'Dream come true' for McAteer as he scores his first senior goal in a palyer of the match performance
Kasey McAteer revealed that his first senior goal for the Republic of Ireland was like a 'dream come true'.
The 23-year-old put the Boys in Green ahead on Friday in the international friendly against Senegal at the Aviva Stadium 'I'm over the moon. You can tell by my celebrations - it was like a dream come through' beamed the Leicester City wide man.
'It was my first start at the Aviva. Hopefully, there's many more to come. It was good to get myself on the scoresheet. It was a shame that we couldn't hold on for the result to get the win. Senegal are a really good team. We'll take it in our stride.' The visitors came into the contest unbeaten in 20 fixtures. But the ending when both teams flared up didn't have the feeling of an end of season friendly.
'We went into the game saying it wasn't a friendly. For us, it was about having a good performance. And getting a result. Both teams wanted to win the game. That's the nature of it. We want to win every game we play. It was a good game. But we were unlucky we couldn't hold on in the end' stated McAteer.
The winger only found out that was in the first 11 of the Irish starting line-up late on Thursday evening.
'I only found out last night. I was buzzing when the gaffer (Heimir Hallgrímsson) told me. So I had to switch my mind to focus on the game, and give my all for the team. And the country. Hopefully, the fan saw me do that tonight.'
On his goal, and only the second score that the African side had conceded in their last 741 minutes of football in all competitions, McAteer said 'It was a great save by their keeper. I was surprised that he saved it. I thought 'oh no'. But luckily it ricocheted into my path, and I took a touch then just from point blank, it went in. So, I'm over the moon with that.' He added 'It was all about instinct. I'm not going to miss from there. If I miss from there, there's going to be a problem. I'm just over the moon to score my first goal.'
The Foxes player believes there is a bot of momentum around the Irish squad presently.
'We had two good results in the last camp. We've now had a good result tonight against a really good team in the end. They are ranked higher than us. Not many teams get results against them. We have to look after ourselves going into the next game (against Luxembourg on Tuesday) and try to get the win there.' With the World Cup qualifiers looming in September, McAteer put his name into the reckoning for the right side of attack position up for grabs.
'Listen, we've got some great players, the likes of Festy (Ebosele). He's really pushing, We can push each other together to get better. The main thing is to get to the World Cup. That's our aim. Every friendly game, we need to build and build. Hopefully, we can get ourselves there in the future.'

With 15 countries participating, favourable weather bar a shower or two made for a hectic atmosphere in the picturesque Green Glens Complex and Drishane Estate. Some of the best horses and riders in eventing circles descended on the North Cork location by ferry and truck with visitors drawn from the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Asia and across Europe. The picturesque setting against the backdrop of Clara Mountain and Drishane Castle was a perfect amphitheatre for cross country with dressage and show jumping hosted in the adjoining Green Glens Complex. 'We are overwhelmed and delighted that so many international riders are coming to Millstreet, it was the largest entry since the event commenced in 2015, the arrival of so many leading figures in the international eventing world is a major highlight in the Irish calendar and we have been working hard to ensure some great competitions and a fun weekend,' said Event Director Thomas Duggan. Upwards of 400 horses were in Millstreet, riders included double Olympic gold medalist from Tokyo and Paris Laura Collett, the Great Britain rider is a MBE recipient for her pursuits on the world stage. Collett was joined by compatriots Emily King, Izzy Taylor, Max Warburton, Jack Pinkney, Harry Horo and Gemma Stevens. Stevens figured prominently in a number of categories and savoured the Millstreet atmosphere. 'What a weekend in Millstreet, to enjoy success here is something quite special at a great venue. For me, it's also such a relief to win on the Irish bred Flash Cooley because I've been second in a CCI4*-L class four times', she said. Australian Kevin McNab, a silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics is a popular visitor to Millstreet, amongst his strong line up was Newmarket Amy, bred by the Scarteen Equine Farm in Newmarket and sold to Co. Meath based Rhiannon Burton with McNab becoming the regular pilot. En route to Millstreet, the pair enjoyed success at the Strzegom Show in Poland, a podium place also in Millstreet. Four time Olympian Austin O'Connor was back in familiar territory, the Mallow native and UK-based rider delivered one of his finest performances to date at the prestigious Badminton Horse Trials recently, finishing third overall aboard his long-time partner Colorado Blue. The Drishane Cross Country course saw new developments, the terrain bedded in well over recent months, new fences and a reshaped water development adding to the appeal against the backdrop of Clara Mountain with Event Director Thomas Duggan accepting the plaudits. 'We are thrilled that so many international competitors want to come here to educate their horses and enjoy the superb courses and footing here. 'It has been such a successful showcase for the Irish Sport Horse,' he said. Equestrian excitement returns to Millstreet next month for the Pony and Young Rider Show from July 3-6 with the Millstreet International CSI2* Horse Show scheduled from July 23-27.

Ireland complete hat-trick of La Baule Nations Cup wins
For the third time in history, the Irish show jumping team emerged as winners of the five-star Nations Cup of France in La Baule. In a team that included a mixture of youth and experience, they were pushed all the way by Belgium, but it was the Irish who came out on top at the French seaside venue after a flawless display. Ireland arrived in La Baule on the back of a Nations Cup win last weekend in British Columbia and knew they would face an event tougher test in La Baule where a world class field had assembled. Wexford's Bertram Allen got Ireland off to the perfect start when he jumped clear as the first rider to enter the arena with 9-year-old gelding Qonquest De Rigo. Seamus Hughes Kennedy and ESI Rocky (ISH) were next to go, fresh from an impressive fourth-place finish in the Rolex Grand Prix of Rome a week earlier. They delivered a textbook clear to keep Ireland on a zero score. Tom Wachman with Tabasco De Toxandria Z then picked up 8 faults, but that could be discarded when anchor rider Cian O'Connor jumped clear with the 14-year-old gelding Bentley De Sury. That left Ireland on a zero score at the half-way stage and in a tie for the lead with Belgium. The second round saw Allen again jump clear, while Nicola Philippaerts matched the score for Belgium to keep the two nations out in front. Hughes Kennedy then added another Irish clear, and when 20-year-old Wachman also jumped clear second time out, Ireland were guaranteed to finish on a zero score without the need for Cian O'Connor to jump in the second round. With Peter Devos having one fence down in his second round, Belgium's final rider, Gilles Thomas, had to jump clear to force a jump-off with Ireland. Thomas picked up four faults at the second fence in what was an otherwise perfect round meaning Ireland were clear winners as the only team to finish on a zero score. Belgium finished second on four faults, while Brazil took third place on the podium with 8 faults.
