Planning a business trip to New Zealand? Here's the visa you need

Economic Times16 hours ago
Agencies New Zealand offers a specific Business Visitor Visa for professionals and entrepreneurs who need to visit the country for short-term business purposes. This visa is designed to allow applicants to attend meetings, conferences, negotiations, or conduct limited business activities without requiring a full work visa. It is part of New Zealand's wider framework to facilitate trade, business cooperation, and professional exchange with overseas visitors.
Duration and cost of the visa
The Business Visitor Visa allows a stay of up to three months in a 12-month period. The visa costs NZ $341, and according to Immigration New Zealand, 80% of applications are processed within four days. The short processing time reflects the visa's focus on fast-tracking temporary business visits.
Who can apply
Applicants must be visiting New Zealand for business reasons only and must meet several key conditions:
Be in good health and of good character.
Have a genuine reason for travelling.
Show evidence of sufficient financial support during the stay. This can be self-funded, employer-funded, or backed by a government or an approved sponsor.
Provide proof that they intend to leave New Zealand at the end of their visit. Business travellers are also expected to provide a letter from their employer or the New Zealand company they are visiting. This letter should confirm employment status and the specific business purpose of the trip.
Financial requirements
To cover living expenses, visitors must show they can support themselves with at least NZ $1,000 per month, or NZ $400 per month if accommodation has been pre-paid. Acceptable proof includes: Bank or credit card statements
Prepaid hotel receipts or vouchers
Traveller's cheques or bank drafts If the applicant is sponsored, the sponsor must fill out a Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry and may also provide evidence such as recent bank statements, employment records, or proof of housing.
Health and character conditions
Applicants must be in good health. In most cases, those staying fewer than six months do not need medical tests, but Immigration New Zealand may ask for a chest X-ray or medical examination if required. For character requirements, police certificates may be necessary, particularly for applicants aged 17 or above who are planning to spend 24 months or longer in New Zealand over multiple stays. Police checks must be from both the applicant's country of citizenship and any country where they have lived for five years or more.
What the visa allows
The Business Visitor Visa grants more than just entry for business purposes:
Business activities: attend meetings, conferences, and negotiations, but not engage in long-term work.
Study: up to three months of study is permitted.
Family inclusion: partners and dependent children under 19 years old can be included in the same visa application, provided proof of relationship and identity is given. It's important to note that if business activities go beyond the scope of short visits, such as taking up employment or staying beyond three months, applicants will need to apply for a Specific Purpose or Event Work Visa instead.
Application process
Applicants can submit their application online or on paper. Online submission is generally faster and requires scanned copies of all documents. Steps include:
Gather documents: Passport, proof of identity, financial evidence, employer letter, medical and police certificates (if needed).
Submit application: Upload documents online or attach them to a paper form. Pay the fee.
Processing: Most applications are decided quickly, with authorities contacting applicants if more documents are needed. Decision: Approved applicants receive an eVisa, which outlines visa conditions.
Arrival and stay in New Zealand
Travellers must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) before arriving. At the border, authorities may check health, character, and onward travel documents. Proof of return travel or funds to purchase a ticket is mandatory unless a sponsor provides this assurance.Once in New Zealand, visa holders must adhere to conditions: They may only conduct business activities listed in their application.
They may leave and re-enter New Zealand only if their visa carries a multiple-entry condition. They cannot engage in paid employment within the country. Limited study of up to three months is permitted.
