Top of the Morning: Red Sox beat sloppy Astros 6-1 to complete series sweep
Trevor Story and Ceddanne Rafaela had consecutive RBI singles in a six-run fourth inning filled with five Houston mistakes, Lucas Giolito pitched a season-high eight stellar innings, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Astros 6-1 on Sunday to complete a series sweep.
Connor Wong added a sacrifice fly and Wilyer Abreu was credited with a sacrifice on a safety squeeze for an RBI during the inning, sending Boston to its third straight win over the AL West leaders and fourth in a row overall.
Giolito (8-2) gave up the run on three hits with four strikeouts and a walk, eclipsing his previous season-high innings of 7 2/3 on July 4.
Carlos Correa, acquired from Minnesota at the trade deadline, hit a homer for Houston, which has lost eight of 10.
The game's first pitch was 11:38 a.m. EDT, the third time this season the Red Sox began a game in the morning. The others: their annual Patriots' Day game when they beat the White Sox and the Independence Day victory at the Nationals.
Framber Valdez (11-5) gave up six runs, four earned, over six innings, ending his personal 10-game winning streak. He entered 10-0 with a 1.84 ERA in his previous 14 starts.
Key moment During the fourth, Houston missed a cutoff on Story's run-scoring single, Valdez had a wild pitch, balked home a run and had Abreu's bunt go under his glove for an error. Yainer Diaz had a passed ball.

Yesterday, while listening to the "Kevin Sheehan Show" on Team 980 in Washington, D.C., a male caller proclaimed to Sheehan that he predicted before the 2024 season that the Commanders would contend for the division title. Sheehan didn't challenge the caller, but of course, the fact that he didn't challenge the caller doesn't mean he entirely bought what the caller was proclaiming. You see, the Commanders were coming off an absolutely horrendous 4-13 2023 season, marked by a losing streak of eight games in a row, several of which were embarrassing losses, as they were completely annihilated and failed to show any competitive spirit. The Commanders then hired a coach, Dan Quinn, whom most of the fan base tweeting on Twitter and calling in to DMV sports radio did not readily accept. It's humorous how some in the fan base are so typical, rewriting history so that they are the heroes, the knowledgeable ones, while the rest of us were hoping the Commanders might improve in 2024 to be around .500 and be competitive. Many NFL shows and analysts were all so convinced Caleb Williams was the real prize over Jayden Daniels. Williams was so good in their minds that the Chicago Bears front office did not even interview Daniels in the process. There was no need; they had the first pick, and it was a no-brainer in their infinite wisdom. Caleb Williams was the hands-down quarterback that should be taken with the first selection of the 2024 NFL draft. Thank you to the Chicago Bears front office of 2024! Consequently, the Commanders took Daniels with the second pick, and much of the talk was whether Daniels was too skinny, too frail to endure the NFL brutality of a regular season. The first preseason game came upon us, and the Commanders were the visitors, playing against the Jets. On their very first series, the very first set of downs, Daniels came to the line on a 3rd & 6 on the Washington 33-yard line. The play came in from OC Kliff Kingsbury, and Daniels was to throw a screen pass. When Daniels broke the huddle and reached the line of scrimmage, he felt he should audible into another play he liked better for the situation. So he changed the call into what he desired, took the snap, dropped back, had Dyami Brown run a deep go pattern, and connected with Brown for a 42-yard gain! His first third-down in his first preseason game, and Daniels audibled out of what Kingsbury wanted—and pulled it off! When guard Sam Cosmi was interviewed on the sideline moments later in the first half, he revealed to the viewing audience that Daniels had audibiled out of the play call of Kingsbury to the go route for Brown. Cosmi then said somewhat prophetically, "So, I think everybody should be very excited, just from that little sneak peek right there. I know I am. I know the guys are fired up. I think we got a dude back there." Cosmi knew; he knew very early what possibilities were there for Daniels in his first season. He knew much more than anyone in the fan base, and he put it out there after only one offensive possession, one which witnessed an audible for a 42-yard gain and a successive touchdown drive. Tom Brady statue will be unveiled by New England Patriots Friday. Here's how to watch.
The Tom Brady statue outside Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts will finally be unveiled Friday by the New England Patriots. Owner Robert Kraft will reveal the 12-foot statue in a 15-to-20-minute ceremony with Brady before the Patriots first pre-season game against the Washington Commanders. Brady is the first player in Patriots history to have a statue at the stadium in his honor. In an interview last week, Kraft said Brady has not seen the statue yet. The ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. at Patriot Place Plaza, next to the team's Hall of Fame. You can watch it live on WBZ-TV before the broadcast of the Patriots-Commanders game. It will also be streamed on the Patriots official website. Parking lots will open at 3:30 p.m. and gates at the stadium will open early at 5 p.m. so fans with tickets can see both the ceremony and game in person. The Patriots also said there will be "optimal viewing" of the ceremony on the video boards inside Gillette Stadium. Kraft and the Patriots had hoped to unveil the statue last year, but Brady's NFL broadcasting season with FOX never brought him to Foxboro, so the statue was put in storage and the ceremony was moved to 2025. The Patriots retired Brady's number 12 in June 2024. He retired after the 2022 season after winning six Super Bowls with the Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brady was drafted in by the Patriots in 2000 in the sixth round and took over as the starter from Drew Bledsoe in the 2001 season. He won three NFL MVP awards and five Super Bowl MVPs in his career. He turned 48 on Sunday, August 3.

Nick and Terry Saban's charity donates over $775K to nonprofit groups
Tuscaloosa-area and statewide nonprofit organizations received a total of nearly $775,000 during the annual Nick's Kids Foundation luncheon held Aug. 5 in the north zone at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Nick Saban said the annual luncheon is an event that he eagerly looks forward to. He also discussed the significance of the foundation and its mission to help kids and the community. "This is my favorite day of the year," said Saban, who retired in January 2024 after 17 seasons as the University of Alabama's football coach and now works as a commentator on ESPN's College Gameday. He also serves as an adviser to the UA athletic department and has an office on the Tuscaloosa campus. Saban also expressed pride in the legacy he and Terry Saban are leaving through Nick's Kids. He also mentioned other projects like the Saban Center, an interactive learning hub that is expected to open in 2027. "It's going to be our legacy, Terry and I's legacy. Because 25 years from now, you guys will forget about how many games we won, how many championships we won and all that, but we're going to have a children's learning center that's going to be our legacy in this community for many, many years to come," he said. The Nick's Kids Foundation is the official charity of Saban and his wife, Terry. The foundation focuses on causes that benefit children, families, teachers and students. During the event, guests ate lunch catered by Full Moon BBQ and had the opportunity to get autographs from current Alabama football players. Big Al, UA's elephant mascot, and University of Alabama cheerleaders were also on hand. Nick and Terry Saban mingled in the crowd for meet-and-greets, photos and autographs. During this year's event, Abbie Drummond was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to the community. One project highlighted was the Heman Drummond Center for Innovation, which broke ground in May in Jasper. The 120,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility will serve 2,100 students and is designed to transform how high school students prepare for future careers. Drummond expressed gratitude for the award. She also spoke highly of her close relationship with Nick and Terry Saban. "Our friendship has meant so much to my family ... We are game-changers," said Drummond as she accepted her award. LuLu Gribbin received the Bigger than the Game Award for her resilience after she was attacked by a shark in 2024. She lost her left hand and right leg after the shark attack in the ocean waters near Walton County, Florida. In the attack, Gribbin lost her left hand and right leg. The Mountain Brook teenager said she spent over three months in the hospital and had to re-learn daily tasks, such as how to brush her teeth and, put on clothes. She also had to re-learn how to walk again. Gribbin said she was grateful for the award and that she admires Nick Saban's process of taking small steps to achieve big goals, and she encourages others to do the same. "Because it doesn't matter that I have one leg and one arm that doesn't define who I am, it's who I am on the inside. And I want all of y'all to know that it's who you are on the inside that defines who you are," Gribbin said. "I'm so honored to be the recipient of this award, and I'm so blessed. And I would like to thank you all for choosing me," she said. The Nick's Kids Foundation has been involved with multiple community projects, including the Saban Center and the building of at least Habitat for Humanity homes. Other beneficiaries of the foundation include the Tuscaloosa All-Inclusive Playground and the welding and multipurpose facility at the Tuscaloosa County Juvenile Detention Center and more. Through the years, the foundation has donated nearly $16 million to the community, according to a news release.
