BBC Breakfast host makes Live Aid plea after 'spine-tingling' update

Daily Mirror13-07-2025
BBC Breakfast's Rachel Burden made an on-air appeal, asking viewers to get in touch following a nostalgic Live Aid clip from the iconic event over four decades ago.
The "spine-tingling" footage featured a montage of the historic day on July 13, 1985, at Wembley Stadium, where fans who managed to secure a ticket to Bob Geldof's philanthropic concert would have shelled out £25 each, with £20 going to charity.
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the star-studded lineup that included Bob Geldof, Status Quo, Bono, Tony Hadley, and other '80s icons sharing the stage for the first time, BBC spoke with individuals who witnessed the spectacle in person.
Introducing the special segment, Rachel remarked: "Now I wonder if you remember what happened on this day in 1985 when the world's biggest stars came together for what would become one of the biggest gigs in pop music history Live Aid."
She continued, outlining the purpose of the monumental concert: "The aim of the transatlantic event was to raise funds for those affected by the Ethiopian famine that claimed the lives of more than a million people. 40 years later, our reporter Piers Hob Cable has been hearing from some of those people involved," reports the Express.
Attendees reminisced, with one calling it "the best day of my life" and another recounting the event as "it was spine-tingling" from beginning to end.
Sue Goddard was overwhelmed by the experience, saying: "It was absolutely incredible and I have to say I had shivers up my spine. It was incredible."
Tony Hadley shared a similarly thrilling memory, describing a "spine-tingling moment" as he watched Status Quo open before him with their anthem Rocking All Over The World, thinking: "Wow this is really happening."
Elaine Hills recounted an unforgettable and life-changing incident when Bono leapt into the audience and chose her from the sea of fans to accompany him on stage. Seizing the moment, Elaine didn't hesitate to take the opportunity, despite the significant risk of being caught by her mum, whom she had assured she wouldn't attend the concert.
Eventually, word reached Elaine's mother that not only had she been at the concert, but she had also joined U2's frontman Bono on stage, which initially did not sit well with her.
Nonetheless, Elaine shared that her mum came around in the end and they were able to share a smile about it.
Elaine reflected: "She told me she was proud of me". After hearing these personal accounts of the iconic concert, BBC Breakfast returned to the studio where host Rachel was eager to hear more stories from those who were there.
Back in the studio, Rachel expressed her excitement: "Wow, and you can watch the three part documentary Live Aid at 40 When Rock 'n' Roll Took on the World."
The presenter also recommended: "It's brilliant actually, I've seen the first part, it's on iPlayer right now. There's also a Radio 2 special called Live Aid the Fans Story which is available on BBC Sounds."
In a heartfelt appeal to the audience, she added: "And we'd love to hear from you, your memories of that day."
As contact details appeared on screen for viewers to respond, Rachel went on: "Maybe you were there? Do you remember watching it at home?"
She encouraged viewers: "Do get in touch in all the usual ways on screen right now, we'd love to hear from you."

Now, the boxing hunk has confessed that he has his eyes on more TV shows in the future but he's already had to turn some down due to his busy schedule. Confessing that he was considering learning how to dance for the BBC, Amir said: "I have been asked to do Strictly Come Dancing so maybe I would do that." But it is bad news for another BBC show as the boxing pro confirmed that he'd turned down under-fire Celebrity MasterChef after being unable to commit to the filming. The programme has been in the spotlight after both its hosts Gregg Wallace and John Torode were forced out of the programme following findings in an investigation - first sparked amid allegations of inappropriate behaviour from host Gregg during his time on the programme. Amir added: "I have been asked to do Celebrity MasterChef recently, but I couldn't do the filming this year. "There are a lot of shows but it's hard to get the time. At the same time, I like doing shows." Amir starred in his own reality series, Big in Bolton, on the BBC alongside his wife Faryal and has now revealed that he is a big fan of starring on such programmes for a key reason. He said: "People get to see the real side of me and who you are. Let's see what happens but I am always down for doing things but only the top shows. "I've done a lot of the top shows like I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here twice and in my opinion it's the biggest show out there, it is massive." People started fights in cafes but terrifying gunpoint robbery was last straw, I had to leave UK, says Amir Khan Amir married his wife Faryal in New York in 2013 before returning to Bolton for a traditional Islamic wedding in front of a reported 4000 guests. The couple share two daughters together. However, their marriage has been plagued by split rumours - including a brief period where they called it quits in 2017 as well as a sex tape scandal. Last year, Amir spent more than £130,000 on a new Mercedes G Wagon for his long-suffering wife after being caught out yet again with a sexting scandal. The couple were reportedly "on the rocks" following a sexting scandal which saw the former boxing champ meet a woman for hotel sex over a period of four months. He had demanded "no holds barred" sex from the woman last year before the fling escalated. His wife found out about the betrayal before calling the woman and threatening to out her. 6 Amir has become one of boxing's most popular stars ever Credit: Getty 6 The star has also turned to TV including two appearances on I'm A Celeb Credit: Rex Features 6 Amir proved a talking point during his times in the jungle Credit: Rex Features

Naked Ozzy Osbourne fought burglar in 'headlock' as brazen thief broke into home

Ozzy Osbourne and Sharon Osbourne took part in a press conference back in 2004 in which they spoke about two men having burgled at their home in Buckinghamshire The late Ozzy Osbourne once confronted a brazen burglar who broke into his home while Sharon slept. The singer-songwriter was said to have come face-to-face with the masked intruder in the middle of the night before they made off with jewellery. ‌ Ozzy, who died, aged 76, yesterday, and his wife Sharon Osbourne, now 72, were reportedly asleep when two men broke into their home in Buckinghamshire in 2004. They were said to have fled with jewellery worth an estimated £1 million, and the incident led to a police appeal involving the couple. ‌ ‌ It was reported at the time that the burglary took place after Ozzy and Sharon returned home from a birthday party in London for Sir Elton John 's husband, David Furnish. They were said to have been asleep when the intruders entered their home. Ozzy stumbled into one of the burglars when he got up to use the bathroom at around 4am. The Black Sabbath legend, who was reportedly naked at the time, was then said to have held the assailant in a headlock before they fled by jumping from a first-floor window. ‌ It was suggested that the intruders had bypassed a security system at the home. They were said to have got in through the first floor and went through various rooms before making off with a "substantial" haul of jewellery. The haul was said to have included a 10 carat diamond ring given to Sharon two years prior when she renewed her wedding vows with Ozzy. Insurers reportedly put up a £100,000 reward over the stolen items, thought to be worth £1 million. During a press conference, Ozzy said: "When I had a go at the assailant, as I said earlier on, I acted purely on impulse. In hindsight, it could've been a lot worse. I could have been like George Harrison [who was once stabbed by an intruder]. I could have been badly injured or shot or anything." ‌ Ozzy said that things could have "got really ugly". As reported in footage from the time shared by ITN Archive, when asked if he would tackle a burglar again, Ozzy responded at the press conference: "Is the Pope a Catholic?" Sharon also gave details about her ring, which was reportedly stolen from a bedside table. She said: "[Ozzy] always said I was a perfect 10 [and] that when he had the money he would buy me a 10-carat diamond ring and he did." ‌ Years later, it was reported that a ring had been recovered after their daughter Kelly Osbourne, now 40, spotted it on the BBC's Crimewatch in 2011. It came following an appeal on the TV show for owners of stolen items to come forward after South Yorkshire Police recovered some jewellery. It was suggested at the time that none of the other items said to have been stolen from the Osbournes were part of the recovered lot. Kelly however said Sharon was in tears over seeing her ring. She wrote on X: "Thank you crime watch my mum is over the moon that's her wedding ring she cried with joy because she can get it back! Thank you!" The experience has prompted attention again this week following the news of Ozzy's death. His wife Sharon and four of his children shared the news in a statement just last night, in which they revealed that he had died yesterday. His death has led comments made by Ozzy over the years resurfacing. There have also been articles about his life and career, alongside tributes, including from his former bandmates, making headlines following the news too.

BBC radio and TV star quits £145k job to do stand-up as he claims 'not fit for purpose' corporation is facing an 'existential crisis'

A radio and TV star who quit the BBC last month is set to make the switch to stand-up comedy as he claims the corporation is 'not fit for purpose'. Nihal Arthanayake, 54, has worked as a broadcaster for 23 years, presenting on Radio One and Asian Network. However he has now quit his £145,000 role on BBC Radio 5 Live after expressing concerns about the broadcaster's news coverage. He told The Times: 'I do feel that the BBC is in an existential crisis, especially BBC News.' He added: 'BBC News is ultimately at the heart of the BBC's trust, no one's looking at impartiality with Traitors or Strictly. Its trust derives from its ability to communicate truth and hold power to account, and it has been proven beyond reasonable doubt when it comes to the BBC's coverage of Israel and Gaza it has failed to do that.' Arthanayake has repeatedly called out the organisation for a lack of diversity. When he worked at BBC North in Manchester he said he did not see 'anyone who looked like me', saying it was as much about class as colour or faith. He added that he believed there was not a single Muslim in the senior editorial processes at BBC Five Live. He admitted he has not had a leaving party, adding that he would not want to have a drink with anyone in BBC management. The presenter is set to take a considerable pay cut as part of his career change, which he described as 'terrifying' but is optimistic about taking to the stage. Arthanayake said he has experience of hecklers through working on radio, but was also not concerned about 'dying on stage', as he believes he will only get better. He said he has seen or interviewed comedians who he did not think were 'very good' and believes he is funnier. Currently his only experience of stand-up is limited to making jokes on the radio or hosting gigs. At one event he mocked London Mayor Sadiq Khan saying 'There goes Sadiq Khan, the son of a bus driver — although you'd never know it because he never mentions it'. He said his comedy heroes included David Letterman, Dave Chappelle and Romesh Ranganathan. Ranganathan is not just a friend and fellow Sri-Lankan to Arthanayake, but says he admires his journey to the epicentre of mainstream media. Alongside his move to comedy, the presenter is also writing a book about integration and interviewing musicians on a podcast for a record label. Arthanayake's stand-up debut is set to be part of the Sri-Lankan Culture Collective Festival this weekend. After quitting the BBC last month, he accused the corporation of 'treating their staff like pets. The BBC presenter spoke candidly in a video on Instagram and said: 'So today I walked into the BBC building in Salford and I was struck yet again, not for the first time, just how few black and Asian people work in that building. 'And one thing that people have to understand is that when you walk into an environment where you just don't see anybody that looks like you, that has an effect. 'Since I called them out on it, well over a year ago, it seems like ain't a damn thing changed.' In the caption, Nihal revealed he would be leaving the BBC in September and elaborated on his concerns. The journalist penned: 'I remember calling out BBC North on the lack of diversity in the building I worked in. 'I remember speaking to some of the black and Asian people who worked there and I kept hearing how isolating it was for them (not all obviously). 'It just struck me again today. It also reminded why I'll be leaving in September. Have pondered whether to press 'share' on this, but as I am leaving anyway...' The journalist shared a message he received from someone else who has worked at the BBC in another post. It read: 'I'm not sure the BBC is a place for people of colour I feel we get treated like 'pets', that we should be so grateful, despite grafting for our positions, & dare we speak out...' With the message, Nihal penned: 'Not sure I can disagree with these sentiments from someone who DM'd me about their experience of working at the BBC.' In the caption he revealed other former or current BBC colleagues had reached out to him. Nihal wrote: 'Had so many dms from people of colour who have worked or are still working at the BBC. 'BBC North is not an inclusive environment for people of colour. I am not the only one who thinks that.' Back in 2023, Nihal told a journalism diversity conference an 'overwhelmingly white' working environment was affecting his mental health. 'It's really affecting me that I walk in and all I see is white people.' His colleagues' response when he told them this was to reply defensively that they were not being racist, he claimed as he said that was missing the point.
