at the close of Season 2, it is one of our most fervent wishes that they found the time for lots of not talking. — M.M. Charley is one of those puppy dog characters to whom you only ever want to see good things happen, so imagine our pleasant surprise when he struck up a romance with pouty potter Yuri in the ghost drama's second season. The chemistry, the kisses, the Ghost reenactment — it was all just so, so good. If they couldn't be their authentic selves when they were alive, at least they can be happy together in the afterlife, right? — A.S. After four long, dry seasons (unless you count tears!), we were beginning to think that Isaac would never find someone to share his life with. But then, just when we least expected it, along came Michael to sweep his former frenemy off his feet. Watching them awkwardly figure out their feelings for one another was an unexpected delight, and that first kiss at the Christmas festival? Come on, now! We're all in with these two. — A.S.
