Karnataka Chief Poll Officer Seeks Proof From Rahul Gandhi Over Double-Voting Claim, Says Provide Relevant Documents

Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) V. Anbukumar has issued a notice to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, seeking evidence for his claim that a woman named Shakun Rani voted twice during elections. The notice addressed to Rahul Gandhi said, "In your press conference, you have stated that the documents shown in your presentation are from the records of the Election Commission of India. You said: 'This is EC data'. You have also stated that as per the records given by the polling officer, Smt. Shakun Rani has voted twice. You have said; 'Es ID card per do baar vote laga hai, wo jo tick hai, polling booth ke officer ki hai". (Two votes are given in this Voter ID card. The tick is made by the polling officer)." The Election body stated that MS has voted only once during the election not twice. "On inquiry, Smt. Shakun Rani has stated that she has voted only once and not twice, as alleged by you," the CEO stated. "Therefore, you are kindly requested to provide the relevant documents based on which you have concluded that Smt. Shakun Rani or anyone else has voted twice, so that a detailed inquiry can be undertaken by this office," the CEO said. Earlier, while addressing a massive gathering during the 'Our Vote, Our Right, Our Fight' rally, Rahul Gandhi had demanded that the Election Commission provide the electronic voters' list for the past 10 years along with video recordings.

Police security beefed up at Thrissur MP Suresh Gopi's office amid protests

The police have set up an outpost and deployed security personnel at Union Minister and Thrissur MP Suresh Gopi's office in the city, following mounting criticism over two recent controversies — the arrest of Malayali nuns in Chhattisgarh and the alleged irregularities in the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency's voter list. The move comes in the wake of opposition protests. Both the Congress and Left Democratic Front (LDF) had alleged that the voter roll for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls was tampered with, adding names of people who were not permanent residents of the constituency. Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and the losing candidate in the election V.S. Sunilkumar echoed the charge, going further to question the conduct of the returning officer. The party had demanded a probe into what it alleged to be a significant electoral fraud in the constituency. District Congress Committee (DCC) president Joseph Tajet claimed that 11 people, including Suresh Gopi's brother, were added to booth number 116, but their names were missing in the most recent voter roll. 'This proves that they were not permanent residents of the constituency,' he alleged. 'Missing from constituency' Meanwhile, KSU Thrissur district president Gokul Guruvayur lodged a complaint with Thrissur East Police stating that Suresh Gopi has been missing from the constituency since the arrest of the nuns in Chhattisgarh. The complaint urged police to find out his whereabouts and who was behind his 'disappearance.'

Ahead of PM Modi's visit, NSUI leaders put under ‘house arrest' in Bengaluru

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bengaluru on Sunday, the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the youth wing of the Congress, alleged that senior leaders of their organisation were put under 'house arrest' by the city police. A police source said the cops detained NSUI leaders as they were planning to protest over the alleged electoral malpractices recently highlighted by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. 'They wanted to hold a protest when the prime minister was about to come for the inauguration of the Yellow Line of Namma Metro,' the source added. The Bengaluru police reportedly put Lakshya Raj V, president, NSUI Bengaluru central district, Keethi Ganesh, state president, NSUI, and other leaders under 'house arrest'. Basavaraju A P, General Secretary, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, and, In-charge, Karnataka state NSUI unit, said on X, 'Today, while the Prime Minister visits Bengaluru, our NSUI Karnataka office bearers have been unjustly detained and kept under house arrest simply on suspicion that we might protest against the misuse of the Election Commission.' The right to peaceful protest is guaranteed by our Constitution, and no government or police force has the authority to pre-emptively silence voices of dissent. Karnataka State Police & BENGALURU CITY POLICE @CPBlr, I urge you to immediately release our NSUI leaders and ensure that our democratic rights are protected.
