Breastfeeding Pods: Symbol Of Changing Times For Nursing Mothers In Sikkim
A large number of women of Sikkim are heaving a sigh of relief as they are now able to breastfeed their babies in the comfort of a clean, secure private space in crowded public places, thanks to an effort of the state government.
The Women, Child, Senior Citizens & Persons with Disabilities Welfare and Development Department has set up six breastfeeding pods at large markets in five of the total six districts in the Himalayan state, and plans to establish similar facilities in the remaining one.
Another pod, operated by the Gangtok district administration, is functional in the state capital.
The latest pod, installed by the department, was inaugurated at Pakyong Bazar (market) in the headquarters town in Pakyong district on July 3, in the presence of a number of women who came to see the facility.
"Now, such pods are operational in Gangtok, Mangan, Namchi, Soreng, Rangpo and Pakyong towns. We will set up another breastfeeding pod in the headquarters of Gyalshing district," the department's Joint Director Pema Lhamu told PTI.
Breastfeeding pods are innovative, private spaces designed to support nursing mothers in public areas and workplaces. These facilities provide them with a comfortable and secure environment to breastfeed.
This is in sharp contrast with the earlier times when lactating mothers needed to take refuge in places like narrow bylanes or public toilets to feed their babies.
The administration also has plans to install more pods in all district headquarters and sub-divisional towns in the state in the coming days, Lhamu said.
The department's joint director shared a pivotal moment that sparked the initiative in Sikkim.
"We had a report from a market in Mangan district where a lady was using bottled milk to feed her child. When asked by a senior department official why she was using bottled milk, she replied that it was awkward and embarrassing to feed babies in public. This interaction led us to start working on addressing this issue in 2024," the official said.
The department has plans to install more breastfeeding pods in all district headquarters and subdivision towns within the state in the coming days, Lhamu said.
She also said that breastfeeding rooms are also operational in all district hospitals, besides a pod at Old STNM Hospital in the state capital Gangtok.
"There are also specialised nurses known as Breast Feeding Angels in all district hospitals and STNM Hospital where these nurses specifically cater to lactating mothers. We plan to take it further with similar initiatives in primary health centres and dispensaries across the state," said the joint director.
Besides the pods run by the Women, Child, Senior Citizens & Persons with Disabilities Welfare and Development Department, one is operated by the district administration in MG Marg, where the famous Gangtok Mall is located and thronged by both locals and tourists.
This breastfeeding pod was funded by the CSR arm of a pharmaceutical company.
"We had come for an outing with family at MG Marg last week, and my six-month-old baby needed to be fed. It was an embarrassing situation. My cousin told me about a pod for moms. We went to that in Old STNM Hospital near MG Marg. It was so clean and comfortable," Lhaden Doma, a resident of Gangtok, said, thanking the government.
Along with this pod, there are two others in the vicinity of MG Marg for locals as well as tourists to use the facilities.
Roshni Tamang, a mother of two children, including a four-month-old baby, said that she is a hawker in Pakyong market and the new pod came as a boon for lactating mothers like her.
"The pod is near the hawkers' market. Two more mothers like me run stalls there, and we are using this facility daily. The convenience it has provided us is commendable," she told PTI.
Women in Sikkim are actively involved in running shops and businesses.
Kanchen Gurung, an elderly woman of Singtam in Gangtok district, welcomed the initiative.
"In our time, we did not have such places. Babies needed to be fed, and we either used to go between buildings or to public toilets. This is what moving with time means," said Gurung, a grandmother of nine.

After 7 years, red panda cubs born in Sikkim zoo
The birth of red panda cubs after a gap of seven years has given a fresh lease of life to a conservation programme at the Himalayan Zoological Park near Sikkim's capital, Gangtok. Parents Lucky-II and Mirak gave birth to two cubs on June 15, but the park authorities announced the 'significant milestone' on Friday (August 1, 2025). The cubs form the pair's first litter together. 'This birth is especially heartening as it comes after a difficult seven-year period in the history of the Red Panda Conservation Programme, initiated in 1997. There were no successful births in these seven years due to challenges such as two outbreaks of canine distemper that nearly decimated the captive red panda population,' the park's Director, Sangay Gyatso, said. Canine distemper is a highly contagious, potentially fatal viral disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems of dogs and other carnivores. Mr Gyatso said the park's red panda (Ailurus fulgens) breeding programme began with Preeti, a female from Rotterdam Zoo in the Netherlands and Jugal from Darjeeling's Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park. 'Their successful breeding laid the foundation for a thriving genetic lineage. In 2005, the programme was further strengthened with the inclusion of a wild-origin pair, Lucky and Ram, helping expand and diversify the genetic pool,' he said. All red pandas born under this programme are tracked through national and international studbooks to ensure healthy genetic variability and global breeding cooperation, the park authorities stated. Rare male activity Red pandas typically breed in the winter months between November and January. After a gestation period of about five months, females give birth between June and August in warm, hidden nests. The park officials said that Mirak was observed participating in nest-building with Lucky-II, a rare instance of male involvement in such an activity. Red panda males generally do not engage in cub-rearing. The cubs will be raised away from the public eye until they are old enough for viewing, the officials said. 'These new cubs will stay with their mother for over a year, reaching full size by 12 months and becoming sexually mature by 18 months. Their health and compatibility will then be assessed as part of future breeding strategies,' Mr Gyatso said. 'The birth of these cubs is a beacon of hope for the conservation of the endangered in Sikkim and highlights the resilience of the programme and its dedicated team,' he said. Located at Bulbuley, 3 km from Gangtok, the 205-hectare Himalayan Zoological Park is at an average elevation of 1,780 metres. Apart from the red panda, the park houses the snow leopard, Himalayan palm civet, monal (pheasant), Himalayan black bear, and crimson-horned pheasant.

Tripura govt to introduce superspeciality courses in AGMC: CM
Agartala, Aug 1(PTI) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday said the state government is contemplating introducing superspeciality courses in Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC). At present, the government-run medical college offers MBBS and PG courses in different disciplines. Addressing the 21st foundation day of AGMC, the chief minister said the government is planning to introduce superspeciality courses in the medical college after successfully running of PG courses in different disciplines. Laying emphasis on hospital management, Saha said the government will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AIIMS, New Delhi, to impart training on hospital management. 'On my request, a team from AIIMS, New Delhi, headed by its Director N Srinivas visited GBP hospital and AGMC on how to improve the service at the government's health facility. We have received a report from the team. The government will soon sign an MoU with AIIMS, New Delhi, to impart training to our doctors on hospital management", he said. Saha said three kidney transplants have been done successfully at the GBP hospital and AGMC. 'Now, we are planning to introduce liver transplant and heart transplant at the hospital so that the people don't need to go outside the state for better treatment", he said. The chief minister also said the government has decided to establish a dedicated eye hospital with 100-bed capacity at Khejurbagan in Agartala. 'The site for the proposed eye hospital with all modern facilities has already been selected, and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) has almost been completed. Himachal govt launches face authentication in public distribution system
Last Updated: Shimla, Aug 1 (PTI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena on Friday launched the face authentication in public distribution system, emphasising the importance of achieving hundred per cent Aadhaar saturation across the state. He was chairing a review meeting with all departmental heads of the state government and the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) here, an official statement said. During the meeting, officials informed that that Himachal Pradesh is leading the country in terms of Aadhaar generation of the children aged below five. The national average is 39 per cent whereas the state has achieved 56 per cent coverage. According to the statement, Deputy Director General (UIDAI) Dhiraj Sarin was also present in the meeting. Himachal Pradesh has made significant progress over the last three months and the pendency of mandatory biometric update has decreased from 5.5 lakh to 4.75 lakh, the statement added. In the meeting it was also notified that the department of digital technology and governance in collaboration with the education department has arranged multiple camps in the schools to cover the mandatory biometric updates. The chief secretary directed to cover private schools as well to reduce the pendency of mandatory biometric update, which were to be carried out on attaining the ages of five and 15 years. Saxena further directed to deploy Aadhaar kits at immunisation centres to cover Aadhaar enrolment of zero to five age group. The health department, department of digital technology and governance and India Post Payment Bank (IPPB) would facilitate Aadhaar enrolment for children below five years, ensuring their complete coverage. He also directed all the departments to ensure Aadhaar based authentication of beneficiaries for various services and digitisation of documents released by the state government.
