Fluminense finished second in Group F to Borussia Dortmund, which defeated Ulsan 1-0 in a simultaneous game in Cincinnati. Both Fluminense and Dortmund will await the results of other matches to learn their opponents in the round of 16.
The Sundowns needed a win to advance. They had never won a Club World Cup match before defeating Ulsan in their opener. They then put up a valiant fight in a 4-3 loss to Dortmund.
The Sundowns, the crowd favorite at Hard Rock Stadium, came out with energy, determined not to see their run in the tournament end. They dominated possession (68%) in the opening half and made three shots on goal.
Fluminense's best chance in the half came in the 40th minute on Nonato's attempt from the edge of the box.
Forty-year-old Thiago Silva was on the bench for Fluminense because of muscle soreness. Germán Cano started in his place.
Temperatures in Miami were in the balmy mid-80s, but cooler than in recent days.
Key moment
Fluminense, which only needed the draw to advance, increased the pressure in the second half. Cano nearly scored in the 58th minute when he picked up a pass from Jhon Arias but his right-footed shot hit the right post.
Takeaways
Fluminense joins fellow Brazilian clubs Palmeiras, Botafogo and Flamengo in advancing to the round of 16 at the expanded Club World Cup. Fluminense played to a scoreless draw against Dortmond before defeating Ulsan 4-2 in their first two matches.

'Battle of Seattle' as Inter down nine-man River to advance

Teenage striker Francesco Esposito and Alessandro Bastoni scored the goals to settle a physical contest which saw River finish with nine men. The final whistle was marred by an ugly melee which saw players from both sides clash as they sprinted off the pitch, with missiles being thrown by River's fans at Seattle's Lumen Field Earlier, the 19-year-old Esposito bagged his first goal for Serie A giants Inter with a lovely strike in the 72nd minute to put the Italians 1-0 up. The tall teenage striker collected a pass from Petar Sucic, elegantly lost his marker before drilling a shot into the bottom right-hand corner past River goalkeeper Franco Armani. Bastoni then bagged Inter's second deep into injury time to seal a win which sets up a last 16 meeting against Brazil's Fluminense next Monday. Mexico's Monterrey, 4-0 winners over already-eliminated Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds, finished as runners-up in Group E and will face Borussia Dortmund in the last 16 on July 2. River's campaign ended in disarray, with defender Lucas Martinez Quarta sent off for denial of a goal-scoring opportunity in the 66th minute. Argentina international Gonzalo Montiel then followed his team-mate off the field in injury time after picking up a second yellow card Inter and River Plate had gone into the game with the Group E standings on a knife edge. But after Monterrey swept into an early 3-0 lead against Urawa in Pasadena, the stakes soon became clear in Seattle, where the winner would advance provided the result in California held. After a scrappy first half, Inter began to get on top in the second half against a River side who struggled to create much of note in the final third. Inter striker Lautaro Martinez squandered a golden chance in the 55th minute, shooting straight at Armani after cutting side. The game tilted decisively in Inter's favour in the 65th minute when Martinez Quarta was dismissed for bringing down Henrikh Mkhitaryan as the former Manchester United player went down on goal. The game opened up for Inter after that, Esposito giving the Italians the lead seven minutes later before Bastoni sealed it. Vinicius, Mbappe have to defend: Real Madrid's Alonso

Last season under Carlo Ancelotti Los Blancos failed to win a major trophy and the Italian was at times exasperated with his forward line's unwillingness to work hard enough for the sake of the team as a whole. "What I am certain of is that we need and want everyone to defend -- the 11 players on the pitch have to be involved defensively," Alonso told a news conference ahead of Madrid's Club World Cup clash against RB Salzburg. "They have to get close together, they have to know how we want to press, and without that, things will be very complicated. "Vini, Jude (Bellingham), Fede (Valverde), Kylian, those up front, the defence has to push forward too." Ancelotti said last season that he was not concerned if Mbappe pressed or not and wanted the striker to focus on goalscoring. The 26-year-old netted 43 goals across all competitions in his first season at the Santiago Bernabeu after his move from Paris Saint-Germain. Real Madrid face Austrian side Salzburg in Philadelphia on Thursday, looking to seal top spot in their final Group H match, but will be without Mbappe. The French superstar was not named as part of the squad to take on Salzburg as he continues his recovery from a stomach bug. Mbappe missed the team's first two matches but returned to training on Wednesday. "I was happy to see him on the (training) pitch, it was the first day he's got his boots back on and has been running, he's doing well, but not enough to play tomorrow with the level that we need," said Alonso. "He said it himself when we spoke after training, he prefers to be ready for the last 16, he's in the recovery process, he wasn't perfect for tomorrow." In Madrid's second match, a 3-1 win over Mexican side Pachuca, Brazilian forward Rodrygo was left on the bench, amid speculation he could depart the club this summer. However, Alonso said the Brazilian was still a valuable member of the team. "He's doing well, he's enthusiastic, it was a technical decision (to bench him) the other day, but Rodrygo is still an important player, we will need him in this Club World Cup," said Alonso. "He's a special player and he will have a big role at this tournament." 'Job done': Sundowns coach proud despite Club World Cup exit

"Some teams came here and took nothing but Mamelodi Sundowns leave with a lot -– we took four points, we lost just one game and we drew one game in which it was clear we had the best chances," Cardoso said after the 0-0 draw with Fluminense in Miami. That followed a 1-0 win against Ulsan HD of South Korea and a 4-3 loss to German giants Borussia Dortmund, as the South African champions finished third in Group F. Their tally of four points was one fewer than Fluminense, and three behind group winners Dortmund. "For those who don't know international football so well, I invite them to go and study Fluminense, Dortmund and Ulsan a little, and understand the level Sundowns played at during this Club World Cup," Cardoso added. "When we go out but set such a huge platform, you don't go through but you take a lot, you take prestige, you value your players, you make your club even more well known in the world." He added: "I know we have a strange name but we have a strong capacity. We have been showing good things for many years and now everyone in the world will talk about Mamelodi Sundowns because people like positive emotions." "People like going home having seen an exciting game and we gave amazing emotons to people who like football. "We are not happy, we had a clear objective for this match, but I am very proud of the level my players performed at. "We leave and go home with our heads up because we are much stronger than we were when we came here." Perennial South African champions Sundowns qualified for FIFA's lucrative new tournament on the back of their record over the last four years in African competitions. However, they travelled to the United States reeling after losing to Pyramids of Egypt in the final of the CAF Champions League. Cardoso, though, sees the positives as his club romped to their eighth domestic title in a row and appeared in a first African Champions League final since winning it in 2016. "In the eight months I have been here it has been amazing. We won the championship in South African beating all the records," he said. "We didn't win the final of the Champions League but after (nine) years we were back in the final." He added: "We knew these competitions are very risky because you can do beautiful things and leave with nothing because the other teams are very strong. "We competed until the last minute. It is always possible to do more. But will we sleep in peace tonight? Believe me we will. Job done, recognition obtained."
