
KGMU performs partial knee replacement using microplasty technique

The microplasty targets only the damaged portion of the knee, preserving healthy tissue and bone. Based on modern computer navigation, it allows for precise alignment and faster recovery with minimal cuts and reduced blood loss.
The surgery was conducted by senior orthopaedic surgeon Prof Shailendra Singh on a 52-year-old woman from Sultanpur earlier this week. The patient was operated on under the Ayushman scheme of the govt.
Prof Shailendra Singh said, "This is the future of knee surgery. Instead of replacing the entire joint, we now fix only the damaged part. Recovery is faster, pain is less, and the results are long-lasting." It will cost around Rs 80,000-Rs 90,000.
He added that patients can often begin walking within 24 to 48 hours after surgery.
"For carefully selected individuals, implants may last over 15 years, with many returning to regular physical activity or sports in a short time," he said.
This technique is especially suited for individuals with localised medial compartment osteoarthritis, intact ligaments and stable joints—typically those who remain active even beyond the age of 40.
The surgery involved a small incision of around 6-8 cm, guided instrumentation for accurate placement and the use of the Oxford Knee implant—a proven device developed by Oxford University in partnership with Zimmer Biomet.

The implant's hallmark is a mobile bearing design that mimics natural knee movement and allows most patients to begin walking within 24 to 48 hours.
HoD orthopaedics department Prof Ashish Kumar said: "KGMU plans to expand the use of microplasty as a preferred treatment option in early-stage osteoarthritis, particularly among younger, active individuals. The university is also preparing to organise workshops and clinical sessions to train surgeons in this advancing technique."
The surgery team included anaesthesiologists Prof Vineeta Singh and Prof Manoj Chaurasia, as well as orthopaedic colleagues Prof Ravindra Mohan, Dr Deepak Chawda and Dr Ankur Maan.

Under fire over patient deaths, Punjab invites firms to maintain oxygen plants
1 2 Chandigarh: Under fire after three patients died at the trauma ward of Jalandhar civil hospital due to a failure in oxygen supply system, Punjab govt has initiated corrective measures to revive and maintain oxygen generation infrastructure. After the tragedy in Jalandhar, Punjab Health Systems Corporation (PHSC) had sought details on the operational status of pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and liquid medical oxygen (LMO) plants. Data shared by district health authorities revealed that 35 PSA plants, of varying capacities, are non-functional at present. These include facilities at major district hospitals in Jalandhar, Fazilka, Sangrur, Faridkot, Mohali, and Kapurthala, as well as sub-divisional and community health centres in Patiala, Amritsar, Ropar, Bathinda, and Ferozepur. To address this, PHSC has decided to engage a firm for the maintenance of 38 PSA oxygen plants and 33 medical gas pipeline systems (MGPS) in public hospitals. A tender for a three-year contract has been floated, with an estimated total value of PSA and LMO plants pegged at Rs 30 crore. For uninterrupted oxygen availability, the selected firm will be required to set up a 24x7 centralised call centre, equipped with IVRS-based multilingual support in English, Hindi, and Punjabi, to log and respond to breakdown complaints from hospitals. As per the contract, all fault calls must be addressed within an hour, with on-site repairs carried out by trained and safety-compliant personnel. The firm must also develop a medical oxygen management dashboard, integrated with Internet of Things (IoT) devices installed in all PSA plants under maintenance. The dashboard will display live operational status, real-time staffing data, and monthly breakdown trends, while also functioning as a grievance redressal platform and oxygen cylinder stock tracker. Additionally, the dashboard will interface with PHSC's Biomedical Equipment Maintenance Management Programme (BEMMP) to monitor the functionality of other oxygen-related infrastructure, such as concentrators. The contractor must ensure consistent oxygen pressure of 4–5 bars across all critical delivery points, conduct quarterly preventive maintenance or servicing after every 3,000 hours of operation, and carry out annual calibration of gauges, analysers, and control panels. Oxygen purity must be verified yearly by NABL-accredited laboratories. The firm will also be required to deploy trained technicians in each district, equipped with standard safety gear, uniforms, and ID cards, and to undertake repairs, manifold systems, and electrical components. A standby mechanism must be in place for any major breakdown lasting more than 48 hours. Penalties ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 per day per unit will be imposed for delays in response or failure to attend breakdown calls. Medisep Phase-II gets cabinet nod, basic cover to be 5 lakh
Thiruvananthapuram: Cabinet granted approval for second phase of medical insurance scheme (Medisep) for state govt employees and pensioners. In the second phase, basic insurance coverage will increase from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. Over 2,100 treatment procedures for 41 specialty treatments will be included in the basic treatment package. In Medisep first phase, two treatments that were included in the catastrophic package (Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy with defibrillator – Rs 6 lakh, ICD dual chamber – Rs 5 lakh) were excluded. These will now be added to the additional package. Knee and hip replacement surgeries will be included in the basic benefit package. The insurance scheme will also have 10 critical/organ transplant treatment packages. The insurance company must set aside a corpus fund of Rs 40 crore for two years. Room rent will be allowed up to 1% (Rs 5,000/day) of basic insurance coverage. In govt hospitals, pay ward rent will be provided up to Rs 2,000 per day. Employees and pensioners of various public sector institutions, boards, corporations, autonomous institutions and cooperative sector in state, not receiving ESI benefits, have received in-principle approval to be included in Medisep second phase. The policy period has been reduced from the current three years to two years. There will be an increase in premiums and package rates in the second year. Only public sector insurance companies that achieved technical qualification in Medisep first phase will be eligible to participate in the tendering process for second phase. The existing provision for reimbursement of emergency treatments in non-empanelled hospitals will include 10 additional treatments along with the current three treatments (heart attack, stroke and road accident). One-time registration on insurance portal will be allowed for day-care procedures like dialysis and chemotherapy that require continuous treatment. Approval will be given by combining surgical and medical packages simultaneously. Pre- and post-hospitalisation expenses will be available for three and five days, respectively. A three-tier grievance redressal system will be implemented at the district, state and appellate authority levels. A QR code system will be included on Medisep card to quickly access beneficiary information. The insurance company must prepare a standard operating procedure to take strict action against hospitals deviating from the contract. The services of clinical establishment authority will also be utilised to control exploitation such as overcharging by private hospitals. Recall time for substandard drugs down from 30 to 2 days now
Bengaluru: Digitisation of the drug recall process in the state has reduced the time taken to withdraw substandard medicines from the market from 30 days to two now. In July, 67 drug samples were declared substandard, and drugs worth Rs 40.5 lakh were withdrawn in just two days, food safety and drug administration officials said. "In the past, they were just sending an ink-signed copy by post to far-off places. Thereafter, it would take three to four days again for processing. This led to delays in the recall process and substandard drugs would permeate the market by then. With new software in place, this recall is now possible within two days," food safety and drug administration commissioner Srinivas K told TOI. If found not of standard quality (NSQ), a report was generated on the XLN DCD website. The report was printed out and sent by post to the drugs controller and the district investigating official where the sample was drawn. From there on, the district investigating officer would send a letter to the rest of the district and other districts where this drug was distributed, in writing. The stock recall would take a month because of this lengthy process." Now, a major part of this process has been digitised. "The moment NSQ is declared, the investigating officer will e-sign the document (which is also valid in court). All stakeholders get a message from the XLN DCD portal within 2-3 hours of a drug being declared NSQ on their mobile numbers. The investigating officer then issues the notice, including to distributors concerned, via email and post. This email is sent within 48 hours. Officers can download the copy test report from the XNDLS portal. With this, NSQ stocks worth up to Rs 48 lakh were recalled in June," he added. This information is also sent to drugs controllers of other states for necessary action and recall of substandard drugs, thereby preventing NSQ drugs from reaching the public, the officer added. BOX Notices issued to street vendors, bus stand stalls for lapses Of 1,557 street vendors across the state inspected by the health department for food safety, quality, and hygiene in July, as many as 406 were issued notices for various lapses and fines amounting to Rs 44,500 were imposed on the spot. Training on hygiene and food quality was imparted to 1,240 food vendors. The department also issued notices to 206 of the 889 food stalls inspected at 186 bus stands across the state and imposed fines of Rs 55,000. As many as 99 food samples were sent to the laboratory for analysis. Notices were also issued to 190 hotels/restaurants out of 736 checked and fines of Rs 21,500 were imposed. The department also submitted 291 drinking water samples to the laboratory for analysis.
