Iraq Business7 days ago
By John Lee.
The National Investment Commission (NIC) has reportedly announced that applications for housing units in the Bismayah Residential Project will reopen only after the resumption of work by South Korea's Hanwha Engineering & Construction, the company contracted to complete an additional 70,000 housing units under a new phase of the project.
NIC spokesperson Hanan Jasem told the state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA) that three conditions must be met before applications can be accepted again:
A full review of the existing digital application platform. Exclusion of applicants under the legal age or over 60 years old. Ensuring no duplicate applications from individuals within the same family, in accordance with public bank lending rules.
Jasem confirmed that around 70,000 Iraqis had already applied via the "Ur" government platform. She added that the Bismayah complex has a total planned capacity of approximately 100,000 units, intended to house around 600,000 people.
According to the INA article, Hanwha has completed about 30,000 units to date, of which roughly 21,000 have been officially handed over to the Commission and distributed to eligible citizens.

Iraq to Increase Oil Output Amid Healthy Market Conditions

By John Lee. The eight OPEC+ countries, including Iraq, have agreed to the continuing of their phased rollback of 2.2 million bpd in voluntary cuts that began in April. According to a statement from OPEC, the decision, taken during a virtual meeting on 3rd August, reflects confidence in current oil market fundamentals, including low inventory levels and a stable global economic outlook. The countries reiterated that the adjustment aligns with the 5th December 2024 agreement, which allows for a gradual and flexible return of production, with the ability to pause or reverse adjustments depending on market conditions. The group also stressed the importance of compensating for any overproduction since January 2024 and confirmed their collective commitment to the Declaration of Cooperation, which is being monitored by the Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee (JMMC). Regular monthly reviews will continue, with the next meeting scheduled for 7th September 2025. Full statement from OPEC: Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, UAE, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Oman reaffirm commitment to market stability on current healthy oil market fundamentals and steady global economic outlook and adjust production The eight OPEC+ countries, which previously announced additional voluntary adjustments in April and November 2023, namely Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, UAE, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Oman met virtually on 3 August 2025, to review global market conditions and outlook. In view of a steady global economic outlook and current healthy market fundamentals, as reflected in the low oil inventories, and in accordance with the decision agreed upon on 5 December 2024 to start a gradual and flexible return of the 2.2 million barrels per day voluntary adjustments starting from 1 April 2025, the eight participating countries will implement a production adjustment of 547 thousand barrels per day in September 2025 from August 2025 required production level. This is equivalent to four monthly increments as detailed in the table below. The phase-out of the additional voluntary production adjustments may be paused or reversed subject to evolving market conditions. This flexibility will allow the group to continue to support oil market stability. The eight OPEC+ countries also noted that this measure will provide an opportunity for the participating countries to accelerate their compensation. The eight countries reiterated their collective commitment to achieve full conformity with the Declaration of Cooperation, including the additional voluntary production adjustments that were agreed to be monitored by the JMMC during its 53rd meeting held on April 3rd 2024. They also confirmed their intention to fully compensate for any overproduced volume since January 2024. The eight OPEC+ countries will hold monthly meetings to review market conditions, conformity, and compensation. The eight countries will meet on September 7, 2025. (Source: OPEC Secretariat)

TikTok removes 10 million Iraqi videos in Q1 on violations

Shafaq News – Baghdad TikTok removed more than 10 million videos in Iraq during the first quarter of 2025 for violating community guidelines, according to the platform's latest transparency report. The Q1 2025 report highlighted TikTok's efforts to 'foster a safer digital environment across several Arab countries.' In Iraq, the platform said 99.5% of violating content was removed proactively, while 95.5% was deleted within 24 hours of being posted. Regarding live content, TikTok reported banning over 346,000 hosts and shutting down around 650,000 live streams in Iraq during the same period due to similar violations. The report also noted that a total of 16.5 million videos were removed between January and March 2025 across Iraq, Egypt, Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates, and Morocco for breaching the platform's guidelines. Globally, TikTok shut down more than 19 million violating live streams during the first quarter of the year, a 50% increase from the previous quarter. Within the same period, the platform banned 849,976 live-stream hosts worldwide and preemptively removed more than 1.5 million live broadcasts across the five Arab countries mentioned. Earlier, Iraq's Minister of Communications, Hiyam Al-Yasiri, announced plans to ban TikTok in the country, where the app is used by over 34 million people. She cited widespread concerns from families about the platform's negative influence on societal values. Al-Yasiri stated that the app contributes to the "disintegration of the social fabric," while digital media experts have argued that TikTok remains a valuable tool for entrepreneurs, content creators, and a key source of income for thousands of young Iraqis in marketing and digital sales.

German-Chinese Consortium Expand Baiji Power Station

By John Lee. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has officially launched the first phase of the second Baiji Gas Power Station in Salahuddin province, a project that will add up to 1,014 megawatts to Iraq's power grid. Speaking at the launch event on Saturday, Al-Sudani reiterated that energy is the cornerstone of Iraq's comprehensive development plans. He confirmed that the government has allocated financial resources to support the full energy value chain - production, transmission, and distribution - across the country. The project will be executed by a consortium of Siemens Energy (Germany) and China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC). The contract covers the rehabilitation of six Siemens gas turbine units, each with a capacity of 169 MW. Key components include: A load evacuation network of seven lines at 400 kV, linking six transmission lines to the national grid. A new 132 kV transmission system comprising 16 lines to serve Salahuddin province. The first two units are expected to be operational within 27 months, with subsequent units coming online at two-month intervals. (Sources: PMO, Ministry of Electricity)
