‘Hansel and Gretel' is reimagined by Stephen King and Maurice Sendak

An upcoming edition of 'Hansel and Gretel' combines the dark and singular talents of two literary giants who apparently never met: Stephen King and the late Maurice Sendak.
HarperCollins Publishers announced Thursday that the King–Sendak reimagining of the famed Brothers Grimm tale about two lost children in a frightening forest is scheduled for Sept. 2. King's words will be complemented by sketches Sendak drew up for set and costume designs for a 1997 production of the Humperdinck opera adaptation. The book was initiated by the Maurice Sendak Foundation.
King, author of 'The Shining,' 'Carrie,' and other horror classics, said he decided to agree to the project after seeing Sendak's illustrations. 'Two of his pictures in particular spoke to me: One was of the wicked witch on her broom with a bag of kidnapped children riding behind her; the other was of the infamous candy house becoming a terrible face. I thought, 'This is what the house really looks like – a devil sick with sin – and it only shows that face when the kids turn their backs.' I wanted to write that!' King said in a statement issued through HarperCollins. 'To me it was the essence of this story, and really all fairy tales: a sunny exterior, a dark and terrible center, brave and resourceful children. In a way, I have been writing about kids like Hansel and Gretel for much of my life.'
Representatives for King say he has no memory of meeting Sendak, although King has expressed admiration for the musical 'Really Rosie,' a Sendak–Carole King collaboration. Lynn Caponera, the Sendak Foundation's executive director, said in a statement that she thought King ideal because 'outside of the Grimms, he's the master of scary stories and a wonderful writer to boot.'
Sendak, who died in 2012, spoke about 'Hansel and Gretel' around the time he was working on the opera. In an interview published in the 2003 book 'The Art of Maurice Sendak,' he called the fairy tale the most profound of the Grimm canon. 'Generally speaking, most of Grimm is about heroic children. Hansel and Gretel are the most heroic of them all,' said Sendak, known for 'Where the Wild Things Are,' 'In the Night Kitchen,' and other children's favorites. 'It's the toughest story in the world, and people are afraid of it, yet it's famous because it's so truthful.'

Britain's Prince Harry meets war victims in unannounced visit to Ukraine

LONDON: Prince Harry met with war victims on Thursday in an unannounced visit to Ukraine as part of his ongoing work with wounded veterans, a spokesperson said. Harry visited the Superhumans Center, an orthopedic clinic in Lviv that treats and rehabilitates wounded military personnel and civilians, to see top-notch services provided in a country in the midst of war. The center provides prosthetics, reconstructive surgery and psychological help free of charge. The Duke of Sussex, who served 10 years in the British Army, has made helping injured soldiers one of his most prominent causes. He founded the Invictus Games in 2014 to offer wounded veterans the challenge of competing in sports events similar to the Paralympics. Harry was accompanied by a contingent from the Invictus Games Foundation, including four veterans who have been through similar rehabilitation experiences. The visit to the area in western Ukraine that has frequently been targeted with Russian missiles was not announced until after he was out of the country. He traveled to Ukraine after spending two days in a London court where he is appealing the British government's decision to strip him of his government-funded protection after he quit working as a member of the royal family in 2020 and moved his family to California. The prince is no stranger to war, having served two tours in Afghanistan, where he flew missions as an Apache helicopter copilot gunner. Harry, 40, the younger son of King Charles III, is the second member of the royal family to visit Ukraine. His aunt, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, became the first British royal to travel to the country since Russia's 2022 invasion when she made an unannounced visit to Kyiv last year. The royal family has been outspoken in their support for Ukraine. King Charles warmly greeted President Volodymyr Zelensky in a show of support at his estate on the North Sea coast just two days after his extraordinary dressing down by US President Donald Trump at the White House. Harry's older brother, Prince William, met with Ukrainian refugees during a two day visit to Estonia last month.

Billie Jean King Immortalized in Bronze with Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Billie Jean King became the first woman to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the new sports entertainment category on Monday and she was joined by friends Magic Johnson and Oscar-winning actor Jamie Lee Curtis. 'The important things is, I don't want to be the last one,' the Hall of Fame tennis player told the crowd. King received the 2,807th star, located near the famed intersection of Hollywood and Vine across from the historic Pantages Theater. Its electronic marque read, 'A star for a star. Congratulations Billie Jean King.' Fans gathered on the sidewalk outside a dumpling shop while horns honked and celebrity tour buses cruised past on busy Hollywood Boulevard. 'You always fight for what's right,' Johnson told King above the din. 'You lend your platform and your voice and your time and your money to bring about change.' Johnson, like King, is a part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who were honored at the White House earlier Monday for winning the 2024 World Series. 'We're just alike,' he said. 'We're super competitive as hell, we're control freaks because we know that if you put it in our hands we're going to win. You've been a winner your whole life, you love to help people and last but not least, you always will stand for what's right.' The ceremony reunited King with players Rosie Casals and Julie Anthony from the earliest days of the WTA Tour, as well as the tour's retired athletic trainer Connie Spooner. Also attending were five-time major champion Maria Sharapova and Stacey Allaster, former WTA CEO and current US Open tournament director. King grew up in Long Beach, 34 miles south of Hollywood. She played at the Los Angeles and Beverly Hills tennis clubs, where she'd spot stars like Lucille Ball and Doris Day. 'My family loved music and movies,' she said. 'A trip to Hollywood, a movie at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, was a special treat for our family. My mother would have loved this.' King attended Oscar-winning actor Holly Hunter's star ceremony in 2008. 'I remember thinking back then, 'Oh man, this is really cool. This is unbelievable,'' she said. ''Oh, I'm never going to get this.' Here I am.' King was the first to step on her bronze star after it was uncovered several blocks east of where her longtime friend Elton John's is located. 'Remember," she said, 'my star is your star.'
