176 deaths in Punjab's hooch tragedies in last five years linked to methanol-based spurious liquor
Leading consultant psychiatrist Dr Rana Ranbir Singh said, 'If you study all the past hooch tragedies in the state, the common link is methanol—a cheap variant for ethanol. This chemical is used in different industries. The question now arises how it is diverted from there to these bootleggers, as it is very dangerous for human consumption, resulting in blindness and then death. The government should make some rules and regulations to monitor its supply to industries to stop its diversion.'
'Methanol is a light, colourless organic chemical compound which is poisonous when ingested by humans and is illegally added to alcoholic beverages,' he said, adding that this kind of spurious liquor is generally bought by daily-wagers as it is quite cheap.
In the latest hooch tragedy in the Majithia area of Amritsar district, 23 people have died so far and 10 others were hospitalised after allegedly consuming spurious liquor.
Last year in March, 20 people died in a similar incident in Sangrur—the home district of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. In that case too, methanol-based liquor was manufactured locally.
A senior official said all 18 individuals accused in the Sangrur hooch case are now facing trial before the additional sessions judge in a special court.
The accused have been charged, and the process of recording their testimonies is ongoing. A probe committee of officers was set up following the incident, which studied the reasons behind the thriving illegal liquor business in the state and recommended the creation of a separate wing in the Punjab Police to curb the manufacture and sale of illicit liquor.
In August 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown when liquor vends were closed, a hooch tragedy struck the Tarn Taran, Amritsar and Batala districts, killing over 135 people.
It was one of the worst such incidents in the country and shook the then Congress-led government under Capt Amarinder Singh. The then DGP Dinkar Gupta proposed the introduction of a stringent law—the Punjab Control of Organised Crime Act (PCOCA)—to deal with such cases, but the proposal was later put on the backburner.

Addressing a press conference here, Ashok said the House should also discuss the Congress-led government's failures that cost 11 lives ahead of IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations on Wednesday. 'Three separate inquiries have been ordered – which one is genuine? We demand a judicial probe headed by a sitting High Court judge,' he insisted. Ashok also called for enhanced compensation for the victims' families. 'If the government is truly not at fault, it should give Rs 1 crore per family. As opposition leaders, we will contribute our one month's salary to the families,' he announced. Dismissing the justification for such a grand event, Ashok added, 'Winning a trophy is not new. Other states have won before. But no other CM has ever used such events for cheap publicity.' He accused the state government of flouting police instructions and thereby breaking the law, which led to the stampede. Ashok alleged that the tragedy could have been averted had Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar not been engrossed in a power tussle. 'Instead of mourning the loss of innocent students, they were chasing a trophy. The police had informed the government of a casualty by noon, and yet the programme went on even after eight children had died. This shows how stone-hearted the government is,' he charged. Ashok cited a letter dated June 4, from the Vidhana Soudha police to the Chief Secretary, warning that the programme was being hastily organised, with inadequate staff and serious security concerns. The letter had recommended cancelling the event, yet the government proceeded, he alleged. He further stated that police had clearly instructed against the participation of department staff and their families, but the directive was ignored. 'CCTV deployment was skipped, drones were flown despite prohibition, and the stage – which was to accommodate only 20–30 people – ended up hosting over 200, including 11 players,' he said. Ashok pointed out that while the event was officially listed as a government function, CM Siddaramaiah later disowned it, claiming it was not a government-organised event. Both home minister G Parameshwara and district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao wrongly labelled my son Suhas as a rowdy.I clarify that Suhas was not a rowdy, but worked with Bajrang Dal. Only an NIA investigation can ensure we receive proper justice," she had said. Suhas Shetty Murder Suhas Shetty, a known rowdy sheeter and Hindutva activist, was murdered by an unidentified group on May 1 within the Bajpe police station limits in Mangaluru. He was attacked at around 8:30 pm while he was traveling with five of his associates when their vehicle was intercepted near Kinnipadavu Cross by the attackers. The attackers, around six people, were traveling in a Swift car and a pickup truck. They reportedly attacked Shetty and his group, assaulting him with deadly weapons causing serious injuries. Shetty was the main accused in the high-profile 2022 murder of Mohammed Fazil. Mohammed Fazil was killed by four masked men on July 28, 2022, with Shetty being the prime accused in the case. The then Basvraj Bommai-led BJP government had not granted any compensation to the deceased family. However, the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government had granted a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to Fazil's family in 2023, something that was also offered to three other families that saw members lose lives to communal murders. Hitting out at the government for suspending five police officers, including the then Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda, in connection with the incident, Ashoka said, the BJP stands with the police and will fight for them, as there was no fault on part of the police. The victory celebrations were organised despite police denying permission to it, he alleged. The loss of eleven lives is nothing but a "government sponsored murder". He said those in power including CM and Deputy CM cannot rule the state on the dead bodies of eleven people. "You have no moral right, you have lost it. You are accused in the eyes of law," he added. The Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister behaved like "brand ambassadors" for the RCB, the LoP said, despite deaths the victory celebration events were held. "First death happened at 3:15 pm (on June 4), the victory celebration programme started at 4:30-5 pm, by then seven to eight deaths had the Deputy CM went to the stadium to attend another celebration event, where crackers worth Rs 1 crore were bursted around 6:30-7 pm. After 11 deaths crackers were burst, do you even have humanity?" he asked. Noting that police officials were suspended as they failed to inform the CM and Deputy CM about the deaths, Ashoka said news channels were providing live updates on the incident and deaths, the information were available on mobile phones. "What were your PAs or secretaries or officials doing?" Holding CM and Deputy CM directly responsible, he said the entire government should go, including the Ministers, Chief Secretary and officials. Deaths are the sixth guarantee of this government (after five populist guarantee schemes), Ashoka said, citing the deaths of officials, officials, farmer suicides, meternal deaths. "We have planned to meet the Governor soon demanding the dismissal of the government," he added.
