Imam replaces Fakhar in Pakistan's CT squad
Pakistan's Champions Trophy 2025 campaign has suffered a significant setback as opener Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury.
In his place, Imam-ul-Haq has been drafted into the squad for the remainder of the matches.
Fakhar sustained the injury while fielding during Pakistan's match against New Zealand in Karachi.
Zaman suffered a muscular injury while chasing a ball towards the boundary. He cut it off before palming it over to Babar Azam to throw it back to the keeper, but immediately appeared to feel discomfort and walked off the field.
He walked backed to dug out with the physio, though unaided. He eventually returned to the field later in the game.
The southpaw came out to bat at Mohammad Rizwan's position, as he was not eligible to open for Pakistan for not spending required time on the field during New Zealand innings.
During his batting, he again felt discomfort and was checked by a physio. He was not able to run between the wicket properly.
Eventually, he was bowled by Bracewell after scoring 24 off 42 deliveries.
The left-handed batter took to his social media handles to announce his departure from the rest of the tournament.
"Representing Pakistan on the biggest stage is an honour and dream of every cricketer in this country," he wrote on Instagram.
"I have been privileged enough to represent Pakistan multiple times with pride. Unfortunately I'm now out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025 but surely Allah is the best planner. Grateful for the opportunity. I will be backing our boys in green from home. This is only just the beginning, the comeback will be stronger than the setback. Pakistan Zindabad."
The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 has approved Imam-ul-Haq as a replacement for Fakhar Zaman in Pakistan's squad.
A player's replacement requires approval from the Event Technical Committee before being officially added to the squad.
Imam was already part of the Pakistan Shaheens squad and recently impressed in a warm-up match against South Africa, scoring 98 runs.
Meanwhile, in the tournament opener, defending champions Pakistan suffered a 60-run defeat against New Zealand.
Pakistan will now face arch-rivals India in their next fixture, a must-win encounter to keep their title defense hopes alive.

Test skipper Shan Masood was also tipped to be sacked after Pakistan lost nine out of 12 Tests under his captaincy since December 2023. Masood's worst phase was a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Bangladesh, Pakistan's first loss against the lowly ranked team. Pakistan also drew a relatively easier series against the West Indies 1-1 last year. That defeat left Pakistan on the ninth and last position of the World Test Championship's third cycle. They finished fifth and seventh in the first two WTC cycles. "Masood's captaincy was unimpressive and timid, so he was destined to lose captaincy. Moreover, Masood's own performance was poor so Salman will also take over from him," the sources said. Pakistan's next tour is of Bangladesh for a three-match T20I series with matches on July 20, 22 and 24. Pakistan then play five T20Is against the West Indies in USA and the Caribbean. As for the Tests, Pakistan hosts South Africa for a two-match Test series in October. In the WTC fourth cycle (2025-2027) Pakistan will also host Sri Lanka and New Zealand while their away series are in Bangladesh, the West Indies and England.

Competing against 25 countries, the underdog Pakistani squad stunned traditional powerhouses such as India, Iran, Thailand, South Korea, and Japan, proudly raising the national flag and making the national anthem echo across the international arena. Despite being a small contingent, the Pakistani rowers delivered an outstanding performance that defied expectations. Mentors refuse to quit after tourney scrapped
Mentors appointed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for last year's Champions Cup are refusing to step down despite their roles being declared redundant. While Shoaib Malik has resigned voluntarily, the remaining four — Misbah-ul-Haq, Saqlain Mushtaq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Waqar Younis — are holding out, potentially forcing the PCB to pay Rs 20 million in compensation. Details have emerged that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had appointed five mentors for the Champions Cup in August last year. These included Misbah-ul-Haq, Saqlain Mushtaq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shoaib Malik, and Waqar Younis. From the beginning, their hefty monthly salary of Rs 5 million each had been a topic of debate. Recently, the PCB decided to scrap the Champions Cup due to unsatisfactory results and replace it with the Pentangular Cup. Logically, this also meant the mentors were no longer needed. Sensing the inevitable, Shoaib Malik resigned voluntarily, but the remaining four have maintained silence. Sources say some of them are deliberately waiting to be officially dismissed so they can claim compensationfour months' salary amounting to Rs 20 million as per their contracts. A few days ago, the PCB unofficially conveyed through informal channels that their services were no longer required, expecting they might resign on their own. That emotional pitch helped them secure record-breaking salaries. Ironically, many of them continued with their other engagements despite being appointed by the board. After only a few months of paying hefty salaries, the authorities realized the initiative wasn't yielding the expected benefits. Reportedly, some mentors have even warned the PCB that if removed, they would launch criticism campaigns on media.
