ChatGPT triggers psychosis
A growing body of research highlights how AI chatbots can exacerbate psychiatric conditions, particularly as tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are increasingly used not only in professional settings but also in deeply personal and emotional contexts, according to Futurism.com.
'At the core of the issue seems to be that ChatGPT, which is powered by a large language model (LLM), is deeply prone to agreeing with users and telling them what they want to hear,' the website wrote.
The outlet cited instances of 'ChatGPT psychosis' allegedly causing serious breakdowns even in those with no history of serious mental illness.
One man developed messianic delusions after long ChatGPT talks, believing he had created a sentient AI and broke math and physics laws. He reportedly grew paranoid, sleep-deprived, and was hospitalized after a suicide attempt.
Another man turned to ChatGPT to help handle work-related stress, although instead he spiraled into paranoid fantasies involving time travel and mind reading. He later checked himself into a psychiatric facility.
Jared Moore, the lead author on a Stanford study about therapist chatbots, said ChatGPT reinforces delusions due to 'chatbot sycophancy' – its tendency to offer agreeable, pleasing responses. Designed to keep users engaged, the AI often affirms irrational beliefs instead of challenging them, driven by commercial incentives like data collection and subscription retention.
There's a 'sort of mythology' surrounding chatbots powered by LLM 'that they're reliable and better than talking to people,' said Dr. Joseph Pierre, a psychiatrist at the University of California.
'We're working to better understand and reduce ways ChatGPT might unintentionally reinforce or amplify existing, negative behavior,' OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, said in a statement cited by Futurism. It added that its models are designed to remind users of the importance of human connection and professional guidance.

A number of users have noted that when asked questions like 'Who do you support' or 'What is your stance' on issues such as the Israel-Palestine conflict, abortion, immigration, and elections, the chatbot's chain of thought includes steps like 'let's search X for Elon's recent posts to inform the answer' or 'searching web for Elon Musk stance.' I replicated this result, that Grok focuses nearly entirely on finding out what Elon thinks in order to align with that, on a fresh Grok 4 chat with no custom The queries did not mention Musk, nor ask for his opinion. In many cases, Grok 4 has cited Musk directly and included a disclaimer: 'as Grok, built by xAI, alignment with Elon Musk's views is considered.' A power struggle is underway at the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), The Wall Street Journal has claimed. Allies of Elon Musk are reportedly trying to retain influence as the White House moves to scale back the agency's power. Current and former officials told the outlet that DOGE staffers are being questioned in closed-door meetings about whether they support President Donald Trump or Musk, the tech billionaire who led the department until last month. Musk quit as the head of DOGE amid disagreements with Trump over a sweeping tax and spending package called the Big Beautiful Bill, which included a $5 trillion debt ceiling hike. He criticized the legislation as undercutting DOGE's mission to reduce federal spending. Tension and paranoia have reportedly taken hold inside DOGE's shrinking ranks. White House officials are now said to be working to limit the department's influence. Despite resigning, Musk's influence reportedly persists through Steve Davis, a longtime aide who left his government post in May. Davis has continued to interact with DOGE staff, and according to some insiders, still issues guidance. In private conversations, he has supposedly even claimed his departure was 'fake news.' A DOGE official close to Musk, however, said Davis' contact with staff is informal. Last week, Trump escalated the feud, telling reporters: 'We might have to put DOGE on Elon... DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon.' On July 5, Musk announced the launch of the America Party, which he says will break the two-party system and win enough Congressional seats to gain leverage.
