KOTA KINABALU: Nazlee Roslee came out on top at the Chocolate Fantasy Runway Challenge (CFRC) 2025, clinching the Best Design Award with a creation inspired by Sabah's Murut heritage and made using chocolate-themed, sustainable materials. The competition, held in conjunction with the Malaysian International Cocoa Fair (MICF) 2025 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Saturday, marked the return of CFRC for its second edition. This year's 'Choco Neo Culture' theme pushed designers to fuse innovation, sustainability, and cultural storytelling in their entries. Organised by the Malaysia Association of Ethical Fashion Designers (MAEFD), the event featured six contestants showcasing designs crafted from unconventional materials. Nazlee, an Immigration officer at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), drew on Murut traditional wear, incorporating resin, layered fabrics, and glue gun techniques into his ensemble. He credited his model Sweet Chin Yee Hiu and makeup artist Noorjana Rikun for their role in realising the vision, calling the project a team effort despite tight preparation time.

Fest promotes unique Tempasuk heritage

KOTA BELUD: The colourful Citrawarna Night was among the highlights of Festival Tempasuk 2025, celebrating the ethnic arts and culture of the Tempasuk community. Held over five days beginning Aug 13, the festival features traditional dances, costumes, food, folk games and cultural performances aimed at promoting the unique heritage of the Tempasuk and Kota Belud areas. Festival Chairperson Datin Vinnie Nursyahirah Abdullah said the event served as a platform to showcase the diversity and richness of local traditions. 'This festival brings together various elements of Tempasuk's arts and culture. Historically, Tempasuk was the original name of Kota Belud, and we are proud to highlight the heritage of communities across this region,' she said after the event at the Tempasuk People's Service Centre Square. Among the evening's highlights were performances by popular local artists, Datuk Francis Landong and Leles Koronob, as well as a cultural showcase by the Pentarama troupe from the Sabah Information Department. The event was officiated by Pantai Dalit Assemblyman and Executive Chairman of Innoprise Corporation Sdn Bhd, Datuk Jasnih Daya. The main attraction was the Citra Budaya Etnik Tempasuk Parade, featuring nine teams, seven representing sub-districts within the Tempasuk constituency, and two invited teams from the organising committee, including the Tobilung ethnic group of Kota Belud. Vinnie said each team competed for five awards - Largest Participation, Best Performance, Best Concept, Most Festive Team and Best Teamwork. 'This is the second time the parade has been held, with the first edition in 2022 under a slightly different name,' she added. She expressed hope that the festival would continue to serve as a platform for the Tempasuk community to preserve and promote their customs and cultural identity, while positioning the constituency as a cultural tourism hub. 'We expect around 5,000 visitors throughout the festival. Google Maps Trekker spotted walking through Bukit Bintang

In addition to maps, Google also offers features such as Street View on both Google Maps and Google Earth, allowing users to see streets and buildings through panoramic images. Most people are aware that these images are usually captured by specially equipped Google Street View cars fitted with 360-degree cameras. However, not many realise that in areas inaccessible to vehicles, the images are collected on foot by individuals carrying portable camera systems. Recently, a video went viral showing a man walking around Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur carrying a large backpack camera system for Google Maps. The video, uploaded on TikTok by @wbbb_ttt, showed the man crossing pedestrian walkways and using an overhead bridge, attracting the attention of passers-by. The TikTok user remarked that the backpack looked heavy but admitted being excited at the thought of possibly appearing on Street View. Google refers to the portable system as the Trekker, a backpack-mounted 360-degree camera designed to capture narrow streets, pedestrian areas, and other locations only accessible on foot. Social media users responded with a mix of amusement and curiosity, with some joking that it looked like a fun job, while others asked how they could apply to be a Trekker. Sabah Fest brings North Borneo's culture to Singapore

SINGAPORE: The sights and sounds of Sabah came alive at Marina Square on Saturday as the Sabah Fest Singapore Edition 2025 showcased North Borneo's culture through music, dance, food, and heritage. Visitors enjoyed traditional performances, food products, and crafts that reflected the state's diverse ethnic traditions. For Sabahans living in Singapore, the event was a chance to reconnect with their roots, while Singaporeans were introduced to Sabah's cultural richness. Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai and Malaysian High Commissioner to Singapore Datuk Indera Azfar Mohd Mustafa jointly launched the celebration.
