Speaking to the BBC, Ms Barker expressed concerns over some comments which had been made online about the circumstances surrounding Mr O'Brien's fall.Social media posts had been "extremely distressing" for the entire family, she said."We wanted to minimise the countless untruths which are currently circulating around Ed's condition and also to urge people to consider what they are writing on social media for Ed's loved ones to see," Ms Barker said."We are going through one of the worst things a parent can go through and some of the unwarranted comments are further compounding our heartache as a family. "Ed is just a young man who made a mistake and he's paying for it dearly."
Earlier, on social media, Ms Barker had explained that her son had "climbed a tree, he'd had a few bottles, he was high on nothing but life - and he's been incredibly unlucky".She said her son had suffered "a freak accident that is likely to affect him, and all of us, whatever the outcome, for many years to come"."Any recovery at all from this incident is likely to be a slow and lengthy process and is unlikely to be without implications," she wrote.Ms Barker told the BBC the family was currently travelling to and from Leeds two to four times a day to spend as much time as possible with Mr O'Brien."We're holding onto every hope that our son and brother comes out of this as unscathed as possible, given his injuries," she said. "As yet, there is little improvement in his condition. He remains in a coma, but the fantastic team looking after him are confident he is showing some positive signs."

August 18 - New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs is "ahead of schedule" in his return from a torn ACL, executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf said Monday. Diggs began training camp last month with no restrictions after receiving medical clearance, but he has yet to appear in a preseason game. "Stefon has done everything we've asked," Wolf said. "He's been attentive in meetings. He's been good on the field. He had two really good practices in Minnesota. He's ahead of schedule, injury-wise." Diggs has been cleared for contact, but Wolf did not say whether the four-time Pro Bowl selection will be active for Thursday's preseason finale against the host New York Giants. Diggs told reporters last week "we'll see" when asked about his availability for the Sept. 7 season opener against the visiting Las Vegas Raiders. Diggs signed a three-year, $63.5 million contract with the Patriots in March. Playing for the Houston Texans last season, he caught 47 passes in eight games before sustaining the season-ending knee injury on Oct. 27 against the Indianapolis Colts. Diggs, 31, has 857 career catches for 10,491 yards and 70 touchdowns in 144 regular-season games (136 starts) with the Minnesota Vikings (2015-19), Buffalo Bills (2020-23) and Texans. Volunteer officer met alleged rape victim while posing as girl, 16, court told
A volunteer Metropolitan Police officer accused of raping a woman was posing online as a 16-year-old girl when the pair began talking, a court has heard. Amersham Law Courts heard that James Bubb, who now identifies as a woman named Gwyn Samuels, allegedly raped the woman he was in an on-off relationship with between January 2018 and February 2023. On Monday, the trial heard the pair met on the online chat site Omegle while Bubb was posing as a teenage girl and that they had spoken about a sexual practice known as BDSM (bondage, discipline/domination, sadism/submission, and masochism). Jurors previously heard the woman had told police Bubb went on to use 'BDSM and kink as a way of creating control' throughout their relationship. The complainant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told the court on Monday: 'When I met James on Omegle, I didn't know that it was James at first, they introduced themselves as a teenage girl so I was more concerned than anything else, and then kind of just talking to them about maybe this isn't what they should want to look at at their age.' She said: 'As I said, James first presented themselves as a 16-year-old girl.' Jurors previously heard the pair started talking when the complainant had 'just turned 18' and that she had been 'terrified' after Bubb had suggested 'knife-play' during their relationship. In her police interview, she said: 'When a guy is trailing a knife down you telling you the things he could do with it and you are terrified and you don't trust he would stop – the safe word means nothing.' During cross-examination, Adrian Amer, defending Bubb, asked: 'All the BDSM you had with James was completely consensual wasn't it?' 'No,' the alleged victim replied. Mr Amer continued: 'Did you introduce knife-play?' 'I did not introduce knife-play,' the woman said. Mr Amer asked: 'In your knife-play, sometimes you were blindfolded weren't you?' 'Yes,' the witness said. 'And James would use a blunt butter knife to run along your body, a blunt butter knife that's correct, isn't it?' Mr Amer asked. 'I have no way of knowing if it was a blunt butter knife, I was blindfolded,' the alleged victim said. Asked to describe the knife that Bubb would use during times where the alleged victim was not blindfolded, she said it was a 'large-ish knife' like the type 'used to cut vegetables'. Regarding the size of the knife, the woman indicated it was shorter than the length of an A4 piece of paper. The 27-year-old has denied one count of rape in relation to the complainant, and two counts of rape, two counts of sexual activity with a child, one count of assault of a child under 13 by penetration, one count of rape of a child under 13 and one count of assault by penetration in relation to another complainant. A not guilty verdict on one of the rape charges in relation to the second complainant was returned on Wednesday after the prosecution offered no evidence. All charges are alleged to have taken place between January 1 2018 and April 2 2024. The defendant, of High Street, Chesham, Buckinghamshire, denies all charges. The trial continues.

Dorset Police 'do not endorse' Bournemouth volunteer patrol group
A police and crime commissioner (PCC) has said a group of volunteers patrolling Bournemouth at night is not endorsed by the Force describes itself as a voluntary community service set up to keep streets safe and "protect the most vulnerable".But Dorset PCC David Sidwick told the BBC: "I have had no contact with them. I have concerns about vetting, I have concerns about training, I have concerns about their administration."The group said it remained "committed to collaboration" with police and was working to resolve the issues. The decision not to endorse the group follows a multi-agency meeting on Chief Constable Mark Callaghan, of Dorset Police, said: "We have engaged with the group extensively and a review of their vetting processes has highlighted areas of significant concern. "The organisers have been unable to provide reassurance that this group has sufficient safeguards in place to ensure volunteers are adequately vetted, trained, and equipped to undertake high-visibility patrols in the community."He said there were "insufficient details in relation to the use of body-worn cameras, publishing of photographs of members of the public, administration and recording of any force used or first aid provided, and limited evidence of any training provided".He added: "We welcome the responsible use of volunteers, who wish to carry out public service and there are many ways in which this can be facilitated in a safe way, including becoming a Special Constable, joining the street pastor programme, or via established Watch schemes." Safeguard Force claimed it was asked to attend the meeting "at very short notice, with no agenda provided".It said the concerns raised were "primarily related to wording in documentation" and it was taking "immediate action" to resolve them."We remain committed to collaboration and are fully prepared for our next meeting as requested," it force said it had been carrying out its own high-visibility patrols in Bournemouth, with 289 foot patrols taking place in the past seven days, including the town centre, gardens and seafront, leading to arrests, dispersal notices, stop searches and anti-social behaviour incidents tackled.
