NBA announces prime time showdown between Celtics and Pistons on MLK Day

USA Today13 hours ago
The Boston Celtics are used to the spotlight, but they might be more in the dark next season with a potential down year on the horizon. The NBA's early 2025-26 schedule release confirmed that, as the Celtics won't play on opening night or have a Christmas Day game for the first time in a decade.
The most marquee matchup on the books for them at the moment is a Martin Luther King Jr. Day contest with the Detroit Pistons. The Eastern Conference showdown tips off at 8 p.m. (ET) at Little Caesar's Arena and will air on Peacock and NBC. This marks the fifth year in a row that the Celtics have played on the January holiday, meanwhile, the Pistons haven't hosted a game on MLK Day since 2018.
The Celtics and Pistons find themselves on different paths heading into the 2025-26 season. Boston will have to overcome a devastating injury to its go-to guy, Jayson Tatum, and make sense of a retooled roster. Conversely, Detroit will enter the regular season with more optimism than usual since the East is relatively up for grabs and Pistons star guard Cade Cunningham is healthy and fresh off his first All-Star appearance.
The rest of the Celtics' schedule remains a mystery, yet the entirety of the upcoming slate should be released by the end of the week.

Boston Celtics sign coach Joe Mazzulla to contract extension

Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The Boston Celtics signed coach Joe Mazzulla to a multi-year contract extension, the team announced Friday. Mazzulla went 182-64 over his first three seasons. "We are very excited that Joe has agreed to extend with the Celtics," Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said in a news release. "He understands the job and has a passion for the Celtics that is only rivaled by our most die-hard fans. "He's worked hard and accomplished amazing things in his first three years as a head coach -- including averaging over 60 wins per season and winning the 2024 NBA Championship. Joe is a gifted leader who brings a consistent commitment to learning, improving, and maximizing each day we get to compete for the Boston Celtics." Mazzulla, 37, led the Celtics to a 61-21 record and No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference last season. They lost to the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals, ending their shot at a title defense. "This is truly a blessing," Mazzulla said. "I would not be here without my faith, my wife, and my children. We are thankful for the partnership with our ownership groups, Brad Stevens' mentorship, and the support of our staff. "Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach the past three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston." The Celtics will face the Memphis Grizzlies in their preseason opener Oct. 8 in Memphis.

Another early-season Lakers game has been leaked

The full NBA schedule for the 2025-26 season will be released this Thursday, Aug. 14. In the meantime, there have been a few leaks as far as marquee matchups that will be on the schedule. The Los Angeles Lakers will be hosting Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors in their first regular-season game, which will be on Oct. 21. Then, on Christmas Day, they will face Kevin Durant and the Houston Rockets at Arena. Sean Cunningham, a reporter for KCRA, Sacramento's NBC affiliate, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the Lakers will visit the Sacramento Kings on Sunday, Oct. 26. The Kings have mostly been a bad or mediocre team for almost two decades, although they have improved over the last three seasons. They made major changes dating back to last summer, starting with their acquisition of veteran wing DeMar DeRozan and that three-team trade in February that sent De'Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs while netting them Zach LaVine. They likely won't make the playoffs or perhaps even the play-in tournament this coming season. However, with studs such as DeRozan, LaVine and Domantas Sabonis, as well as former Laker guards Malik Monk and Dennis Schroder, the Kings are a team the Lakers cannot ever take lightly.
